Synthesis of dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA) corn starch

Dodecenly succinic anhydride (DDSA) starches were prepared commercially by the base catalyzed reaction of DDSA in pre-emulsion with starch granular in aqueous slurry. The results indicated that the degree of substitution and reaction efficiency were 0.0256% and 42.7%, respectively, at the parameters for the preparation of DDSA starches in starch slurry 30%, DDSA/starch radio 10% (wt/wt), pH 8.5-9.0, reaction temperature 313 K. After modification, product surface chemical composite had been changed which was prone to migrate into less polar solution. The chemical structural characteristics were investigated by methods of FTIR and 1H NMR. The results of X-ray diffraction showed the native A-type crystalline pattern, indicating that reaction of corn starch with DDSA caused no change in the crystalline structure. Compared to native starch, the hydrophobic performance of esters was greatly increased. With the DS increasing, contact angles were gradually increased, however, the adhesion works were decreased. The maximum contact angle of DDSA starch could attend to 123, and the corresponding adhesion work was 33.2 mJ m-2.

Synthesis of CaO?SiO2 compounds and their testing as heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification of sunflower oil

The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV?vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO¡¤SiO2 and 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 700 C, and 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 900 C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2?2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 700 C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.

A ?sense-and-treat? ELISA using zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 as carriers for dual-modal detection of carcinoembryonic antigen

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been widely used in the area of biological analysis, while there are still some challenges getting in the way to ensure both excellent sensitivity and reliable accuracy. To overcome these obstacles, we simulated the ?smart? sense-and-treat carriers in a drug delivery system to fabricate an improved ELISA, employing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the carrier to deliver the tracer agent carbon dots (CDs) and the ?drug? thymolphthalein (TP), which was referred to as a ?sense-and-treat? ELISA. In the ?sense? part, the strong fluorescence intensity of CDs could be observed directly to achieve the sensitive detection of the target. In the ?treat? part, after stimulation of alkaline solution, TP was released from ZIF-8 carriers and generated a color change with an obvious absorption, which was beneficial for increasing the sensitivity of this ELISA due to the high loading of the TP. Finally, we took carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a model and performed dual-modal detection using this improved ?sense-and-treat? ELISA to accomplish quantitative determinations sensitively and accurately. In addition, the results indicated by the two parts kept good concordance, which could demonstrate the reliable accuracy of this ELISA.

A calcium oxide-based catalyst derived from palm kernel shell gasification residues for biodiesel production

The fruit of oil-palm trees is used to extract millions of tons of palm oil annually across the globe. The extraction of palm oil leaves behind various residues such as empty fruit bunches, mill sludge and fibers, shells, and palm kernel cake. Considering the large amounts of solid organic wastes that are produced in oil palm mills, there is a need for their recovery and utilization. Palm kernel shells (PKS) are the most difficult fraction of the solid waste to decompose. In this work, PKS solid residues which had been subjected to thermal treatment in a gasifier were used as raw materials for the production of a calcium oxide (quicklime/burnt lime) catalyst. The produced catalyst was fully characterized by SEM-EDX, XRF, XRD, CHNS, TGA, and BET analyses. In addition, the basic strength and basicity of the catalyst were determined. The catalytic activity of the CaO-based catalyst was verified in transesterification of sunflower oil with methanol. The effect of the catalyst loading on the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) formation at a methanol-to-sunflower oil ratio (9:1) at 60C was studied. The results show that the calcium carbonate contained in the palm kernel shell biochars is a promising source for calcium oxide catalyst production.

The Thermal Stability and Rheological Properties of Alkylated Carboxymethyl Starch

Several alkylated carboxymethyl starches (CMS) with different alkyl chain lengths were prepared. The influence of the number of alkyls on the thermal stability and rheological properties, such as thickening properties, salt-tolerance, temperature sensitivity and time-dependent rheological behavior, are discussed. The initial decomposition temperature (IDT) of alkylated CMS reached 263C ?293C which, as compared to the IDT for CMS itself (230C), indicated that the thermal stability of CMS was improved after being alkylated. The solution viscosities of the alkylated carboxymethyl starch increased with the increasing of alkyl length. With the alkyl chain length increasing from C2 to C8, the viscosity increased from 400?mPa¡¤s to 38000?mPa¡¤s. The weak hydrophobic aggregation of the alkyl groups did not improve the shear-resistance and relative hysteresis area. But the temperature sensitivity of alkylated CMS was improved as the chain length of the alkyl groups increased, as the activation energy (Ea) value decreased from 2.082?kJ¡¤mol?1 to 0.077?kJ¡¤mol?1; Improving the rigidity of the molecular chains and reducing the network structure of the hydrophobic contribution to the viscosity of the solution are benefits for improving the salt-tolerance and shear-resistance of the aqueous solution.

