Synthesis of new furan polycycles via photochemical reaction in neutral and acidic medium

New furan derivatives of o-divinylbenzenes were synthesized and their photochemical reactivity has been investigated in neutral and acidic medium. Depending of the structure of the starting materials and pH value, the new cyclization (11, 16, 20), cycloaddiotion (12, 13, endo-17, exo-18), electrocyclization (21, 22) and dimeric (15, 19) products were isolated. While photochemical investigation in neutral medium showed that the main intramolecular process is cycloaddition, in the case of acidic photochemistry, due to the protonation of the starting molecule, electrocyclization process comes to expression and formation of dihydronaphtalene products 21 and 22.

Structural activity relationships and 3D-QSAR analysis have been carried out by Topomer Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (CoMFA). Training set of 42 and test set of 8 active compounds were used to develop the method that showed cross-validated correlation coefficient (q 2) of 0.815, standard error of prediction of 0.36, non-cross-validated correlation coefficient (r 2) of 0.973, and standard error of estimate of 0.14 with six components. Pyrolysis of poplar wood sawdust by TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS

Pyrolysis of certain poplar wood sawdust (PWS) was studied by thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). Different heating rates were applied with final temperature of 950 C and about 80% loss weight was observed at the heating rate of 20-80 C/min. The temperature trend of evolving gaseous products of PWS was also investigated. Following experimental research on pyrolysis of PWS was carried out on a pyrolysis-gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Associated with the analysis results of TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS for the pyrolytic products, PWS undergoes in three consecutive stages, corresponding to (1) moisture evaporation, (2) thermal decomposition, and (3) further carbonization. The main pyrolysis sections and the maximum weight loss rates are similar for different heating rates. Carbonyls, including aldehydes and ketones, are the main volatile products, in addition to phenols, furans, benzenes, acids, and so on. As the main gaseous products, CO, CO2, CH4 are released out greatly. Furthermore, possible pyrolysis mechanisms of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in biomass including PWS were also proposed. All of the results and findings would help further understanding of thermal behavior of PWS and its thermo-chemical utilization for fuels and chemicals.

An improved and scale-up synthesis of 6-hydroxybenzofuran

An optimized process for the preparation of 6-hydroxybenzofuran is described. This process consists of three steps: the reaction of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde with chloroacetic acid, the formation of the 6-methoxybenzofuran in acetic anhydride, and the demethylation with sodium 1-dodecanethiolate to afford the desired product. The entire process is safe, cost effective, environmentally benign, and scalable. A production scale of over 2.6?kg product was achieved in good overall yield.
