Development of coumarin?benzofuran hybrids as versatile multitargeted compounds for the treatment of Alzheimer?s Disease

Alzheimer?s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive deterioration of memory and cognition. The evidenced multifactorial nature of AD has been considered the main reason for the absence of cure so far. Therefore, the development of novel hybrids to treat the disease is very much essential. Focusing on this, a novel series of coumarin?benzofuran hybrids have been designed and screened as anti-Alzheimer?s disease agents. The strategy is to obtain an effective mimetic of donepezil, which is acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Herein, the two main scaffolds namely coumarin and benzofuran are known pharmacophore moieties and we have performed their molecular design, pharmacokinetic descriptor studies for drug-likeliness. Further, in vitro studies such as antioxidant capacity, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition and amyloid-beta (Abeta) self-aggregation inhibition have also been performed. Most importantly, these studies revealed that the newly synthesized hybrids can be versatile and promising drug-like moieties as efficient anti-AD agents.

Effect of edta on quartz and hematite flotation with starch/amine in an aqueous solution containing mn2+ ions

In this paper, a detailed study of the influence of Mn2+ ions on quartz and hematite flotation (at pH 10.5 with starch/amine as depressor/collector) in the absence and presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is presented. By using zeta potential measurement and a careful analysis of manganese species present in water for dosages in which manganese hydroxide precipitated, we confirmed that the depression of both minerals by Mn2+ ions is due to the following: (i) the adsorption of Mn hydroxy complexes (Mn2 (OH)3+ and Mn(OH)+); (ii) Mn2+ and mainly (iii) the precipitation of Mn(OH)2 on mineral surfaces. These effects hindered the adsorption of amine species on the surfaces of the minerals (quartz and hematite). EDTA was used to complex Mn2+ to restore the recoveries of both minerals. This was confirmed by the species distribution diagrams of Mn and EDTA?Mn in water. Conditioning with starch followed by amine at pH 10.5 enabled a selective separation of these minerals.

The thermal stability of end-caped and linear sulfonated polyimides (SPIs), sulfonated polystyrene (SPS), and a sulfonated perfluorinated hydrocarbon, Nafion 117, and the corresponding triethylammonium sulfonate salts was investigated by dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Gas chromatographic-mass spectrographic analysis (GC/MS) of the sulfonated polymers and the salts to determine the volatiles released from acid and salt groups over a temperature range 200-275C was also investigated. GC/MS analysis reveals that water and sulfur dioxide volatiles are released from the sulfonic acids and water, sulfur dioxide and triethyl amine are released from the sulfonate salts. Dynamic and isothermal TGA studies based on weight loss revealed that the SPIs exhibited superior thermal stability than SPS and Nafion 117 sulfonic acids. However, dynamic TGA curves to determine the onset decomposition temperature of the sulfonic acid group reveal that Nafion 117 and SPS sulfonic acids exhibited greater thermal stabilities than the SPIs. The mechanisms of sulfonic acid and triethylammonium sulfonate salt decompositions based on GC/MS, 13C-NMR, and dynamic TGA curves are proposed.

The selective functionalization of one C?H bond over others in nearly identical steric and electronic environments can facilitate the construction of complex molecules. We report site-selective functionalizations of C?H bonds, differentiated solely by remote substituents, catalyzed by artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs) that are generated from the combination of an evolvable P450 scaffold and an iridium-porphyrin cofactor. The generated systems catalyze the insertion of carbenes into the C?H bonds of a range of phthalan derivatives containing substituents that render the two methylene positions in each phthalan inequivalent. These reactions occur with site-selectivity ratios of up to 17.8:1 and, in most cases, with pairs of enzyme mutants that preferentially form each of the two constitutional isomers. This study demonstrates the potential of abiotic reactions catalyzed by metalloenzymes to functionalize C?H bonds with site selectivity that is difficult to achieve with small-molecule catalysts.

High-performance polymers, e.g., poly(arylene ether)s and aromatic polyimides containing -CF3 substituents have been shown to possess a combination of excellent thermal, mechanical, solubility, processability, optical and electrical properties, rendering them suitable for a wide range of applications, e.g., as low-dielectric materials, in optical devices, as well as membranes for gas and solvent separation, and fuel cells. Moreover, the presence of -CF 3 substitution in aromatic groups enables facile synthesis of poly(arylene ether)s by activating the leaving group towards nucleophilic displacement reaction during polymerization. Most of these polymers have been synthesized by solution polycondensation of the corresponding -CF 3-substituted monomer. Considerable research has been focused towards the synthesis of new -CF3 substituted monomers and their polymerization, followed by property evaluations of the resulting polymers that has eventually enabled an undertstanding of the structure-property correlation in these polymers. This review provides a comprehensive presentation of -CF 3-substituted aromatic polyimides and poly(arylene ether)s developed in the last decade. Work on -CF3-subtituted poly(aryl ether ketone)s and poly(aryl ether sulfone)s, especially with respect to proton-exchage membranes for fuel-cell applications have also been included. The main focus has been devoted to the synthesis of the polymers from the corresponding -CF 3 substituted monomers, and the consequent property advantages brought about in the polymer.
