Sugarcane tops were extracted with 50% ethanol and fractionated by petroleum ether, Et acetate (EtOAc), and Bu alc. successively. Eight phenolic compounds in EtOAc extracts were purified through silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatogs., and then identified by NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectra. The results showed that eight phenolic compounds from EtOAc extracts were identified as caffeic acid, cis-p-hydroxycinnamic acid, quercetin, apigenin, albanin A, australone A, moracin M, and 5′-geranyl-5,7,2′,4′-tetrahydroxyflavone. The antioxidant and nitrite-scavenging capacities of different solvent extracts correlated pos. with their total phenolic (TP) contents. Amongst various extracts, EtOAc extracts possessed the highest TP content and presented the strongest oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), 1,1′-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging capacity, 2,2′-azobis-3-ethylbenthiaazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical-scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and nitrite-scavenging capacity. Thus, sugarcane tops could be promoted as a source of natural antioxidant.

Deprotonative cupration of various functionalized benzenes with TMP-cuprate proved effective for the direct generation of o-functionalized Cu aromatic and heteroaromatic derivatives, particularly those with electrophilic functional groups, such as cyano, amide, and halogens. Direct cupration, followed by electrophilic trapping, provided a convenient preparative method for 1,2- or 1,2,3-multisubstituted aromatic compounds, e.g. 95 % 2-iodo-1,3-dimethoxybenzene from 1,3-dimethoxybenzene. The functionalized aromatic cuprate intermediates also undergo oxidation reactions very efficiently and with high regio- and chemoselectivity to afford functionalized phenol, ligand(hetero)-coupling, or homocoupling products by appropriately changing the oxidants and cuprates. The crystal and mol. structures of (TMP)2Cu(CN)Li2THF were determined by x-ray crystallog.

Morus, a genus of flowering plants in the family Moraceae, comprises 10-16 species of deciduous trees commonly known as mulberries. The root bark, stem bark and leaves of Morus alba, M. lhou, Morus macroura are the main sources for arylbenzofuran derivatives including the moracins. A large volume of research has been carried out on moracins and their derivatives, which has shown the pharmacol. importance of this benzofuran heterocyclic nucleus. In this mini-review, we attempt to highlight the importance of moracins, as they have been a major source for drug development. Herein, the authors also summarize the current state of the art concerning the synthesis and medicinal use of moracins A-Z.
