Compared with kettle reactor, the present process can afford almost quantitative yield of phenol with reduced acid amount and shortened reaction time under higher reaction temperature. The microchannel process can also provide higher security of CHP cleavage. The microtechnology probably gives an alternative protocol for the production of phenol through CHP decomposition. In addition, the possible main reaction pathways for the CHP cleavage in microchannel reactor have been discussed according to the obtained results.

Ajuga chamaepitys (L.) Schreb, well-known as Camaepitium or Ground Pine, is an annual herb typical of the Mediterranean area accounting several uses in the traditional medicine. In this work we have, analyzed the plant iridoid fraction together with the essential oil composition and study of the plant indumentum. Finally, we assayed the polar extracts and essential oil obtained from the aerial parts for antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity on tumor cells. The analysis of the monoterpene glycosides allowed us to isolate from roots and aerial parts and to structurally elucidate by NMR and MS the following compounds: ajugoside (1), reptoside (2), 8-O-acetylharpagide (3), harpagide (4), 5-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-harpagide (5), asperulosidic acid (6), deacetyl asperulosidic acid (7) and 5-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-8-O-acetylharpagide (8), among which 5 and 8 were two new natural products. Chemotaxomic relevance of these constituents was discussed. The chemical analysis of A. chamaepitys essential oil by GC-FID and GC-MS showed ethyl linoleate (13.7%), germacrene D (13.4%), kaurene (8.4%), beta-pinene (6.8%), and (E)-phytol (5.3%) as the major volatile components. The micromorphological and histochemical study showed that iridoids and essential oil are mainly produced in the type III capitates and peltate trichomes of leaves and flowers. Biological evaluations of A. chamaepitys polar extracts and essential oil showed that the former were more potent as radical scavengers than the latter. MTT assay revealed that essential oil and ethanolic extracts were moderately cytotoxic on tumor cells with IC50 of 36.88 and 59.24?mug/mL on MDA-MB 231 cell line, respectively, and IC50 of 60.48 and 64.12?mug/mL on HCT116, respectively.

The thermal properties of residual char of basalt fiber (BF) reinforced intumescent coating (IC) obtained after high temperature burning were studied. Seven intumescent coating formulations were prepared in which the weight percentage of basalt is varied from 0 to 3 wt.% of the total formulation. The effects of BF weight percentage on fire resistance of IC, and char morphology and composition were also studied. The heat barrier effect was analyzed by using a Bunsen burner (ASTM E119). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to investigate the IC and residual chars. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity was calculated as a function of temperature to compare the structure and properties of char residues. Intumescent chars with different weight percentages of BFs (in particular formation of pores of different sizes) were firstly verified. The interpretations were not in agreement with the thermal conductivity data. IC-B3 is the formulation that contains 3 wt.% of BF had thermal conductivity value of 0.114 Wm?1 K?1. The morphological study confirmed that 3 wt.% of BF formed a network that protected the underlying steel substrate from temperature rise in the event of fire. TGA results showed that BF reinforced formulations; IC-B3 had 36.26% of residual weight at 800 C as compared to IC-B0, which had 27 wt.%. Elemental analysis showed that IC-B3 had enhanced carbon content of 63.1% in the residual char. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Pyrolysis-GCMS) revealed that IC-B3 suppressed the release of toxic gases as compared to IC-B0 and the average percentage of released gases decreased from 83.3%?57.1%.

The extraction of essential oils from Cinnamomum cassia bark and leaf was carried out by hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD). Chemical compositions of volatile compounds were determined by GC/MS, 1H-NMR and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The dominant constituents found in the essential oils were aromatic compounds (> 90%) including (E)-cinnamaldehyde (CAL) and (E)-cinnamyl acetate (CAC) as the major components. The thermogravimetry (TG) method was used to study thermal stability and volatilization of the oils at room temperature. The bark essential oils exhibited inhibitory effects against a bacterial strain, S. aureus and a yeast strain, S. cerevisiae at MIC value 200 mug/mL. The decomposition kinetic of the essential oils was studied via the isoconversional kinetic models using the TG data. Two the isoconversional models, Flynn?Wall?Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger?Akahira?Sunose (KAS) were used to determine activation energies (Ea) for decomposition of the essential oils.

