Vacuum co-pyrolysis of Chinese fir sawdust and waste printed circuit boards. Part I: Influence of mass ratio of reactants

Vacuum co-pyrolysis of Chinese fir sawdust (CFS) and waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) at different mass ratios were examined in this paper. The structures and contents of the pyrolysis oils were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography?mass spectrometry (GC?MS). The results showed that co-pyrolysis processes presented antagonistic effect in the yield of the total volatiles (liquid plus gas) at the experimental conditions, but it is beneficial to the formation of brominated aromatic compounds (whose total content in WPCBs pyrolysis oil was only 6.51?wt%, while in co-pyrolysis processes (CFS/WPCBs?=?4:1, 1:1, 1:4), they were 10.96?wt%, 7.98?wt% and 14.84?wt%, respectively). The co-pyrolysis processes were also analyzed by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis with evolved product analysis by FTIR. The results showed that the volatiles were mainly formed between 300 and 450?C, and after 450?C, there were mainly some noncondensable gases (CO2, CO and CH4) formed.

Study on pine sawdust pyrolysis behavior by fast pyrolysis under inert and reductive atmospheres

Fast pyrolysis of pine sawdust (PS) was investigated in a drop tube quartz reactor to understand the effects of temperature and atmosphere (Ar and H2) on the product yields, gas composition, bio-oil characteristics (organic composition and molecular mass distributions (MMDs)), and the carbon and oxygen conversion. The pyrolysis behavior and typical products from PS pyrolysis were also conducted using a thermogravimetry-mass spectroscopy (TG-MS) and pyrolysis-gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The results show that the highest oil yields can be obtained at 500?C of 55.09 and 54.41?wt.% under Ar and H2 atmosphere, respectively. In comparison to an inert atmosphere, H2 created lower oil yields but higher gas yields, especially for CO and CH4 yields, and narrower MMDs, smaller Mn and Mw, and fewer char especially at high temperatures. The high temperatures and H2 atmosphere contribute to the oxygen and carbon transferring from material to volatile, especially to the gaseous products. H2 can promote the secondary cracking of macromolecules and weaken the re-polymerization of anhydrosugar and lignin oligomers.

Continuous solvent-free synthesis of imines over uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2 catalyst in a fixed bed reactor

One-pot synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohols and anilines by heterogeneous catalysis in batch reactor has already been widely studied, but its high cost and low production efficiency limit its application in the fine chemicals industry. In this work, gamma-Al2O3 balls supported CeO2 catalyst (uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2) was prepared by a novel unsaturated-impregnation-precipitation method, and was employed as a catalyst for continuous solvent-free synthesis of imines in a fixed bed reactor. Under the optimal technological parameter of fixed bed reactor and reaction condition, uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2-500 C obtained remarkable 97 % yield of imine. After 20 days` continuous operation, the total isolated yield of imine and TONBA/CeO2 reached up to 81 % and 16838, respectively. Importantly, the catalyst could be reactivated in situ in the fixed reactor. Through detailed characterization, the extraordinary catalytic performance of uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2-500 C can be attributed to the abundant acid sites of gamma-Al2O3 as well as the synergistic effect between CeO2 and gamma-Al2O3.

Performance of bitumen coating sheet using biomass pyrolysis oil

The “green” production of bitumen has raised increasing interest in recent years to reduce the environmental, energy-related and petro-based concerns. Bio-oil, prepared by biomass pyrolysis, can be used as a substitute for petro-based bitumen in bitumen or bitumen-based coatings, for its similar properties of good adhesion and anti-corrosion characteristics as bitumen. However, although biomass is a renewable and widespread chemical resource, its high-valued utilization is still difficult. The feasibility that adding some bio-oil to traditional bitumen to form a bio-bitumen could help improve the properties of traditional bitumen was investigated. Bio-bitumen was prepared from biomass pyrolysis oil and applied to self-adhesive and doped hot-melt sheets. Results of physical properties showed that bio-bitumen is a potential substitute in bitumen coating sheet. The prepared coating sheet exhibited higher adhesion. Other performances, e.e.g, temperature stability, mechanical strength and temperature flexibility of coating sheet showed improvement in the presence of bio-oil, which indicated the suitability of bio-oil in coating sheet bitumen.

