Formation of alkoxy groups in the synthesis of butylated urea formaldehyde resins: Reaction mechanism and kinetic model

Water-resistant amino resins have found diverse applications in the paint and coatings industry. Butylated urea formaldehyde (BUF) amino resins exhibit excellent water-resistant properties due to the presence of butyl groups in its molecular structure. BUF resins are typically synthesized in two steps via addition and condensation reactions. Here, we develop detailed reaction mechanism for the BUF synthesis and develop the kinetic model for the addition reactions. The species in the mechanism are represented in a generic fashion and thus, our mechanism can be utilized not only for the BUF condensation reactions but also for the synthesis of other amino resins. The mechanism incorporates species containing, ?CH2?O?CH2? linkages and the new ?CH2?O?C4H9 end group, the presence of which have been confirmed experimentally. Further, the kinetic model for the addition reactions is developed and the values of the rate constants are determined from the isothermal experiments conducted at different temperatures. We demonstrate that the predictions from our kinetic model match the experimental observations for reaction synthesis under non-isothermal conditions. In addition, we also predict the transient behavior of intermediate species including ?CH2?O?CH2? linkages and ?CH2?O?C4H9 end groups, which qualitatively matches our experimental findings. The presence of these linkages opens up new possibilities to design resin-based composite materials, where functionality of oxygen can be utilized to graft nanomaterials onto the oligomers in subsequent steps. Our mechanism and the kinetic model can also be utilized for the optimization of the process conditions required for synthesis of resin with tailor-made properties.

Maximising biohydrogen yields via continuous electrochemical hydrogen removal and carbon dioxide scrubbing

The use of electrochemical hydrogen removal (EHR) together with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) was demonstrated for the first time using a continuous hydrogen producing fermenter. CDR alone was found to increase hydrogen yields from 0.07?mol?H2?molhexose to 0.72?mol?H2?molhexose. When CDR was combined with EHR, hydrogen yields increased further to 1.79?mol?H2?molhexose. The pattern of carbohydrate utilisation and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production are consistent with the hypothesis that increased yields are the result of relieving end product inhibition and inhibition of microbial hydrogen consumption. In situ removal of hydrogen and carbon dioxide as demonstrated here not only increase hydrogen yield but also produces a relatively pure product gas and unlike other approaches can be used to enhance conventional, mesophilic, CSTR type fermentation of low grade/high solids biomass.

Undifferentiated pulp cells and odontoblast-like cells share genes involved in the process of odontogenesis

Objective Expression of a large number of genes during differentiation of undifferentiated pulp cells into odontoblastic cells is still unknown, hence the aim of this investigation was to compare undifferentiated pulp cells (OD-21) and odontoblast-like cells (MDPC-23) through the assessment of cell stimulation and gene expression profiling. Design The cells were cultured and after the experimental periods, there were evaluated cell proliferation and viability as well as alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) and mineralization nodules. To evaluate gene expression it was used fluorescence cDNA microarray technology in addition to bioinformatics programmes such as SAM (significance analysis of microarrays). Gene expression was validated by Real Time PCR (qPCR). Results The results showed that viability was above 80% in both cells, cell proliferation and ALP activity was higher in MDPC-23 cells and mineralization nodules were present only in the cultures of odontoblast-like cells. There were observed genes associated to odontogenesis with similar behaviour in both cell types, such as Il10, Traf6, Lef1 and Hspa8. Regions of the heatmap showed differences in induction and repression of genes such as Jak2 and Fas. Conclusion OD-21 cells share many genes with similar behaviour to MDPC-23 cells, suggesting their potential to differentiate into odontoblasts.

Bioremediation of synthetic fatliquors under microaerobic condition

Synthetic fatliquors are useful as a fatliquoring agent, flotation agent and emulsifying agent in a wide range of industrial applications such as leather, pharmacy and farm chemicals. These fatliquors remain recalcitrant to natural biota in existing treatment plants. In the present study, the isolated microaerophilic Serratia sp. HA1 strain CSMB3 is capable of utilizing structurally different fatliquors as the sole substrate for their growth under microaerobic conditions. Degradation of vegetable fatliquors was observed from 95 to 97% in terms of lipids, with the production of lipase at 72 h. Degradation of synthetic fatliquors was observed in terms of chemical oxygen demand from 85% to a minimum of 25%. It is in the order of sulfited/sulfated fatliquors > sulfochlorinated fatliquors > chlorinated fatliquors. A thin layer chromatography chromatogram confirmed the degradation of non polar fatliquor to polar compounds. Production of the red pigment prodigiosin in synthetic fatliquors enhanced the growth of the isolate. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the bioremediation of sulfochlorinated fatliquor into lipids and fatty acids and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) results confirmed that alcohols and esters are the final end products. Thus the isolated strain CSMB3 may be used in the treatment of wastewaters containing vegetable and synthetic fatliquors.

Microencapsulation of Three-Component Thermochromic System for Reversible Color Change and Thermal Energy Storage

In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate)/thermochromic system (PMMA/TS) and poly(methyl methacrylate-comethacrylic acid)/thermochromic system (P(MMA-co-MA)/TS) microcapsules were prepared by using emulsion polymerization method. The thermochromic system was consisting of crystal violet lactone (CVL) as a leuco dye, bisphenol-A (BPA) as a color developer, and 1-tetradecanol (TD) as a solvent. Microcapsules with different ratio of core/shell were synthesized to examine the effect of core/shell ratio on the properties of microcapsules. Phase transition temperatures and enthalpies, morphology, and particle size distributions of the microcapsules were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size analyzer instruments, respectively. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to prove the presence of the thermochromic system in the microcapsules. UV-Vis absorption bands of the thermochromic system (TS) and microencapsulated thermochromic system (MTS) at both below and above the melting temperature of the solvent were obtained by using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The visible color change depending on temperature was monitored for each microcapsule individually by using a digital camera. Spherical morphology and unimodal particle size distribution of the microcapsules were determined by means of SEM photographs and particle size distribution curve analysis. The mean particle sizes of the produced microcapsules varied in a range of 16.0-35.2 mum. The digital camera photographs and the UV-Vis absorbance curves proved that color changed between dark blue and light blue depending upon the temperature change. Meanwhile, the produced microcapsules were proven for an excellent heat storage capacity for thermal energy storage owing to phase changing of the tetradecanol solvent used in the thermochromic system. The melting enthalpy of the microcapsules ranged from 145.5 J/g to 193.4 J/g.

Colorimetric analysis of thermochromic samples in different forms employing a digital camera

The calibrated and characterised digital camera was used for the recording of a dynamic colour change of thermally treated three-component leuco dye based thermochromic samples in various forms ? bulk system, dry pigment, water- and solvent-based ink formulations, and their dry layers coated on different paper substrates. The study has proved that the proposed approach enables to examine the thermochromic behaviour through the individual stages of the thermochromic coating preparation process. The measured path in CIELAB colour space and derived characteristics of the dynamic colour change were obtained with higher time-temperature resolution than with previously employed methods, enabling to observe even the less distinct features. The most significant differences were related to the length and complexity of the colour path. Dry layers of the water-based thermochromic ink coated on papers had higher values of the total length of the path and the total colour contrast than the layers of the solvent-based ink. The colour of water-based coatings had higher chroma and also it was less influenced by paper substrate. When compared to the bulk thermochromic system, the dry pigment and dry ink layers on paper substrates exhibited a larger width of a hysteresis loop at the decolouration limit, mainly due to the decrease of the temperature at which the colouration starts on cooling.
