The regioselective formation of the 6-lithio derivative of 1,5-dichloro-2,4-dimethoxybenzene (i.e., 12) by directed ortho metalation (DoM) with nBuLi in THF is described. Although literature reports suggest direct deprotonation at C6, time-course and labeling studies revealed that deprotonation rather occurs exclusively at C3 followed by isomerization of the anion to C6. By contrast, when DoM was performed in Et2O, deprotonation again occurred selectively at C3, but now no isomerization occurs, and electrophilic capture produces the regioisomer of that produced in THF. In these labeling studies, deuterium has an enormous kinetic isotope effect (KIE) that suppresses not only the original DoM reaction at C3 when deuterium is present there, but also suppresses isomerization to C6 when the label is at that site. Remarkably, this protecting-group role of the deuterium is unique to THF; in ether, full deprotonation of the deuterium at C3 was observed

Aim of the study: This study was aimed at investigating the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract (MMB) and compounds isolated from the stem bark of Morus mesozygia, namely 3β-acetoxyurs-12-en-11-one (1), moracin Q (2), moracin T (3), artocarpesin (4), cycloartocarpesin (5), moracin R (6), moracin U (8), moracin C (9), and moracin M (10). Materials and Methods: The liquid microdilution assay was used in the determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimal microbicidal concentration (MMC), against nine bacterial and two fungal species. Results: The results of the MIC determination showed that the compounds 3, 4, 8 and 9 were able to prevent the growth of all tested microbial species. All other samples showed selective activities. Their inhibitory effects were noted on 90.9% studied organisms for the crude extract, 81.8% for compound 6, 72.7% for compound 10, 63.6% for compound 1, 54.5% for compound 5, and 45.5% for compound 2. The lowest MIC value of 39 μg/mL was obtained with the crude extract against Escherichia coli. The corresponding value for compounds (5 μg/mL) was registered with compound 9 on Shigella dysenteriae and compound 3 on E. coli, S. dysenteriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi and Bacillus cereus. The lowest MIC value (39 μg/mL) observed with the crude extract (on E. coli) was only eightfold greater than that of gentamycin used as reference antibiotic (RA) while the corresponding value (5 μg/mL) recorded with compounds 3 and 9 was equal to that of RA on the corresponding microorganisms. Conclusions: The obtained results highlighted the interesting antimicrobial potency of M. mesozygia as well as that of the studied compounds, and provided scientific basis for the traditional use of this species.

The use of facemasks by the general population is recommended worldwide to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Despite the evidence in favor of facemasks to reduce community transmission, there is also agreement on the potential adverse effects of their prolonged usage, mainly caused by CO2 rebreathing. Herein we report the development of a sensing platform for gaseous CO2 real-time determination inside FFP2 facemasks. The system consists of an opto-chem. sensor combined with a flexible, battery-less, near-field-enabled tag with resolution and limit of detection of 103 and 140 ppm resp., and sensor lifetime of 8 h, which is comparable with recommended FFP2 facemask usage times. We include a custom smartphone application for wireless powering, data processing, alert management, results displaying and sharing. Through performance tests during daily activity and exercise monitoring, we demonstrate its utility for non-invasive, wearable health assessment and its potential applicability for preclin. research and diagnostics.

A CO2 measurement system (0-100%) based on a paired emitter-detector diode arrangement as a colorimetric detector is described. Two different configurations were tested. Configuration 1 (opposite side configuration), where a secondary inner filter effect accounted for CO2 sensitivity, involved absorption of phosphorescence emitted from a CO2-insensitive luminophore by an acid-base indicator. Configuration 2, where the luminophore-containing membrane was removed, simplified the sensing membrane which now only contained the acid-base indicator. Also, 2 different instrumental configurations were assessed, using a paired emitter/detector diode system consisting of 2 light-emitting diodes (LED) where one diode was used as the light source (emitter) and the other diode was used in reverse bias mode as the light detector. The first configuration used a green LED as emitter and a red LED as detector; the second configuration used 2 identical red LED as emitter and detector. The system was characterized for sensitivity, dynamic response, reproducibility, stability, and temperature influence. Results showed configuration 2 had a better CO2 response in terms of sensitivity.

A new water-based sensor for carbon dioxide containing an ionic liquid is presented. The sensor is based on the acidity of the CO2 mol. The sensor incorporates an ionic liquid in the matrix, which enhances CO2 solubility, and minimising the response and recovery times of the sensor. The entire concentration range (0-100%) of CO2 in water has been studied. The sensor is more sensitive at low CO2 concentrations as is usual in this kind of optical sensor. As the sensor is intended for smart food packaging, one of the most important characteristics is stability, and this has been studied under different conditions of light, temperature and relative humidity. The sensor was found to be stablef or more than 14 days, which is the period of use for the intended application. Pork chops were packed at 4 °C and the production of CO2 studied in conjunction with total bacterial counts over a period of 14 days. The results show that the concentration of CO2 dioxide increases in time, in correlation with bacterial counts. As the threshold of CO2 content for human consumption of this meat is 20%, the sensor has been optimized for detection around this concentration

In this work we present a full-passive flexible multigas sensing tag for the determination of oxygen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and relative humidity readable by a smart-phone. This tag is based on near field communication (NFC) technol. for energy harvesting and data transmission to a smart-phone. The gas sensors show an optic response that is read through high-resolution digital color detectors. A white LED is used as the common optical excitation source for all the sensors. Only a reduced electronics with very low power consumption is required for the reading of the optical responses and data transmission to a remote user. An application for the Android operating system has been developed for the power supplying and data reception from the tag. The responses of the sensors have been calibrated and fitted to simple functions, allowing a fast prediction of the gases concentration Cross-sensitivity has also been evaluated, finding that in most of the cases it is negligible or easily correctable using the rest of the readings. The election of the target gases has been due to their importance in the monitoring of modified atm. packaging. The resolutions and limits of detection measured are suitable for such kinds of applications.
