Composite phase change materials with good reversible thermochromic ability in delignified wood substrate for thermal energy storage

Phase change materials applied in the thermal insulation of building or storage system are beneficial to slow down internal temperature fluctuation and decrease energy consumption. Visible temperature change can provide convenience for people’s production and life. In this work, the thermochromic delignified wood composite phase change materials (TCDWs) composed of thermochromic (TC) compound and delignified wood (DW) are fabricated by vacuum-assisted impregnation method. Various techniques are applied to characterize mechanical and thermal properties of TCDWs. Results indicate that TCDWs exhibit suitable phase change temperature, large latent heat, good thermal reliability, as well as excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. More importantly, TCDWs have excellent reversible thermochromic ability and visibly show the phase change progress and temperature by color change from dark blue to off-white. The thermal insulation ability of TCDWs can reduce heat flow and heat exchange between inside and outside environment, maintaining the internal temperature for longer time. The largest absorption capacity of DW is 65%, which is 15% more than that of pristine wood (PW). The excellent reversible thermochromic, thermal and mechanical properties of TCDWs have great potential in thermal energy storage applications including thermal insulation, decoration, furniture, storage and building energy conservation.

Several of the dyes used in commercial carbonless copying systems act as singlet oxygen sensitisers, the production of which causes fading of the dyes [1]. A series of bis-(dithiocarbamato)nickel(II) complexes were synthesised and shown to be efficient singlet oxygen quenchers in solution in the presence of the acid activated clay. On the dry clay, however, only the hydroxyl-containing complexes were effective as they bound more efficiently to the clay. Fading was retarded more efficiently with fluoran TPM dyes, which produce more singlet oxygen, than phthalide TPM dyes. In some cases, the position and intensity of the lambdamax of the dyes was preserved efficiently.

Devices that offer this type of measurement capability in formats that can seamlessly integrate with the skin are therefore of interest. This paper introduces materials, device designs, and data acquisition methods for a skin-like, or ?epidermal,? system that combines colorimetric and electronic function for precise dosimetry in the UV-A and UV-B regions of the spectrum, and for determination of instantaneous UV exposure levels and skin temperature. The colorimetric chemistry uses (4-phenoxyphenyl)diphenylsulfonium triflate (PPDPS-TF) with crystal violet lactone (CVL) and Congo red for UV-A and UV-B operation, respectively, when integrated with suitable optical filters. Coatings of poly(ethylene-vinylacetate) (PEVA) protect the functional materials from sunscreen and other contamination. Quantitative information follows from automated L*a*b* color space analysis of digital images of the devices to provide accurate measurements when calibrated against standard nonwearable sensors. Techniques of screen printing and lamination allow aesthetic designs and integration with epidermal near field communication platforms, respectively. The result is a set of attractive technologies for managing UV exposure at a personal level and on targeted regions of the body.

The novel thermochromic and energy-storage microcapsules with significant extension of color change range to different tones

In order to solve the problem of narrow color change range for common thermochromic material, the novel thermochromic and energy-storage microcapsules (TCEMs) was designed and synthesized by in-situ polymerization. The TCEMs contained optimizational thermochromic components and phase change materials, and exhibited the dual functional performances of thermochromic and energy-storage. Then, the TCEMs were applied to polyester/cotton blend fabric with waterborne polyurethane by coating process. The growing process, exterior morphology, color change effect, temperature-regulable behavior and thermal activity of the TCEMs and the treated fabrics were investigated. The results demonstrated that both TCEMs and modified fabrics had good energy-storage effect and remarkable thermochromic property. Especially, while surrounding temperature changed from 15 C to 45 C, the colors of TCEMs and treated fabrics could change from cool-tone (blue) to warm-tone (red), which significantly improved the color change range of the thermochromic material and made the color vary between different tones instead of changing in the region of similar color. The TCEMs exhibited great potentiality in the applying fields of decoration, anti-counterfeiting, architecture and intelligent textile, etc.

Fabrication and characterization of reversible thermochromic wood veneers

Leuco dyes are widely used as functional materials for their thermosensitive chromogenic nature. The influences of thermochromic compounds and impregnation processing conditions on thermochromic wood veneer properties were investigated in this paper. The thermochromic compounds included thermochromic dye (ODB-2), color developer (bisphenol A) and solvent (1-tetradecanol). To achieve the maximum color change, the optimum mixing ratio of ODB-2 to bisphenol A to 1-tetradecanol was 1:2:60. Juglans mandshurica veneers were ultrasonically impregnated with reversible thermochromic compound suspensions. Analysis of variance showed that the influences of impregnation parameters on veneer color change were significant at the 0.05 level. The optimum thermochromic wood veneer can be obtained by impregnating with a thermochromic compound suspension for 2.0 min at 65 C. In this paper, the thermochromic properties of wood veneers were evaluated, and functional thermochromic veneers exhibited excellent properties and thermostability.

Influence of developer on structural, optical and thermal properties of a benzofluoran-based thermochromic composite

Thermochromic composites of benzofluoran dye, bisphenol A developer and octadecanol solvent were investigated to analyse how different molar ratios of developer influences the structural, optical and thermal properties. Increasing the amount of developer gives stronger absorption in the visible region and larger colour contrast between coloured and discoloured states. The colour clearing temperature of all studied composites is well below their melting point and the phase transitions are influenced only little by the content of the developer. The crystalline structure is fully controlled by the solvent; it changes from the gamma phase to the liquid at heating and returns through the rotator phase into the gamma phase at cooling. Crystallinity of the composites diminishes with the content of the developer, causing increased scattering of light. The dye: developer molar ratio equal to 1:3 was determined to be large enough to open lactone ring in all dye molecules. Colour hysteresis of such composites shrinks to practically single sigmoidal curve whereas the colour contrast still increases with higher amount of the developer. This effect could be attributed to developer – solvent interactions in a composite with lower crystallinity.

Monitoring crack appearance and healing in coatings with damage self-reporting nanocapsules

Autonomous highlighting of damage in protective polymer coatings allows on-demand maintenance and enables prolongation of the lifetimes of the coated materials. To monitor the entire cycle of damage occurrence and successful healing, one must be able to visualize both processes and display the current health-state of the coating. Herein, we equipped coatings with nanocapsules that can self-indicate their mechanical micro-damage via color development. Hence, whenever the coating was damaged, the capsules broke and highlighted the damaged spot. As a second feature, the color development was reversed and discoloration occurred in the presence of (self-)healing compounds, allowing the user to monitor the healing process. Thus, in the first step, damages were highlighted via color “turn-on” and in the subsequent step a propagating healing reaction “turns-off” the damage indication system to trace the healing reaction and allow monitoring of the entire health cycle.
