Silicon (Si) based implantable components are widely used to restore functionalities in the human body. However, there have been reported instances of Si corroding after only a few years of implantation. A key parameter often overlooked when assessing Si stability in-vitro, is the added constricting geometries introduced through in-vivo implantation. The influence of crevices and confined solutions on the stability of Si is presented in this study, considering two simulated physiological solutions: 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and HyClone Wear Test Fluid (WTF). It was found that Si is highly vulnerable to corrosion in confined/crevice conditions. High pitting corrosion susceptibility is found in a crevice, whereas a dissolution rate of ca. 3.6 nm/h at body temperature occurred due to local alkalization within a confined cathodic area. The corrosion rates could be increased by elevating the temperature and yielded linear Arrhenius relations, with activation energies of 106 KJ/mol in 0.01 M PBS and 109 KJ/mol in HyClone WTF, corresponding to a phosphorous-silicon interaction mechanism. Phosphorous species favored corrosion and contributed to enhanced Si dissolution, while chlorides were not so influential, and applied anodic potential induced pseudo-passivation. These results highlight the importance geometrical configurations can have on a material’s surface stability.

A newly isolated culture, Pseudomonas guariconesis, is reported for the first time for lipase production. Various process parameters affecting enzyme production were optimized through statistical design experiments. The Plackett?Burman experimental design was used for screening 10 parameters for lipase production, which was further optimized using the central composite design of response surface methodology. Maximum lipase activity of 220 U/ml was obtained after 24 h of incubation in shake-flask cultures with an inoculum concentration of 0.6% v/v, incubation temperature of 30C, and medium pH 9.0. Castor oil (0.5% v/v) was used as the inducer for lipase production. The enzyme was found to be compatible with five different commercial detergents, indicating its potential to be used in detergent formulations. It also acted as a biocatalyst in a transesterification process. The alkaline enzyme was found to be stable in the presence of bleaching agents, metal ions, and organic solvents as well.

To optimize the anaerobic digestion of grape pomace under mesophilic conditions, continuous digesters were operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) (30, 20, 15 and 10 days) equivalent to organic loading rates (OLR) of 2.5, 3.7, 5.7 and 7.3 kg COD m?3 d?1, respectively. At HRTs of 30 and 20 days, steady state conditions were observed with methane yields of 0.984 ± 0.013 NL d?1 and 1.362 ± 0.018 NL d?1, respectively. The HRT of 15 days was found critical because of acids accumulation through the experiments. When the OLR of 5.7 kg COD m?3 d?1 was reached, methane production was found to be instable. Finally, at HRT of 10 days, a failure of the system was observed due to the washing of the methanogenic microorganisms. Regarding the degradability of the lignocellulosic fractions, the maximum reduction yields for hemicellulose and cellulose were noted for HRTs of 30 and 20 days, while lignin was not degraded throughout the different experiments. For an optimization of the process, HRT of 20 days can therefore be recommended for productive use in large-scale applications.

One of the options under development for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is referred to as the Abo Akademi (AA) route, which is a two-stage route using serpentinite rock and ammonium sulphate to produce magnesium hydroxide that is subsequently carbonated in a gas-solid reactor. An issue for the process is to find a suitable way to precipitate and separate magnesium hydroxide and iron oxides from the obtained aqueous solution. Research presented in this paper will give some results from the separation of precipitated magnesium and iron oxides and hydroxides, as well as magnesium (hydro)carbonates (which are produced in the case where CO2 is fed to the solution at the same time). Experiments were done with analytical grade magnesium and iron sulphates as well as with serpentinite rock-derived magnesium and iron sulphate solutions. Inclined settlers were used and solutions were pumped into the settlers at different flow rates. Precipitation of the species was done either in a mixer before the solution was pumped to the settler or in the inclined settler itself. Most experiments were run at ambient temperature. Recirculation was used in some experiments in order to try to increase the precipitation and sedimentation efficiency. It was shown possible to achieve continuous separation of the solids from the suspensions. Increased temperature did not seem to affect settling of the magnesium hydroxide particles. Separation in inclined settlers would dictate very low pumping rates to avoid a too turbulent environment in the settling zone. Sedimentation was enhanced by applying wet (aqueous) carbonation thus achieving a magnesium (hydro)carbonate product with larger particle size than the suggested magnesium hydroxide separated according to the conventional AA route. Effort needs still to be put to optimizing the separation step in order to create a continuous flow combined with preceding process steps.

Liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexane, by molecular oxygen, has been carried out using cobalt molybdenum oxide (CoMoO4) catalyst supported on mesoporous silica supports (SBA-15, KIT-6 and FDU-12). For each support, the catalyst activity has been studied as a function of loading, pore size, and calcination temperature. The catalysts were characterized using surface area analysis (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Among the three supported catalysts, the one on FDU-12 shows the highest activity. The catalysts with lower loading, lower calcination temperature and lower pore size of support show higher activity but with lower selectivity. All the studied catalysts gave about 7-8% conversion, with selectivity of 85% for cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol (KA oil), before deactivation took over. The deactivated catalysts could be fully regenerated by re-calcination in every case. With such regeneration between runs, the catalysts are shown to retain their activity and selectivity over multiple cycles. The kinetic model which was proposed for the unsupported catalyst has been shown to work well for the supported catalysts as well.

