Recent developments in honey characterization

Honey is a very complex matrix to be investigated. Several chemical classes of compounds are present in a very large range of concentrations. A large number of research groups worldwide have focused their attention and studies to improve the knowledge of honey characterization; it appears clear that new developments of technological improvements would help to provide insight on this complex problem. In the meantime, it is also clear that the officially recognized methodologies are no longer sufficient to answer to the more demanding questions concerning honey authenticity. Complicated and time demanding sample preparation, and the requirement for people specialized in pollen analysis have significantly slowed down analysis response, becoming nowadays unaffordable. The emerging new techniques are opening new frontiers in honey characterization and the most promising approach seems to be the multidisciplinary one, focused on the detection of multiple components, with the aid of chemometrics. In the present review recent findings in honey characterization using advanced analytical techniques such as NMR and Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS) also coupled with chromatographic techniques, and other methods are presented covering the period between 2010 and 2015.

Determination of fixed carbon in graphite ore by potassium dichromate oxidation-nonaqueous titration

After the organic carbon and carbonate were eliminated by low temperature combustion (which was lower than 500?) and addition of phosphoric acid to no bubble, the sample was placed and heated at low temperature in airtight experimental equipment system which was prefilled with oxygen. While, the fixed carbon (graphite carbon) in the sample was oxidized with potassium dichromate to generate carbon dioxide gas in a short time with sulfuric acid as reaction medium and silver sulfate as catalyst. After removal of hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen sulfide and moisture, the released gas was absorbed by the absorbent composed of potassium hydroxide, ethanol and ethanolamine (which was pre-adjusted to blue by ethanol-ethanolamine titration solution) and titrated by ethanol-ethanolamine titration solution with thymolphthalein as indicator. As for the titration end point, the blue color of absorbent should be kept for 1 min. On the basis of this, a determination method of fixed carbon with mass fraction less than 30% in graphite ore by nonaqueous titration was established. The proposed method was applied to the determination of fixed carbon in certified reference materials of graphite ore. The results were basically consistent with the certified values. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n=10) were between 1.1% and 3.1%. The fixed carbon in graphite ore actual sample was determined according to the experimental method, and the results were basically consistent with those obtained by gravimetric method and high temperature ignition-nonaqueous titration method. The recoveries of method were between 98% and 103%.

Analytical pyrolysis for determining the molecular composition of contemporary monosulfidic black ooze

On-line flash pyrolysis, micro-scale sealed vessel (MSSV) pyrolysis and catalytic hydropyrolysis (HyPy) were used to characterise the insoluble, macromolecular organic component of monosulfidic black oozes (MBO) which have accumulated within the contemporary eutrophic environment of the Peel-Harvey estuary system (Geographe Bay, Western Australia). Pyrolysates were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the relative characterisation potential of the three pyrolysis techniques were evaluated with a particular interest in their sensitivity to organic sulfur compounds (OSCs). A similarity of results obtained from three different parts of the ?1 m cores sampled suggests a largely homogenous organic composition throughout the unit. The different pyrolysis techniques did, however, show several notable product differences, particularly the gaseous products detected by the on-line methods of flash- and MSSV-pyrolysis. The very high (i.e., ballistic) heating rate of flash-Py produced very high proportions of gaseous products (e.g., CO 2, H2S and SO2). A strong terrestrially sourced product component was reflected in all three pyrolysates profiles: flash-Py showed relatively high concentrations of lignocellulose products, while MSSV-Py and HyPy produced an abundance of plant wax (>n-C20) n-alkanes. Additionally, quantitatively significant levels (7-14% of total GC product signal) of several higher plant derived terpenoids (e.g., cadalene, p-cymene and calamanene) were identified by MSSV-Py. MSSV-Py also produced far greater overall concentrations of GC-amenable products than flash-Py, including a 14-fold increase of OSCs, which comprised nearly 10% of the total sulfur signal (i.e., organic plus ‘inorganic’ sulfur; cf. 4% of flash pyrolysis). Genetic and metabolic analysis of the carbofuran catabolic pathway in Novosphingobium sp. KN65.2

The widespread agricultural application of carbofuran and concomitant contamination of surface and ground waters has raised health concerns due to the reported toxic effects of this insecticide and its degradation products. Most bacteria that degrade carbofuran only perform partial degradation involving carbamate hydrolysis without breakdown of the resulting phenolic metabolite. The capacity to mineralize carbofuran beyond the benzofuran ring has been reported for some bacterial strains, especially sphingomonads, and some common metabolites, including carbofuran phenol, were identified. In the current study, the catabolism of carbofuran by Novosphingobium sp. KN65.2 (LMG 28221), a strain isolated from a carbofuran-exposed Vietnamese soil and utilizing the compound as a sole carbon and nitrogen source, was studied. Several KN65.2 plasposon mutants with diminished or abolished capacity to degrade and mineralize carbofuran were generated and characterized. Metabolic profiling of representative mutants revealed new metabolic intermediates, in addition to the initial hydrolysis product carbofuran phenol. The promiscuous carbofuran-hydrolyzing enzyme Mcd, which is present in several bacteria lacking carbofuran ring mineralization capacity, is not encoded by the Novosphingobium sp. KN65.2 genome. An alternative hydrolase gene required for this step was not identified, but the constitutively expressed genes of the unique cfd operon, including the oxygenase genes cfdC and cfdE, could be linked to further degradation of the phenolic metabolite. A third involved oxygenase gene, cfdI, and the transporter gene cftA, encoding a TonB-dependent outer membrane receptor with potential regulatory function, are located outside the cfd cluster. This study has revealed the first dedicated carbofuran catabolic genes and provides insight in the early steps of benzofuran ring degradation.

The novel thermochromic and energy-storage microcapsules with significant extension of color change range to different tones

In order to solve the problem of narrow color change range for common thermochromic material, the novel thermochromic and energy-storage microcapsules (TCEMs) was designed and synthesized by in-situ polymerization. The TCEMs contained optimizational thermochromic components and phase change materials, and exhibited the dual functional performances of thermochromic and energy-storage. Then, the TCEMs were applied to polyester/cotton blend fabric with waterborne polyurethane by coating process. The growing process, exterior morphology, color change effect, temperature-regulable behavior and thermal activity of the TCEMs and the treated fabrics were investigated. The results demonstrated that both TCEMs and modified fabrics had good energy-storage effect and remarkable thermochromic property. Especially, while surrounding temperature changed from 15 C to 45 C, the colors of TCEMs and treated fabrics could change from cool-tone (blue) to warm-tone (red), which significantly improved the color change range of the thermochromic material and made the color vary between different tones instead of changing in the region of similar color. The TCEMs exhibited great potentiality in the applying fields of decoration, anti-counterfeiting, architecture and intelligent textile, etc.
