A metal-free heterogeneous photocatalytic system has been developed for highly efficient benzylic C-H oxygenations using oxygen as an oxidant. Several methods for the preparation of (Z) trimethoxystyrene derivatives 1 were investigated. After finding that the Wittig reaction led to unsatisfactory results, three different strategies were considered: a Suzuki coupling with a stereodefined monobromoalkene, a combination of hydrosilylation/vinylsilane hydrolysis and a palladium-catalyzed semi-hydrogenation step, using DMF/KOH as the hydrogen source. Our studies led us to prepare a series of diarylacetylene derivatives via a Sonogashira coupling reaction, and also to find out a copper-free basic cyclization leading to benzo[b]thiophenes. The final choice for the synthesis method of 1 strongly depends on the target compound but the semi-hydrogenation, which avoids the use of a toxic tin reducing agent, should be generally preferred.

Ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation is a leading cause of skin disease. Quantitative, continuous knowledge of exposure levels can enhance awareness and lead to improved health outcomes. Devices that offer this type of measurement capability in formats that can seamlessly integrate with the skin are therefore of interest. This paper introduces materials, device designs, and data acquisition methods for a skin-like, or ?epidermal,? system that combines colorimetric and electronic function for precise dosimetry in the UV-A and UV-B regions of the spectrum, and for determination of instantaneous UV exposure levels and skin temperature. The colorimetric chemistry uses (4-phenoxyphenyl)diphenylsulfonium triflate (PPDPS-TF) with crystal violet lactone (CVL) and Congo red for UV-A and UV-B operation, respectively, when integrated with suitable optical filters. Coatings of poly(ethylene-vinylacetate) (PEVA) protect the functional materials from sunscreen and other contamination. Quantitative information follows from automated L*a*b* color space analysis of digital images of the devices to provide accurate measurements when calibrated against standard nonwearable sensors. Techniques of screen printing and lamination allow aesthetic designs and integration with epidermal near field communication platforms, respectively. The result is a set of attractive technologies for managing UV exposure at a personal level and on targeted regions of the body.

Diagenetic transformation of organic matter in the Holocene sediments of the Black Sea: pyrolysis data

The article presents the results of pyrolysis (Rock-Eval) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of organic matter (OM) in the Holocene sediments of the Black Sea. The studied samples represent two parts of the sedimentary column: coccolith ooze with 2.8% Corg at the top and sapropels oozes with 8.5% Corg at the bottom. The deposition of Holocene sediments was inferred to take place under euxinic conditions, which are more favorable for organic-matter preservation and sapropel deposition during the Old Black Sea stage. The results show that the modern processes of microbially mediated methane oxidation in the Old Black Sea oozes are interpreted as the main cause of their apparently lower degree of diagenetic transformation as compared to that of coccolith oozes.

Accordingly, to address the ?missing links? in the developing series of chalcogen-based substrate reactivity, we report mild syntheses of metastable difluoro(aryl)(perfluoroalkyl)-lambda4-sulfanes and selanes. As only limited examples of these species exist in the current literature (accessible only by using F2 or XeF2/HF), we have carried out detailed structural analyses, primarily using NMR and SC-XRD data. In addition, we investigate the effect of the perfluoroalkyl chain on the outcome of oxidative fluorination, and, finally, we provide preliminary evidence that difluoro(aryl)(trifluoro-methyl)-lambda4-sulfanes may act as fluorinating reagents.

Synthesis of CaO?SiO2 compounds and their testing as heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification of sunflower oil

The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV?vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO¡¤SiO2 and 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 700 C, and 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 900 C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2?2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 700 C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.
