Efficient lipid extraction is one of the main remaining challenges for full-scale production of biodiesel from urban sewage sludge, a low-cost feedstock. The common approach is to extract lipids from dewatered or dry sludge by means of organic solvents. However, sludge dewatering and drying are energy-consuming and represent more than 50% of the total production cost. Direct liquid-liquid extraction of lipids has been poorly explored; only extraction using hexane as solvent is described in the literature. This study focuses on the optimization of the extraction of lipids from wet raw urban sewage sludge at room temperature. This optimization is conducted varying solvent, pre-treatment, number of extraction steps, contact time and ratio sludge to solvent. The optimized method gives larger lipid amount (34.5%wt dry matter (DM)) than using hexane extraction (32.8%wt DM). Finally, the potential of lipid fractions extracted from eight sludge samples for biodiesel production was evaluated through the determination of acid value and free fatty acid (FFA) content, saponification number and fatty acid composition.

Two new cyanate monomers simultaneously containing phthalide group and different alkyl substituents on the phenylene rings (o-PCY and t-PCY) and the Phenolphthalein-based cyanate (p-PCY) were successfully synthesized by the reaction of o-cresolphthalein, thymolphthalein and phenolphthalein with cyanogen bromide in the presence of triethylamine, respectively. Their chemical structures were confirmed by means of FTIR, NMR and elemental analysis methods. All these monomers owned sufficiently wide processing temperature windows and could be readily cured without the addition of catalyst. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed that the introduction of phthalide structure into the polycyanurate network could effectively improve the thermal properties of the cyanate ester (CE) resin. Especially, the Tg values of the fully cured p-PCY, o-PCY and t-PCY resins are 362 C, 328 C and 298 C, respectively, which are apparently higher than that of most bisphenol-based cyanate resins reported in the literatures (190-290 C). The thermal and thermo-oxidative properties as well as the water absorptions of the cured products were compared with those of the bisphenol A cyanate resin (BACY), and the structure-property relationships were explained according to the chemical structures and crosslinking densities of the formed polymer networks. The high-Tg thermosetting materials thus prepared are expected to expand the usage of CEs to areas where higher temperature requirements are encountered.

In this study, the synthesis of biodiesel or fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) from sunflower oil and methanol using CaO·ZnO catalyst was investigated. Catalyst was synthesized by ball milling of Ca(OH)2 and ZnO powder mixture with the addition of water (BMH), as well as solely by ball milling of mentioned powders (BM) and subsequent calcination at 700 C in air atmosphere. For comparison, the CaO·ZnO mixed oxide was also prepared using usual coprecipitation procedure (CP) followed by calcination at 700 C of the formed calcium zinc hydroxide hydrate. The BMH, BM and CP catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), particle size distribution measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM and SEM-EDS). In addition, specific surface area (BET), solubility in methanol at 60 C and alkalinity (Hammett indicator method) were also determined. The activity of BMH, BM and CP catalysts for biodiesel synthesis were tested at 60 C and 1 bar, using molar ratio of sunflower oil to methanol of 1:10 and with 2 wt% of catalyst based on oil weight.

The aim of this work is to investigate the luminescence color changes of thermosensitive luminous fibers (TLFs). These TLFs are comprised of rare-earth luminescent materials as the luminescence sources, reversible thermochromic crystal violet lactone (CVL) pigment as the luminescence conversion agent, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the matrix. It was found that the TFLs could not only change their color, but also convert the luminescence upon temperature change based on a structural transformation of the CVL pigment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements indicated that rare-earth luminescent materials maintained their basic crystal structure and the CVL pigment was not destroyed by the process of spinning. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of TLFs at the microcosmic angle showed that the CVL pigments were evenly distributed in the PAN matrix and formed a luminescence filter on the surface of the fiber. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA and DTG) results indicate that the TLFs possess satisfactory thermostability below 212.6 C. The color and luminescence of the TLFs were accurately exhibited on the CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates. The thermosensitive capability of TLFs was qualitatively verified by observing them in water at 40 C and it was found that the fibers had brilliant luminescence and vivid thermosensitivity.

Knowledge of the order of the effective nonlinear absorption in multiphoton photoresists is a key element in the development of improved materials for multiphoton absorption polymerization (MAP). The direct measurement of this nonlinearity has proven challenging. A new technique called 2-beam initiation threshold (2-BIT) is presented that allows for the unambiguous, in situ measurement of the order of the effective nonlinear absorption using a simple optical arrangement that can be employed with virtually any MAP setup. This technique is benchmarked using three common commercial photoinitiators that have been used previously in MAP and one common dye that acts as a photoinitiator. The linear absorption spectrum is demonstrated to be a poor predictor of the effective order of nonlinear absorption at a given wavelength. Surprisingly, for two of these initiators the effective nonlinear absorption process is dominated by 3-photon absorption in the 800 nm wavelength range, suggesting that 2-BIT is a valuable means of identifying initiators that can improve the resolution of MAP. (Figure presented.).

This review presents and contrasts some of the most commonly used methods for making such measurements. As background, we introduce the history of, and the essential physics behind, multiphoton absorption (MPA) and phenomena that can interfere with its measurement. Understanding the changes in the pore solution upon carbonation is crucial with respect to comprehending the mechanisms of reinforcement corrosion in carbonated mortar or concrete. In this paper we used Cold Water Extraction (CWE), a rapid leaching method, on profile ground powder from partially carbonated Portland cement and Portland-fly ash cement mortars to study changes in the pore solution composition. Carbonation decreased the free alkali metal content measured with CWE, which matched with the portlandite profiles determined by thermogravimetry and the carbonation depth detected with pH indicator. The alkali metal uptake by carbonation products was confirmed by SEM-EDS and thermodynamic modelling. Besides the decrease in the alkali metal concentration in the pore solution upon carbonation, we observed for both binders a considerable increase in chlorine and sulphur concentrations. This can further accelerate corrosion in carbonated concrete.
