Novel benzofuran-2-carboxylic acids, exemplified by 29, 38 and 39, have been discovered as potent Pim-1 inhibitors using fragment based screening followed by X-ray structure guided medicinal chemistry optimization. Pterocarpus is one of the most widely used timber resources on the market. But the utilization rate has been low. In order to improve the utilization of Pterocarpus processing residue, as well as explore the reason of its good decay-resistance. In this study, the antifungal mechanism of Peterocarpes spp., aqueous extracts and ethanol extracts of three Pterocarpus species were studied. The antimicrobial active factors were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Italian poplar (Populus euramevicana cv. ?I-214?) wood was immersed in the extracts and then inoculated with both Coriolus versicolor and Gloeophyllum trabeum. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts were studied, and the mechanism underlying these properties were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the yield of ethanol extracts from the three Pterocarpus species was significantly higher than that of aqueous extracts. Pterocarpus soyauxii and Pterocarpus macarocarpus produced the highest yield of ethanol extracts (28.59%) and aqueous extracts (14.31%), respectively. With increasing concentrations, the antimicrobial activities of aqueous extracts of Pterocarpus angolensis and Pterocarpus macarocarpus gradually increased, while the antimicrobial activity of other extracts remained constant. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis identified a considerable number of phenols, ketones, amines, and aromatic compounds in all extracts, which is consistent with their antimicrobial activity and suggests synergism among the chemicals.

In this study, the synthesis of biodiesel or fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) from sunflower oil and methanol using CaO·ZnO catalyst was investigated. Catalyst was synthesized by ball milling of Ca(OH)2 and ZnO powder mixture with the addition of water (BMH), as well as solely by ball milling of mentioned powders (BM) and subsequent calcination at 700 C in air atmosphere. For comparison, the CaO·ZnO mixed oxide was also prepared using usual coprecipitation procedure (CP) followed by calcination at 700 C of the formed calcium zinc hydroxide hydrate. The BMH, BM and CP catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), particle size distribution measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM and SEM-EDS). In addition, specific surface area (BET), solubility in methanol at 60 C and alkalinity (Hammett indicator method) were also determined. The activity of BMH, BM and CP catalysts for biodiesel synthesis were tested at 60 C and 1 bar, using molar ratio of sunflower oil to methanol of 1:10 and with 2 wt% of catalyst based on oil weight.

It showed a long wavelength absorption band having an absorption maximum around 635 nm and the optical bandgap was 1.63 eV, which is lower than most reported conjugated polymers, including poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The photovoltaic properties were investigated by constructing bulk heterojunction organic solar cell devices using SM as the electron donor and fullerene derivatives, i.e. PC60BM and PC70BM as the electron acceptors with the device architecture ITO/PEDOT:PSS/SM:PC 60BM or PC70BM/Al. The effect of the SM/fullerene derivative weight ratio and the processing solvent were carefully investigated to improve the performance of the organic solar cells. The optimized organic solar cell with SM:PC60BM and SM:PC70BM cast from THF solvent, at a weight ratio of 1:3 showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of about 1.70% and 2.56%, respectively. The enhanced value of PCE for the BHJ photovoltaic device based on PC70BM is related to the better absorption of PC70BM in the visible region compared to that of PC60BM. The SM:PC70BM blends cast from a DIO-THF mixture and subsequent thermal annealing exhibited improved PCEs of 3.68% and 4.14%, respectively.
