Thermochromic films with intriguing functionalities have great potential in soft actuators, heat storage devices, and interactive interface sensors. Inspired by the unique features of bird feathers (such as Nicobar pigeon, Anna hummingbird, mandarin duck, etc.), a superhydrophobic thermochromic film (STF) with robust healability is proposed for the first time through sandwiching an electric heater between a top thermochromic layer and a bottom poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) substrate. The STF exhibits fast and reversible color conversions of blue-pink-yellow under a low input power and has a superhydrophobic property with a contact angle of 155. Furthermore, owing to the strong dynamic dipole-dipole interactions between the polar CF3 groups of flexible PVDF-HFP chains, the STF possesses a robust healing capability of structure and conductivity. By means of the temperature difference generated by the objects contacting (finger, iron, and water) as a stimulus, the STFs achieve tactile imaging and writing record with advantages of transient display, automatic erasure, and excellent reusability. Additionally, the STF-based anti-counterfeiting security labels with superhydrophobicity and three-state color switching simultaneously realize facile distinguishment and difficult forgery. The findings conceivably stand out as a new methodology to fabricate functional thermochromic materials for innovative applications.

In this article, a crucial compound, crystal violet lactone (CVL), was prepared by the reaction of N,N-dimethylaniline, p-dimethylanimobenzaldehyde and m-dimethylanimobenzoic acid. Taking alcohols or carboxylic acids as solvents, 15 novel reversible thermochromic complexes were prepared by means of chelation reaction between electron donor CVL and electron acceptor such as various phenols, aromatic amines, carboxylic acids, and Lewis acids, respectively. The structure of CVL is characterized by 1H NMR and MS. The reversible thermochromic behavior of these compounds are studied by DSC/TG, IR, and Raman spectrum. Results indicate that mechanism of these reversible thermochromic complexes is the lactone ring tautomerism when the temperature is low or high. Thermochromic color degree of these complexes is dependent on the acidity of electron acceptor and thermochromic temperature is dependent on the properties of solvent compounds. The properties of electron acceptor and solvent compounds also determined the thermochromic process of the complexes, which followed the first-order kinetic equation, and the values of energy of activity (E a) of thermochromic process are correlated with the components of the complexes nearly. The stronger the acidity of phenols is, and the deeper the thermochromic color degree is, the higher the value of Ea is, when electron acceptors are phenols.

Pancreatic lipase inhibitory effect of some edible spices in light of percent inhibition, efficacy, reversibility/irreversibility and effect of pH on inhibition is presented here. Lipase inhibitory activities of methanolic extracts of eighteen spices were evaluated. Extracts of Zanthoxylum armatum, Cinnamomum tamala, Syzygium aromaticum and Myristica fragrans were considered to be of high potency in synthetic substrate assay. Only Syzygium aromaticum showed high potency in natural substrate based lipase assay. Zanthoxylum armatum extract displayed lowest IC50 of 9.0 mug/mL. On dialysis, all extracts lost their lipase inhibitory activity indicating reversible nature of inhibition. pH significantly affected the performance of spice extracts during inhibition of pancreatic lipase. Most of the extracts lost their pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity at pH 3.0 with the exception of Brassica nigra and Cinnamomum tamala. Results showed spice are good source of pancreatic lipase inhibitor and its potential as drug for obesity can be explored by addressing various issues.

An investigation of chemogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles mediated enzyme activity inhibition under in vitro condition

Nanotechnology is currently exploited in the various fields of science and technology due to its unique effectiveness. Increased usage of nanotechnology principles, it is .necessary to study the non target effect. In the present study, the effect of chemically synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles on the enzyme activity of amylase, and protease extracted from fungal isolate of Aspergillus niger, phytase from Hypocrea lixii SURT01 strain, cellulose and lipase from Tricoderma horzianum and Xylanase from Fusarium oxysporum under laboratory condition. All the tested enzymes were obtained from culture free supernatant and the crude enzyme thus obtained was evaluated for nanoparticles mediated enzyme inhibition by studying enzyme activity after the nanoparticles treatment. Notable changes in enzyme activity was not recorded in the enzyme activity of the tested enzymes except amylase which revealed increased concentration of nanoparticles inhibited enzyme activity. Distinct inhibition was not observed in the other tested enzymes.

Antiatherosclerotic effects of small-molecular-weight compounds enhancing endothelial nitric-oxide synthase (eNOS) expression and preventing eNOS uncoupling

Many cardiovascular diseases are associated with reduced levels of bioactive nitric oxide ( NO) and an uncoupling of oxygen reduction from NO synthesis in endothelial NO synthase ( eNOS uncoupling). RNA interference-mediated knockdown of the transcription factor Sp1 significantly reduced the basal activity of eNOS promoter, but it did not prevent the transcription activation by the compounds. Enhanced transcription of eNOS by AVE9488 in primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells was associated with increased levels of eNOS mRNA and protein expression, as well as increased bradykinin-stimulated NO production. In both wild-type C57BL/6J mice and apolipoprotein E-knockout ( apoE-KO) mice, treatment with AVE9488 resulted in enhanced vascular eNOS expression. In apoE-KO mice, but not in eNOS-knockout mice, treatment with AVE9488 reduced cuff-induced neointima formation. A 12-week treatment with AVE9488 or AVE3085 reduced atherosclerotic plaque formation in apoE-KO mice, but not in apoE/eNOS-double knockout mice. Aortas from apoE-KO mice showed a significant generation of reactive oxygen species. This was partly prevented by nitric-oxide inhibitor N-omega- nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, indicating eNOS uncoupling. Treatment of mice with AVE9488 enhanced vascular content of the essential eNOS cofactor ( 6R)-5,6,7,8- tetrahydro-L-biopterin and reversed eNOS uncoupling. The combination of an up-regulated eNOS expression and a reversal of eNOS uncoupling is probably responsible for the observed vasoprotective properties of this new type of compounds.