Determination of fixed carbon in graphite ore by potassium dichromate oxidation-nonaqueous titration

After the organic carbon and carbonate were eliminated by low temperature combustion (which was lower than 500?) and addition of phosphoric acid to no bubble, the sample was placed and heated at low temperature in airtight experimental equipment system which was prefilled with oxygen. While, the fixed carbon (graphite carbon) in the sample was oxidized with potassium dichromate to generate carbon dioxide gas in a short time with sulfuric acid as reaction medium and silver sulfate as catalyst. After removal of hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen sulfide and moisture, the released gas was absorbed by the absorbent composed of potassium hydroxide, ethanol and ethanolamine (which was pre-adjusted to blue by ethanol-ethanolamine titration solution) and titrated by ethanol-ethanolamine titration solution with thymolphthalein as indicator. As for the titration end point, the blue color of absorbent should be kept for 1 min. On the basis of this, a determination method of fixed carbon with mass fraction less than 30% in graphite ore by nonaqueous titration was established. The proposed method was applied to the determination of fixed carbon in certified reference materials of graphite ore. The results were basically consistent with the certified values. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n=10) were between 1.1% and 3.1%. The fixed carbon in graphite ore actual sample was determined according to the experimental method, and the results were basically consistent with those obtained by gravimetric method and high temperature ignition-nonaqueous titration method. The recoveries of method were between 98% and 103%.

Tadpole-type amphiphilic dendrimers featuring a hexadecyl chain and two or three poly(amidoamine) dendrons (C16-mdenGn, where m is the number of dendron scaffolds (2 or 3) and n is the dendron (den) generation (G) number (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5)) were synthesized using hexadecylamine or N-hexadecylethylenediamine as central scaffolds. Contrary to our expectation, the C16-mdenGn dendrimers could be densely packed at the air/water interface owing to enhanced hydrogen bonding between amide groups in the case of higher generation numbers. Furthermore, the above dendrimers formed spherical micelles in solution at a concentration of 5.00 mmol dm?3 (pH 9), regardless of the dendron generation number. As the generation number was increased to 4 for C16-2denGn and 3 for C16-3denGn, aggregates of spherical micelles were observed. Enhanced methanogenic co-degradation of propionate and butyrate by anaerobic microbiome enriched on conductive carbon fibers

Recent studies have shown that the addition of conductive materials can promote direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between bacteria and methanoarchaea. This study demonstrated that carbon fibers could significantly stimulate methanogenic conversion of propionate and butyrate as co-substrate, while only butyrate was completely degraded in the unamended control bioreactor. In the carbon fibers-amended bioreactor, specific methane production (mL-CH4/g CODInitial) and methanogenesis rate (d?1) increased by around 2.4 and 6.7 times, respectively. Various electroactive bacteria were abundant in the carbon fibers-amended bioreactor, whereas different known fermentative bacteria were abundant in the control. Moreover, carbon fibers substantially increased the abundance of Methanosaeta species. These results suggest that electroactive bacteria could be involved in DIET with Methanosaeta species enabling co-degradation of propionate and butyrate. Additionally, electrical conductivities of the biomass were comparable in both configurations, indicating that carbon fibers were the primary route for DIET.

Biocomposites based on cellulose and starch modified urea-formaldehyde resin: Hydrolytic, thermal, and radiation stability

Two biocomposites based on cellulose (UFC) and starch modified urea formaldehyde (UFS) resin (F/U ratio of 0.8) were synthesized using the same procedure. The hydrolitical, thermal, and radiation stability of biocomposites are determined. Also, released formaldehyde during the acid hydrolysis is determined. Biocomposites based on modified UF resin have been irradiated with (50 kGy). Cellulose modified UF resin after gamma-radiation has 1.38% released formaldehyde; unmodified UF resin has 2.21% released formaldehyde. Thermal stability of biocomposites is determined using nonisothermal thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal gravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis with IR spectroscopy. Moving the DTG peak to higher temperatures indicates an increased thermal stability of cellulose modified UF resin, which is confirmed by the FTIR analysis. Gamma radiation most often causes a decrease in the intensity of the peaks in the FTIR spectrum.