Effect of hot vapor filtration on the characterization of bio-oil from rice husks with fast pyrolysis in a fluidized-bed reactor

To produce high quality bio-oil from biomass using fast pyrolysis, rice husks were pyrolyzed in a 1-5. kg/h bench-scale fluidized-bed reactor. The effect of hot vapor filtration (HVF) was investigated to filter the solid particles and bio-char. The results showed that the total bio-oil yield decreased from 41.7% to 39.5% by weight and the bio-oil had a higher water content, higher pH, and lower alkali metal content when using HVF. One hundred and twelve different chemical compounds were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The molecular weight of the chemical compounds from the condenser and the EP when the cyclone was coupled with HVF in the separation system decreased compared with those from the condenser and EP when only cyclone was used.

Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric characterisation of the Italian Protected Designation of Origin “Altamura” bread volatile profile

Dynamic headspace extraction technique coupled to the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was applied to characterize volatile compounds of both crust and crumb of the Protected Designation of Origin Italian durum wheat sourdough “Altamura” bread. Volatile compounds of crust and crumb were characterized and statistically compared and their relative abundance was also calculated. A total of 89 compounds belonging to different chemical classes were identified in the crust. More abundant compounds detected in the crust were ethanol (20 ¡À 6%), 2-furfural (14 ¡À 7%) and 3-methyl-1-butanol (9 ¡À 5%). A lower number of volatile compounds (74) was identified in crumb, among which ethanol (32 ¡À 7%), 3-methyl-1-butanol (23 ¡À 6%) and 3-pentanol (7 ¡À 3) were the most abundant. The influence of different baking modes (wood- or gas-fired) on volatile compounds, macroscopic appearance and selected physico-chemical parameters (colour and texture) of bread samples were also evaluated. Samples baked in wood-fired oven showed larger amount of volatile compounds such as furans and aldehydes that could positively influence the flavour of the product. Crust of wood-fired breads showed higher amounts of compounds from Maillard reaction, resulting in harder and browner breads than gas-fired samples. Macroscopic appearance of crumb of wood-fired breads showed higher percentages of larger pores, being also less hard and cohesive than gas-fired samples.

Decoys for docking

Molecular docking is widely used to predict novel lead compounds for drug discovery. Success depends on the quality of the docking scoring function, among other factors. An imperfect scoring function can mislead by predicting incorrect ligand geometries or by selecting nonbinding molecules over true ligands. These false-positive hits may be considered “decoys”. Although these decoys are frustrating, they potentially provide important tests for a docking algorithm; the more subtle the decoy, the more rigorous the test. Indeed, decoy databases have been used to improve protein structure prediction algorithms and protein-protein docking algorithms. Here, we describe 20 geometric decoys in five enzymes and 166 “hit list” decoys-i.e., molecules predicted to bind by our docking program that were tested and found not to do so-for beta-lactamase and two cavity sites in lysozyme. Especially in the cavity sites, which are very simple, these decoys highlight particular weaknesses in our scoring function. We also consider the performance of five other widely used docking scoring functions against our geometric and hit list decoys. Intriguingly, whereas many of these other scoring functions performed better on the geometric decoys, they typically performed worse on the hit list decoys, often highly ranking molecules that seemed to poorly complement the model sites. Several of these “hits” from the other scoring functions were tested experimentally and found, in fact, to be decoys. Collectively, these decoys provide a tool for the development and improvement of molecular docking scoring functions. Such improvements may, in turn, be rapidly tested experimentally against these and related experimental systems, which are well-behaved in assays and for structure determination.