Total yields of cigarette smoke constituents are greatly influenced by smoking behaviour, the tobacco blend as well as a variety of cigarette design parameters. Thereby, filter ventilation, i.e. diluting the smoke by providing a zone of microscopic holes around the circumference of the filter is one method to reduce the yield of ‘tar’ and other smoke compounds. However, little is known how these design variations influence the combustion conditions, and therefore, the overall chemical pattern of the smoke. In this paper single photon ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPI-TOFMS) is used to characterize and compare cigarettes on a puff-by-puff basis, which differ only in filter ventilation magnitude. The research cigarettes investigated were made from Virginia tobacco and featured filter ventilations of 0% (no ventilation), 35%, and 70%. The cigarettes were smoked under two different puffing regimes, one using the puffing parameters of the conventional International Organization for Standardization (ISO) smoking regime and a more intense smoking condition. Results show that every variation entails a change of the chemical pattern, whereby, in general, cigarettes with 0% filter ventilation as well as the intense smoking regime lead to a more complete combustion compared to the ISO smoking conditions and the high ventilated cigarettes. Changes in the overall patterns can also be observed during the smoking for individual puffs. Some substances dominate the first puff, some species are more pronounced in the middle puffs, whereas others are preferably formed in the last puffs. This demonstrates the high complexity of the occurring processes. Results might help to understand the formation and decomposition reactions taking place when a cigarette is smoked and offer scope for targeted reduction strategies for specific toxicants or groups of toxicants in the smoke.

The aim of this review was to provide an updated overview of studies on the medical-biological activities of Cinnamomum osmophloeum (C. osmophloeum) in vitro and in vivo and the potential therapeutic use of natural agents prepared from this plant for the alleviation of oral mucositis (OM). Reported articles were collected using web search engine tools. The systematic review was organized according to the preferred reporting items for reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. Additional sources were identified through cross-referencing to identify the potential use of C. osmophloeum in the alleviation of OM. The results disclosed that C. osmophloeum is comprised of bioactive ingredients that could act diversely as a reagent in anti-inflammation, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, antidyslipidemia, anti-cancer, renal disease therapy and anti-hyperuricemia capacities. Recent studies revealed that the overall effects on anti-inflammation, wound repair, and the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of its constituents would act as a potential remedy for oral mucositis. Up-to-date in vitro and in vivo studies on the medical-biological activities of C. osmophloeum suggested that C. osmophloeum and its constituents could be promising remedies as adjuvants in OM therapy and warrant further investigation.

The constant growth in generation of waste printed circuit boards (WPCB) poses a huge disposal problem because they consist of a heterogeneous mixture of organic and metallic chemicals as well as glass fiber. Also the presence of heavy metals, such as Pb and Cd turns this scrap into hazardous waste. Therefore, recycling of WPCB is an important subject not only from the recovery of valuable materials but also from the treatment of waste. The aim of this study was to present a recycling process without negative impact to the environment as an alternative for recycling WPCB. In this work, a process technology containing vacuum pyrolysis and mechanical processing was employed to recycle WPCB. At the first stage of this work, the WPCB was pyrolyzed under vacuum in a self-made batch pilot-scale fixed bed reactor to recycle organic resins contained in the WPCB. By vacuum pyrolysis the organic matter was decomposed to gases and liquids which could be used as fuels or chemical material resources, however, the inorganic WPCB matter was left unaltered as solid residues. At the second stage, the residues obtained at the first stage were investigated to separate and recover the copper through mechanical processing such as crushing, screening, and gravity separation. The copper grade of 99.50% with recovery of 99.86% based on the whole WPCB was obtained. And the glass fiber could be obtained by calcinations in a muffle furnace at 600. C for 10. min. This study had demonstrated the feasibility of vacuum pyrolysis and mechanical processing for recycling WPCB.

In this work, the catalytic effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) on the online fast pyrolysis of cellulose was investigated using a tandem micro reactor coupled to a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) system. This system was used in the following two different modes: in-situ and ex-situ. The results obtained with TiO2 were compared with those of zeolite (HZSM-5) under identical pyrolysis conditions. Levoglucosan was the major product in the non-catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose. As for the catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose at 500 C with TiO2 (in-situ), the peak of levoglucosan disappeared whereas aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and naphthalene were newly detected. In this case, oxygenated compounds such as furfural, furan, methylfuran were still observed for TiO2 whereas oxygenated compounds (i.e, furan, benzofuran, methylbenzofuran, acetone and 2-butanone) with low yields were observed for in-situ catalytic pyrolysis with HZSM-5. For ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose at 500 C using TiO2, oxygen-containing compounds were hardly formed, while various aromatic hydrocarbons were detected. When the ex-situ pyrolysis of cellulose with HZSM-5 was carried out, the yields of the aromatic hydrocarbons were comparable to those with TiO2.
