The flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of nalidixic (I) and pipemidic (II) acids were carried out by reaction with Fe(III) ions entrapped in a polymeric material and filling a packed-bed reactor; the released Fe(III) complexed with the quinolone is monitored at 426 nm. The method worked with a high reproducibility, even when using different reactors, days and solutions. Selectivity of the procedure was tested with different foreign compounds found in human urine as well as in pharmaceutical formulations containing both quinolones; no relevant interferences were observed. The calibration graph for (I) was linear over the range 1-250 mugml-1 with a relative standard deviation of 0.7% at 100 mugml-1 (n = 43). The calculated sample throughput was of 26 h-1. The LOD was (s/n = 3) 0.1 mugml-1. The calibration graph for (II) was linear over the range 10-500 mugml-1 with a relative standard deviation of 1.1% at 150 mugml-1 (n = 40). The calculated sample throughput was of 25 h-1 and the LOD was (s/n = 3) 1 mugml-1. The method was applied to determine the (I) in pharmaceutical formulations and of (II) in pharmaceutical formulations and human urine.

Synthesis of dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA) corn starch

Dodecenly succinic anhydride (DDSA) starches were prepared commercially by the base catalyzed reaction of DDSA in pre-emulsion with starch granular in aqueous slurry. The results indicated that the degree of substitution and reaction efficiency were 0.0256% and 42.7%, respectively, at the parameters for the preparation of DDSA starches in starch slurry 30%, DDSA/starch radio 10% (wt/wt), pH 8.5-9.0, reaction temperature 313 K. Compared to native starch, the hydrophobic performance of esters was greatly increased. With the DS increasing, contact angles were gradually increased, however, the adhesion works were decreased. The maximum contact angle of DDSA starch could attend to 123, and the corresponding adhesion work was 33.2 mJ m-2.

The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV?vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO¡¤SiO2 and 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 700 C, and 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 900 C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2?2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO¡¤SiO2 calcined at 700 C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.

The colorimetric chemistry uses (4-phenoxyphenyl)diphenylsulfonium triflate (PPDPS-TF) with crystal violet lactone (CVL) and Congo red for UV-A and UV-B operation, respectively, when integrated with suitable optical filters. Coatings of poly(ethylene-vinylacetate) (PEVA) protect the functional materials from sunscreen and other contamination. Quantitative information follows from automated L*a*b* color space analysis of digital images of the devices to provide accurate measurements when calibrated against standard nonwearable sensors. Techniques of screen printing and lamination allow aesthetic designs and integration with epidermal near field communication platforms, respectively. To overcome these obstacles, we simulated the ?smart? sense-and-treat carriers in a drug delivery system to fabricate an improved ELISA, employing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the carrier to deliver the tracer agent carbon dots (CDs) and the ?drug? thymolphthalein (TP), which was referred to as a ?sense-and-treat? ELISA. In the ?sense? part, the strong fluorescence intensity of CDs could be observed directly to achieve the sensitive detection of the target. In the ?treat? part, after stimulation of alkaline solution, TP was released from ZIF-8 carriers and generated a color change with an obvious absorption, which was beneficial for increasing the sensitivity of this ELISA due to the high loading of the TP. Finally, we took carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a model and performed dual-modal detection using this improved ?sense-and-treat? ELISA to accomplish quantitative determinations sensitively and accurately. In addition, the results indicated by the two parts kept good concordance, which could demonstrate the reliable accuracy of this ELISA.

Fabrication and characterization of reversible thermochromic wood veneers

Leuco dyes are widely used as functional materials for their thermosensitive chromogenic nature. The influences of thermochromic compounds and impregnation processing conditions on thermochromic wood veneer properties were investigated in this paper. The thermochromic compounds included thermochromic dye (ODB-2), color developer (bisphenol A) and solvent (1-tetradecanol). To achieve the maximum color change, the optimum mixing ratio of ODB-2 to bisphenol A to 1-tetradecanol was 1:2:60. Juglans mandshurica veneers were ultrasonically impregnated with reversible thermochromic compound suspensions. Analysis of variance showed that the influences of impregnation parameters on veneer color change were significant at the 0.05 level. The optimum thermochromic wood veneer can be obtained by impregnating with a thermochromic compound suspension for 2.0 min at 65 C. In this paper, the thermochromic properties of wood veneers were evaluated, and functional thermochromic veneers exhibited excellent properties and thermostability.

A calcium oxide-based catalyst derived from palm kernel shell gasification residues for biodiesel production

The fruit of oil-palm trees is used to extract millions of tons of palm oil annually across the globe. The extraction of palm oil leaves behind various residues such as empty fruit bunches, mill sludge and fibers, shells, and palm kernel cake. Considering the large amounts of solid organic wastes that are produced in oil palm mills, there is a need for their recovery and utilization. Palm kernel shells (PKS) are the most difficult fraction of the solid waste to decompose. In this work, PKS solid residues which had been subjected to thermal treatment in a gasifier were used as raw materials for the production of a calcium oxide (quicklime/burnt lime) catalyst. The produced catalyst was fully characterized by SEM-EDX, XRF, XRD, CHNS, TGA, and BET analyses. In addition, the basic strength and basicity of the catalyst were determined. The catalytic activity of the CaO-based catalyst was verified in transesterification of sunflower oil with methanol. The effect of the catalyst loading on the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) formation at a methanol-to-sunflower oil ratio (9:1) at 60C was studied. The results show that the calcium carbonate contained in the palm kernel shell biochars is a promising source for calcium oxide catalyst production.
