Thermochromic microcapsules with highly transparent shells obtained through in-situ polymerization of urea formaldehyde around thermochromic cores for smart wood coatings

In this paper, thermochromic microcapsules were synthesized in situ polymerization with urea formaldehyde as shell material and thermochromic compounds as core material. The effects of emulsifying agent and conditions on surface morphology and particle size of microcapsules were studied. It was found that the size and surface morphology of microcapsules were strongly depending on stirring rate and the ratio of core to shell. The stable and small size spherical microcapsules with excellent transparency can be obtained at an emulsifying agent to core to shell ratio as 1:5:7.5 under mechanical stirring at 12 krpm for 15 min. Finally, the thermochromic property was discussed by loading microcapsules in wood and wood coatings. Results indicate that microcapsules can realize the thermochromic property while incorporated with wood and coatings, and could have high potential in smart material fabrication.

Bio-resins, polyaddition product of epoxidized soybean oil and bisphenol A or hydroxylated soybean oil and low molecular weight epoxy resin, were synthesized via modern and pro-ecological modification of the synthesis of epoxies, namely, the epoxy fusion process. The obtained polyaddition product contains free epoxy and hydroxyl groups, which are suitable for the curing purposes. Material cured with Desmodur BL 1265/MPA/X in the presence of organometallic or amine catalyst (respectively: Dabco T9 and Dabco 33-LV) is characterized by mechanical properties better than the composition crosslinked without the catalyst. Additionally, there is a possibility of the synthesis of two-layer materials by chemical bonding of two different compositions via the previously unused oxirane groups of the cured ESBO_BPA or SMEG_EPR products.

Polymeric pH indicators immobilized PVA membranes for optical sensors of high basicity based on a kinetic process

Two kinds of polymeric pH indicators PPF (phenolphthalein-formaldehyde product) and CPF (o-cresolphthalein-formaldehyde product) immobilized cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes (PPF-PVA and CPF-PVA) for optical intermittent determination of high basicity ([OH-] = 1-8 M) based on a kinetic process were developed. In our previous work, we had demonstrated that PPF-PVA and CPF-PVA could perform the determination of high pH values from pH 10.0 to 14.0. Here the discoloring kinetic behaviors of PPF-PVA and CPF-PVA were compared with those of free phenolphthalein, o-cresolphthalein and thymolphthalein. Experimental results and theoretical analysis indicated that the response behaviors of the optodes’ membranes in concentrated NaOH solutions were diffusion-independent and still complied with the pseudo-first-order kinetics. In addition, two data analysis methods for determination were presented. One was directly based on the reduced absorbance; the other was based on the discoloring kinetic constant. It was found that the latter could perform a rapid (60 s) and reliable (relative standard deviation: 2.6%) determination for high basicity. These kinds of optodes can be used repeatedly when they are immersed in low-pH solutions to regain the protonated form after each determination.

Effect of catalytic vapour cracking on fuel properties and composition of castor seed pyrolytic oil

In this work, catalytic upgrading was carried out to enhance the yield and quality of castor seed pyrolytic oil. The influence of catalytic vapour cracking of castor seed was performed over Kaolin, CaO and ZnO catalysts at various weight percentage of loading. This study confirmed that the yield varied with catalyst type and its amount of loading. The maximum pyrolysis yield of oil was obtained about 66.4 wt.%, 64.9 wt.% and 65.8 wt.% at 15 wt.% CaO and Kaolin and 10 wt.% ZnO respectively. The effect of catalyst on fuel properties were studied at that catalyst loading where the yield of pyrolytic liquid was higher. The fuel properties of castor seed thermal and catalytic pyrolytic oil were compared. The cracking of castor seed pyrolytic vapour over the bed of catalysts proved to enhance the fuel properties of pyrolytic oil for all catalysts. In comparison with ZnO, CaO and Kaolin found to have significant effect on enhancing the fuel properties in terms of viscosity, pH, calorific value and pour point. It was observed that in catalytic pyrolytic oil the number of acidic groups significantly reduced as they got converted to esters compared to thermal pyrolytic oil. The increase in the formation of nitriles and aromatics content in the catalytic pyrolytic oil was also noticed which were comparatively less in the thermal pyrolytic oil.

The industrial interest for microencapsulation techniques to produce innovative materials has increased in the last years. Microencapsulation shows several advantages for textile industries since active compounds, such as vitamins, essential oils, antimicrobials and/or antibiotics can be isolated to protect them from environment factors (oxygen, light, moisture and temperature). Microcapsules are also used for the controlled release of fragrances or even heat, to mask undesired properties of the active components and to convert liquid substances into solids with increased compatibility. In this review, the application of microencapsulation techniques to obtain innovative materials for the textile sector has been highlighted. The main known techniques have been briefly described, including interfacial, suspension and in situ polymerizations as well as spray drying, complex coac-ervation, centrifugal extrusion processes, fluidized-bed-coating and sol-gel techniques. Different mechanisms have been also described based on the different properties offered by permeable or non-permeable capsules. Finally, the development and application of microencapsulation in smart (phase change materials, photochromic, thermochromic and flame retardant microcapsules) and active textiles, including antimicrobials and the use of different additives with pharmaceutical and/or medical properties, insect-repellent systems and fragrant solid carrier materials have been briefly discussed.
