Investigation of synthesis, characterization, photophysical and biological properties of novel antimicrobial fluorescent naphthalimide derivatives

A series of 4-amino-N-substituted-1,8-naphthalimide and 4-allylamino-N-substituted-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives were synthesized from intermediate 4-nitro-1,8-naphthalimide by imidation, reduction and allylation reactions. These compounds were characterized by thin layer chromatography (TLC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), 13C-NMR, liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy, UV- Vis spectroscopy and fluorimetry. 1,8-Naphthalimide derivatives with amino and allylamino groups in the C-4 position exhibit fluorescent emission on irradiation. In addition, synthesized compounds had biological properties due to the presence of sulfonamide group (-SO2-N-) in their structure. The absorption maximum wavelength of synthesized dyes that are fluorescent is in the range of 427-439 nm while emitting in the range of 526-528.5 nm. The absorption spectra of synthesized dyes demonstrated that the type of substitutions in C-4 position and N-imide of naphthalimide ring had small effect on their colour. The photophysical characteristics of these dyes were assessed, and their Stokes shift values were determined in dimethylformamide solvent. The results demonstrated that Stokes shift values were between 3860 and 4469 cm- 1. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of the dyes were evaluated against gram positive and gram negative bacteria and Candida albicans fungi using cup plate, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration methods. The results revealed that dye 10 had the most levels of antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi.

The TCICA/KF approach to oxidative fluorination of heteroatoms has emerged as a surprisingly simple, safe, and versatile surrogate to classically challenging fluorination reactions. Although polyfluorination (or chlorofluorination) of diaryl disulfides, diaryl diselenides, diaryl ditellurides, aryl iodides, and aryl(perfluoroalkyl)tellanes has been described, the application of this TCICA/KF methodology to aryl(perfluoroalkyl)sulfanes and selanes remains an area of unexplored chemical space. Accordingly, to address the ?missing links? in the developing series of chalcogen-based substrate reactivity, we report mild syntheses of metastable difluoro(aryl)(perfluoroalkyl)-lambda4-sulfanes and selanes. As only limited examples of these species exist in the current literature (accessible only by using F2 or XeF2/HF), we have carried out detailed structural analyses, primarily using NMR and SC-XRD data. In addition, we investigate the effect of the perfluoroalkyl chain on the outcome of oxidative fluorination, and, finally, we provide preliminary evidence that difluoro(aryl)(trifluoro-methyl)-lambda4-sulfanes may act as fluorinating reagents.

Antifungal activity of tautomycin and related compounds against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

The potential of tautomycin to control oilseed rape stem rot was investigated in this paper. Tautomycin produced by Streptomyces spiroverticillatus strongly inhibited Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, which causes oilseed rape stem rot. Tautomycin showed great inhibition of the mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates. The values of EC 50 and MIC were 3.26 ¡Á 10-4 mM and 6.52 ¡Á 10-4 mM, respectively. Tautomycin treatment also resulted in morphological abnormalities of S. sclerotiorum such as hyphal swellings and abnormally branched shapes, which were observed microscopically. Sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum soaked in the tautomycin solution for 24 h remained viable, but their ability to undergo myceliogenic germination on PDA plates was completely inhibited when the concentration of tautomycin reached 6.52 ¡Á 10 -4 mM. Tautomycin-treated oilseed rape leaves were found to have a low incidence of leaf blight caused by S. sclerotiorum. The activity of the protein phosphatase (PP) in S. sclerotiorum decreased by 41.6% and 52.6% when treated with 3.30 ¡Á 10-4 mM and 6.52 ¡Á 10-4 mM tautomycin, respectively. Cellular constituents also leaked from S. sclerotiorum cells incubated with tautomycin. The results suggest that the antimicrobial activity of tautomycin is due to the inhibition of the PP and then a change of membrane permeability. This paper also investigated related compounds that possess either a maleic anhydride or maleic acid moiety. Results showed 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride, diphenylmaleic anhydride and dimethyl maleate demonstrated significant activity against S. sclerotiorum. The values of EC 50 for these three compounds were 0.31 mM, 0.15 mM and 3.99 mM, respectively. The MIC values obtained for these compounds were 1.11 mM, 0.56 mM and 9.58 mM, respectively.

Novel thiophene-fused DCNQI derivatives 8 and 11 bearing four fluorine atoms have been obtained in good yield from the corresponding quinones by reaction with bis(trimethylsilyl)carbodiimide (BTC). The presence of four fluorine atoms leads to good acceptor molecules which form charge transfer complexes in solution with N,N?-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine.
