In this article, a crucial compound, crystal violet lactone (CVL), was prepared by the reaction of N,N-dimethylaniline, p-dimethylanimobenzaldehyde and m-dimethylanimobenzoic acid. Taking alcohols or carboxylic acids as solvents, 15 novel reversible thermochromic complexes were prepared by means of chelation reaction between electron donor CVL and electron acceptor such as various phenols, aromatic amines, carboxylic acids, and Lewis acids, respectively. The structure of CVL is characterized by 1H NMR and MS. The reversible thermochromic behavior of these compounds are studied by DSC/TG, IR, and Raman spectrum. Results indicate that mechanism of these reversible thermochromic complexes is the lactone ring tautomerism when the temperature is low or high. Thermochromic color degree of these complexes is dependent on the acidity of electron acceptor and thermochromic temperature is dependent on the properties of solvent compounds. The properties of electron acceptor and solvent compounds also determined the thermochromic process of the complexes, which followed the first-order kinetic equation, and the values of energy of activity (E a) of thermochromic process are correlated with the components of the complexes nearly. The stronger the acidity of phenols is, and the deeper the thermochromic color degree is, the higher the value of Ea is, when electron acceptors are phenols.

On the basis of the transient absorption spectra, it can be concluded that triarylmethane cations are generated from the lactone precursors in the presence of OPPI in acetonitrile with a pseudo first order rate constant of 104 s-1. Color formation in the absence of OPPI is suggested to occur from the excited singlet states of the lactone via a biradical formed by photoinduced beta-bond cleavage.

Thermochromic microcapsules with highly transparent shells obtained through in-situ polymerization of urea formaldehyde around thermochromic cores for smart wood coatings

In this paper, thermochromic microcapsules were synthesized in situ polymerization with urea formaldehyde as shell material and thermochromic compounds as core material. The effects of emulsifying agent and conditions on surface morphology and particle size of microcapsules were studied. It was found that the size and surface morphology of microcapsules were strongly depending on stirring rate and the ratio of core to shell. The stable and small size spherical microcapsules with excellent transparency can be obtained at an emulsifying agent to core to shell ratio as 1:5:7.5 under mechanical stirring at 12 krpm for 15 min. Finally, the thermochromic property was discussed by loading microcapsules in wood and wood coatings. Results indicate that microcapsules can realize the thermochromic property while incorporated with wood and coatings, and could have high potential in smart material fabrication.

Different mechanisms have been also described based on the different properties offered by permeable or non-permeable capsules. The influence of polarity, viscosity, and hydrogen bond donating ability of the medium on the fluorescence behavior of crystal violet lactone (CVL), which undergoes excited state electron transfer reaction and exhibits dual fluorescence from two different electronic states, termed as CTA and CTB, has been studied in six different room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) using steady state and time-resolved emission techniques. It is shown that the excited state CTA a?? CTB transformation and dual fluorescence of CVL can be controlled by appropriate choice of the ILs. While dual fluorescence of CVL is clearly observed in pyrrolidinium IL, the molecule exhibits a single fluorescence band in ammonium IL. While the second emission from the CTB state can barely be seen in 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ILs, dual fluorescence is quite prominent in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium IL, [bmMim][Tf2N]. These contrasting results have been explained taking into account the hydrogen bonding interactions of the 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ions (mediated through the C(2)-hydrogen) with CVL and the viscosity of the ILs. The excited state CT A a?? CTB reaction kinetics has been studied in IL by monitoring the time-evolution of the CTB emission in [bmMim][Tf 2N]. The solvation dynamics in this IL has been studied by following the dynamic fluorescence Stokes shift of C153, which is used as a probe molecule. A comparison of the excited state reaction time and solvation time suggests that the rate of the CTA a?? CTB reaction in moderately viscous ILs is primarily dictated by the rate of solvation.