Biohydrogen production potential (BHP) depends on several factors like inoculum source, substrate, pH, among many others. Batch assays are the most common strategy to evaluate such parameters, where the comparison is a challenging task due to the different procedures used. The present method introduces the first internationally validated protocol, evaluated by 8 independent laboratories from 5 different countries, to assess the biohydrogen potential. As quality criteria, a coefficient of variation of the cumulative hydrogen production (Hmax) was defined to be <15 %. Two options to run BHP batch tests were proposed; a manual protocol with periodic measurements of biogas production, needing conventional laboratory materials and analytical equipment for biogas characterization; and an automatic protocol, which is run in a device developed for online measurements of low biogas production. The detailed procedures for both protocol options are presented, as well as data validating them. The validation showed acceptable repeatability and reproducibility, measured as intra- and inter-laboratory coefficient of variation, which can be reduced up to 9 %. Biomaterials may be useful in filling lost bone portions in order to restore balance and improve bone regeneration. The objective of this study was to produce polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes combined with two types of bioglass (Sol?Gel and melt-quenched) and determine their physical and biological properties. Membranes were produced through electrospinning. This study presented three experimental groups: pure PCL membranes, PCL-Melt-Bioglass and PCL-Sol-gel-Bioglass. Membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry (FTIR), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy and Zeta Potential. The following in vitro tests were performed: MTT assay, alkaline phosphatase activity, total protein content and mineralization nodules. Twenty-four male rats were used to observe biological performance through radiographic, fracture energy, histological and histomorphometric analyses. The physical and chemical analysis results showed success in manufacturing bioactive membranes which significantly enhanced cell viability and osteoblast differentiation. The new formed bone from the in vivo experiment was similar to that observed in the control group. In conclusion, the electrospinning enabled preparing PCL membranes with bioglass incorporated into the structure and onto the surface of PCL fibers. The microstructure of the PCL membranes was influenced by the bioglass production method. Both bioglasses seem to be promising biomaterials to improve bone tissue regeneration when incorporated into PCL. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

The present work aimed to evaluate capability of a new molecular structure to stabilize polyethylene against thermal oxidation. Hence, effects of 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-propane-2-ylphenyl)-2-benzofuran-1-one (thymolphthalein) on the thermo-oxidative stability of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in both solid and melt states were investigated and compared with those of SONGNOX 1010, a commercially used phenolic antioxidant for the polymer. Oven aging experiments at 90 C followed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed that thymolphthalein at concentrations of 0.1-1.0 wt% improves thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer strongly in the solid state so that its stabilization efficiency is comparable to that of SONGNOX 1010. Furthermore, measurements of Oxidation Onset Temperature (OOT) and Oxidative Induction Time (OIT) of the polymer samples revealed that thymolphthalein modifies thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer in the melt state remarkably. So that, an increase in OOT value of the polymer as large as 36 ?C was obtained by addition of 0.1 wt% of thymolphthalein. It was also confirmed that thymolphthalein does not interfere with the stabilization action of the phenolic antioxidant in the polymer neither in the melt or in the solid state. Finally, a mechanism for the stabilization action of thymolphthalein in the polymer was proposed.

The use of electrochemical hydrogen removal (EHR) together with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) was demonstrated for the first time using a continuous hydrogen producing fermenter. CDR alone was found to increase hydrogen yields from 0.07 mol H2 molhexose to 0.72 mol H2 molhexose. When CDR was combined with EHR, hydrogen yields increased further to 1.79 mol H2 molhexose. The pattern of carbohydrate utilisation and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production are consistent with the hypothesis that increased yields are the result of relieving end product inhibition and inhibition of microbial hydrogen consumption. In situ removal of hydrogen and carbon dioxide as demonstrated here not only increase hydrogen yield but also produces a relatively pure product gas and unlike other approaches can be used to enhance conventional, mesophilic, CSTR type fermentation of low grade/high solids biomass.

Monocationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr), cetyldimethyl(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium bromide (CHDABr), and dicationic (gemini) surfactants, alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dimethyltetradecylammonium bromides) (14-s-14, where s = 2, 4, 6) were studied in the solubilization of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) anthracene, naphthalene, and organic dye alizarin. By means of UV?vis was found that gemini 14-s-14 surfactants demonstrate 2?4 times higher solubilisation capacity compared to the monomer surfactants. Solubilization of anthracene increases in the series 14-2-14: 14-4-14: 14-6-14 whereas naphthalene does not demonstrate remarkable sensitivity to the spacer length. Solubilization profile of Alizarin undergoes a break point causing lower solubilisation capacity at high surfactant concentration. The aggregates size was shown using DLS method to be dependent on solubilizate structure and nature and concentration of surfactant.
