This research presents an efficient technique to enhance the catalytic activity, surface area and total basicity of CaO with hydration-dehydration process to be the catalyst for the transesterification of palm oil to biodiesel. The catalytic performance of the resulted catalyst was tested via transesterification reaction of palm oil at room temperature (30 ± 2 C) and was compared against commercial CaO and CaO derived from natural calcium carbonate sources. Under the optimal reaction conditions (catalyst loading of 5 wt%, methanol to oil molar ratio 12:1), FAME yields were approximately 94% for CaOHY and 60.5%, 55.3%, 49.5% and 51.4% for CaOcom, CaOegg, CaOgol and CaOriv as catalysts, respectively. Catalyst reusability and scaling up of biodiesel production from 50 mL to 1.5 L were also investigated. The obtained biodiesel product after purification and treatment process showed high quality fuel properties within the range of biodiesel standard and similar with high-speed diesel. Furthermore, the used CaOHY as a solid heterogeneous catalyst at room temperature was not only low-cost but also environmentally-friendly, showing a high potential in the biodiesel production.

Conductive materials have been incorporated in anaerobic bioreactors to stimulate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), a recently discovered microbial electron-sharing network. Previous studies emphasized the significance of electrocatalytic features associated with DIET, while research gaps are remaining in the understanding of how different operating temperatures and substrate variation will affect those electrochemical characteristics. Consequently, this study examined various electrochemical features, including biomass conductivity, pilA gene, heme-binding proteins, and electron transfers rates (kapp) for methanogenic biomass from conductive carbon fibers amended anaerobic bioreactors operated under different temperatures (20, 37, and 55 C) with substrate variation (ethanol/propionate). Our results demonstrated a distinct temperature-dependent correlation between biomass conductivities, pilA gene, and heme-binding proteins, suggesting operating temperature would influence the relative contributions of various DIET routes (via pili, redox proteins, and conductive materials). When fed with ethanol, the estimated kapp was the highest at 37 C (0.0033 s?1 vs 1.1 d?1), followed by 20 C (0.0018 s?1 vs. 0.74 d?1), and 55 C (0.0012 s?1 vs. 0.29 d?1), which were positively correlated with the estimated methanogenesis rates. While methanogenesis performance was independent of electron transfer rates (0.0026?0.0032 s?1) during operation with propionate; only carbon fibers amended bioreactor operated at 37 C showed stable performance in response to substrate variation. Thus, it appeared that bioreactors operated under different temperatures might face a different level of instability caused by substrate variation. Overall, our results linked electrocatalytic features of biomass with temperature and substrate variation, suggesting the importance of temperature-dependent optimization of DIET for improving anaerobic digestion of complex organic feedstock.

Advances in the fields of sensors and biosensors has enabled the development of new materials, devices, and multifunctional sensing systems to monitor the quality of food. In this Review, we place the focus on an in-depth summary of the recent technological advances that hold the potential for being incorporated into food packaging to ensure food quality, safety, or monitoring of spoilage. These advanced sensing systems usually target monitoring gas production, humidity, temperature, and microorganisms’ growth within packaged food. The implementation of portable and simple-to-use hand-held devices is also discussed in this Review. We highlight the mechanical and optical properties of current materials and systems, along with various limitations associated with each device. The technologies discussed here hold great potential for applications in food packaging and bring us one step closer to enable real-time monitoring of food throughout the supply chain.

Organic dyes derived from phthaleins have a large number of industrial applications and can be synthesized using a Lewis acid by Friedel?Crafts acylation, followed by an addition reaction to the carbonyl compound. This work aims to investigate the use of NbCl5 as a catalyst for the acylation reaction. The behavior of the phthalein derivatives in several solvents and when subjected to different pH conditions was studied. These compounds showed a color-changing effect depending on the pH and solvent, making them useful for applications as indicators. The phthaleins change their conformations depending on the condition of the medium. Photophysical studies of these compounds were carried out through their UV?Vis absorption spectra. Here, we show the umbrella-like conformation change of phthalein derivatives that depend on the solvent and the pH of the medium.

Background: The colorimetric sensor array technology simulates human olfaction to analyze, identify and examine complex gas and volatility based on chem-responsive dyes. Unlike human olfaction and electronic noses, colorimetric sensor array is more objective and not susceptible to interference. In additional, with the visualization, rapidity and non-destruction of analysis, colorimetric sensor array has been increasingly applied in food science and industry. Scope and approach: This review focuses on the colorimetric sensor array technology and its major applications in food industry. Technical considerations associated with the chemo-responsive dyes, substrate materials, and data processing methods are discussed. In application, any type of food samples including solid, liquid food samples could be directly analyzed using colorimetric sensor array. Additionally, the recent development, and future research trends are also involved. Key findings and conclusions: The colorimetric sensor array technology offers an exciting method to establish the correlation between the output of a colorimetric sensor array and the odor components, thereby enabling visual quantification of odors. Objective This study analyzed the behavior of human osteoblasts cultured on porous titanium specimens, with and without biomimetic treatment, compared to dense titanium. Design The experiment had seven groups: Group 1: cells cultured on polystyrene of culture plate wells; Group 2: cells cultured on dense titanium specimen; Group 3: specimen with 33.79% of pores; Group 4: 41.79% of pores; Groups 5, 6 and 7: specimens similar to groups 2, 3 and 4, yet with biomimetic treatment. Real time-polymerase chain reaction with reverse transcription of the following genes was performed: prostaglandin E2 synthase, integrin beta1, osterix, Runx2, Interleukin 6, macrophage colony stimulating factor, apolipoprotein E and others. The study achieved data on cell adhesion, growth and viability, total protein content, alkaline phosphatase activity and quantity of mineralized nodule formations. Data were statistically evaluated. Results Adherent cells and alkaline phosphatase activity were similar in titanium specimens, regardless of the groups. Biomimetic treatment reduced the total protein activity and the viability of tested cells. Most tested genes had statistically similar expression in all groups. Conclusion The tested porosities did not cause alterations in osteoblast behavior and the biomimetic treatment impaired the biocompatibility of titanium causing cytotoxicity.
