Beta zeolite exhibits satisfactory catalytic activity in the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers. However, the microporous channels of beta zeolite have adverse effects on mass transfer of macromolecules. In this work, it was found that the textural and acidic properties of catalysts could be improved by citric acid treatment. Extensive characterization confirmed that citric acid induced significant pore-expanding on catalysts, and its dealumination and realumination effect could lead to reduced amount of total acid sites and increased amount of Br¡ãnsted acid sites (BAS). Meanwhile, a good positive correlation was found between amount of external weak BAS and initial reaction rate. It was speculated that BAS with relatively weak acid strength might be the primary active sites in this reaction. Compared with the blank sample, the initial reaction rate of optimal catalyst was increased by 100 %, and the conversion of trioxane was increased by 86.5 %, indicating a significantly improved catalytic activity.

Effect of edta on quartz and hematite flotation with starch/amine in an aqueous solution containing mn2+ ions

In this paper, a detailed study of the influence of Mn2+ ions on quartz and hematite flotation (at pH 10.5 with starch/amine as depressor/collector) in the absence and presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is presented. By using zeta potential measurement and a careful analysis of manganese species present in water for dosages in which manganese hydroxide precipitated, we confirmed that the depression of both minerals by Mn2+ ions is due to the following: (i) the adsorption of Mn hydroxy complexes (Mn2 (OH)3+ and Mn(OH)+); (ii) Mn2+ and mainly (iii) the precipitation of Mn(OH)2 on mineral surfaces. These effects hindered the adsorption of amine species on the surfaces of the minerals (quartz and hematite). EDTA was used to complex Mn2+ to restore the recoveries of both minerals. This was confirmed by the species distribution diagrams of Mn and EDTA?Mn in water. Conditioning with starch followed by amine at pH 10.5 enabled a selective separation of these minerals.

Effects of elevated O3 exposure on nutrient elements and quality of winter wheat and rice grain in Yangtze River Delta, China

With the open-top chambers (OTCs) in situ in Yangtze River Delta, China in 2007 and 2008, the effects of elevated O3 exposure on nutrient elements and quality of winter wheat and rice grain were investigated. Grain yield per plant of winter wheat and rice declined in both years. The N and S concentrations increased under elevated O3 exposure in both years and C-N ratios decreased significantly. The concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, P, Mn, Cu and Zn in winter wheat and the concentrations of Mg, K, Mn and Cu in rice increased. The concentrations of protein, amino acid and lysine in winter wheat and rice increased and the concentration of amylose decreased. The increase in the nutrient concentration was less than the reduction of grain yield in both winter wheat and rice, and, hence, the absolute amount of the nutrients was reduced by elevated O3.

Procedures for the extraction-spectrophotometric determination of tris(2-chloroethyl)amine, an alkylating agent known as a drug as well as a chemical warfare agent (nitrogen mustard HN-3), with 7 acid-base indicators of a triphenylmethane lactone type, phthaleins, were developed. Representatives of phthaleins without an oxygen bridge (thymolphthalein, o-cresolphthalein, naphtholphthalein) and with an oxygen bridge (fluorescein, 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein, eosin B and eosin Y) were used. The methods were based on the formation of ion pair complexes. Chloroform was used as a non-polar solvent for an extraction. The conditions to determine were optimized for the optimal pH of the buffer and the concentration of a phthalein as a reagent. The dependence on the reaction time in a water phase and the stoichiometry of extraction products were studied. The detection limits and the limits of the determination of separate procedures and conditional extraction constants were determined. Comparison with the spectrophotometric method of the group determination of alkyl halides and acyl halides using alkaline ethanol-water solution of thymolphthalein, the so-called T-135 agent, was conducted. Homogeneously and heterogeneously base-catalyzed sunflower oil methanolysis was investigated without and with the presence of the cosolvents. In the former case, KOH and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were used as a catalyst and a cosolvent, respectively, and the reaction was performed at the reaction temperature of 10 C and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6: 1. In the latter case, CaO and various organic solvents such as THF, n-hexane, dioxane, diethyl ether, triethanolamine, ethyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone were employed as a solid catalyst and a cosolvent, respectively, and the reaction was carried out at the reaction temperature of 60 C and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6: 1. The rate of KOH-catalyzed sunflower oil methanolysis increased with increasing the THF concentration up to 50% of the oil mass, which was due to the self-enhancement of the interfacial area as the result of decreasing the mean drop size. No effect of THF present at the concentration of 20% on the rate of CaO-catalyzed methanolysis was observed, but at higher THF concentrations, the reaction was delayed and the final fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield was decreased. Of all tested cosolvents, only n-hexane and THF slightly improved the methanolysis reaction in its initial period, triethanolamine and ethyl acetate had no effect, while diethyl ether, dioxane and methyl ethyl ketone negatively influenced the reaction rate and the FAME yield.

Mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion of lipid-extracted microalgae N. gaditana for methane production

In the last years, a huge effort has been made to make biodiesel production from microalgae a feasible option. Besides the potential of biodiesel for replacing fossil fuels as a cleaner alternative, some limitations have still to be overcome. Among them, the low energy yields of the process and the high-energy requirements of the harvesting and drying steps lead to a high cost per litre of fuel. In this context, anaerobic digestion of the microalgal biomass after lipid extraction can improve the energy balance of the process, by producing methane and revalorizing a waste generated during biodiesel production. In this study, the production of biogas by anaerobic digestion of the marine microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana after oil extraction was studied. As the hydrolysis is known to be the rate-limiting step of anaerobic digestion of solid substrates, the influence of the process temperature on this step was assessed. For this purpose, two different anaerobic sludges, i.e. mesophilic (35 C) and thermophilic (55 C), were used as inocula for different batch tests and for two continuous anaerobic bioreactors. The influence of the oil extraction process on the structural integrity of the microalgae was also studied. The results obtained from scanning electron microscopy and flow cytometry showed that the lipid extraction did not cause cell lysis, but the structure of their surface was affected by the process. Batch assays showed that thermophilic conditions did not improve the biomethane potentials when compared to mesophilic conditions. Two continuous anaerobic bioreactors operated for 120 days confirmed the batch results. However, measurements of the chemical oxygen demand showed that the soluble fraction in the thermophilic reactor was higher than under mesophilic conditions, indicating an improved hydrolysis step. This was confirmed by the results of scanning electron microscopy and flow cytometry, which suggested a more intense disintegration of microalgae in the thermophilic reactor, indicating a greater degree of hydrolysis. Nevertheless, this advantage of thermophilic temperatures over mesophilic conditions did not improve the methane productivity.

Formation of alkoxy groups in the synthesis of butylated urea formaldehyde resins: Reaction mechanism and kinetic model

Water-resistant amino resins have found diverse applications in the paint and coatings industry. Butylated urea formaldehyde (BUF) amino resins exhibit excellent water-resistant properties due to the presence of butyl groups in its molecular structure. BUF resins are typically synthesized in two steps via addition and condensation reactions. Here, we develop detailed reaction mechanism for the BUF synthesis and develop the kinetic model for the addition reactions. The species in the mechanism are represented in a generic fashion and thus, our mechanism can be utilized not only for the BUF condensation reactions but also for the synthesis of other amino resins. The mechanism incorporates species containing, ?CH2?O?CH2? linkages and the new ?CH2?O?C4H9 end group, the presence of which have been confirmed experimentally. Further, the kinetic model for the addition reactions is developed and the values of the rate constants are determined from the isothermal experiments conducted at different temperatures. We demonstrate that the predictions from our kinetic model match the experimental observations for reaction synthesis under non-isothermal conditions. In addition, we also predict the transient behavior of intermediate species including ?CH2?O?CH2? linkages and ?CH2?O?C4H9 end groups, which qualitatively matches our experimental findings. The presence of these linkages opens up new possibilities to design resin-based composite materials, where functionality of oxygen can be utilized to graft nanomaterials onto the oligomers in subsequent steps. Our mechanism and the kinetic model can also be utilized for the optimization of the process conditions required for synthesis of resin with tailor-made properties.
