Novel magnetic Fe3O4/SiO2/P(GMA-co-EGDMA) composite nanoparticles grafted with hyperbranched/linear polyethylenimine ligands were fabricated. Subsequently, nano palladium was effectively anchored on this carrier through complexation between Pd2+ ions and multifunctional organic ligands, then a novel supported Pd nanoparticle catalyst with good dispersion and high loading of Pd nanoparticles was successfully prepared after the following reduction process. Afterwards, the as-prepared supported Pd nanoparticle catalyst was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TG and ICP-AES. Ultimately, the catalytic performance of the supported Pd nanoparticle catalyst was investigated by catalysing the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and arylacetylene. Research shows that the novel supported Pd nanoparticle catalyst exhibits very superior catalytic activity in catalysing the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and arylacetylene, even in the absence of the cocatalyst (CuI), and the side reaction producing the by-product (1,3-diyne) can be inhibited effectively. In addition, this supported Pd nanoparticle catalyst exhibits stable recovery and high catalytic activity, for it can be effectively reused 8 times without obvious loss of catalytic activity. Furthermore, the yields of the target products of the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between iodobenzene and phenylacetylene, 3-aminophenylacetylene and 4-(ethynyl)phthalic anhydride can reach approximately 79%, 78% and 95% after this novel supported Pd nanoparticle catalyst has been used eight times, respectively.

High thermally stable thermosetting polyimides derived from a carborane-containing tetramine

In this study, we report the preparation of thermosetting polyimides (PIs) based on carborane-containing tetramine and their characterizations. The novel tetramine 1,2-bis(4-(3,5-diaminobenzoic acid phenyl ester))carborane (CBNH) was synthesized and characterized firstly. Then, it was used in the preparation of two kinds of branched imide oligomers via the method of thermal imidization. The cure behavior of the obtained phenylethynyl-terminated oligomers was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The effect of carborane substituent on the thermal properties of PIs was studied by comparing with a similar structure without the carborane group. The thermal properties of PIs and carbon fiber/PI composites were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. Because of the introduction of high steric hindrance of carborane structure, the resulting thermosets and carbon fiber/PI composites had excellent thermal property with a high char yield at 800C (>66.5%) and a high glass transition temperature (up to 500C), respectively.

Developing a facile strategy to synthesize thermosetting all-aromatic liquid crystalline poly(esterimide)s (LCPEIs) at medium-low temperature and endowing LCPEIs with good processability and high thermal resistance are still two big challenges. Herein, a new solution polymerization based on direct esterification under 120 C is developed, overcoming bottlenecks of traditional melt and solution polymerizations. Besides, two new reactive LCPEIs (LCPEI-1 and LCPEI-2) terminated with 3-ethynylaniline (3-EA) were synthesized, and their structures and properties were compared with two control samples without 3-EA end groups. LCPEI-1 and LCPEI-2 not only show good processing characteristics including low melting temperature (Tm = 200 C), low melting viscosity, and good solubility in solvent, but their cured samples also have high glass transition temperature (Tg = 192 and 225 C) and high storage modulus, whereas control samples, even treated with similar thermal history as curing procedure for LCPEI-1 and LCPEI-2, have poor performances. Cured-LCPEI-2 exhibits the highest Tg among polyesters with low Tm values (<250 C) reported. The mechanism behind outstanding performances of LCPEIs is discussed. Novel addition-type imide oligomer (degree of polymerization: n = 1-10) derived from 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA), 2-phenyl-(4,4?-diaminodiphenyl ether) (p-ODA) which has asymmetric and non-planar structure, and 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride was synthesized for the matrix resin of high heat resistant carbon fiber-reinforced composites. The uncured imide oligomers (degree of polymerization: n = 1-4) showed good solubility (more than 30 wt.%) in aprotic solvents such as N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone (NMP). These imide oligomers also showed a very low viscosity. These data were accomplished by preventing the aggregation caused by the pendant phenyl group of p-ODA. The imide oligomers were successfully converted to cross-linked structures after curing at 370 C. The glass transition temperature and elongation at break (epsilonb) of the cured imide resin were found to be very high (almost 360 C and >15%) respectively.

The solid-state 13C NMR spectral data on 13C-labeled end-caps in the PE-3F-SPI-3 oligomide provide evidence for the ethynyl to ethynyl and ethylene oxide sulfonate ester dual crosslinked structure. Infrared spectroscopy of model compounds also provides evidence for the presence of crosslinked sulfonate ester and appended sulfonate ester side chains. 13C NMR also provided quantitative data on the extent of the ethynyl to ethynyl crosslinking reaction and sulfonate ester crosslinks and side chains.

Unsatisfied dielectric property and insufficient thermal stability are major obstacles for the commercialization of polyimide resins in the future ultralarge scale integration (ULSI) or radar-wave-transparent composite applications. The incorporation of ortho-hydroxy diamine into a common phenylethynyl terminated oligoimides, aiming to subsequently form additional rigid benzoxazole units by the thermal rearrangement (TR), were prepared. The effects of TR-able codiamine on the processing ability of oligoimides, molecular packing and properties, including thermal stability, dielectric property and bonding ability to reinforcing fibers, for the resulting poly(imide-co-benzoxazole) (PI-co-PBOs) resins have been examined in detail. These thermally rearranged PI-co-PBO resins exhibit reduced dielectric constants of 2.56?3.4 at f = 0.1 GHz, lower than the cured PI with a dielectric constant of 3.55. Meanwhile, the 5 wt% weight loss temperature (Td5) of the resultant resins increases from 455 C for the cured PI to 491 C for the PI-co-PBO-60 containing 60 mol% benzoxazole unit, and correspondingly, the tensile modulus of PI-co-PBO-60 reaches 2.47 GPa, which is 76% higher than that of the cured PI. These resultant PI-co-PBOs exhibit the combined excellent properties, indicating them a great potentials as the new low-dielectric constant polymer resins in microelectronic industries or advanced composites.

Synthesis and study of the properties of thermoset oligoimides with propargyl fragment

A series of thermoplastic oligoimides with a propargyl substituent in the side chain was synthesized by the method of high-Temperature catalytic copolycondensation in the melt of benzoic acid based on the monomer 5-(2-propyn-1-yloxy) benzene-1,3-diamine (PBD), 2,2-bis-[(3,4-di-carboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride (BPADA), 2,2-bis-[(4-Aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane (BAPP) and phthalic anhydride (PA). The uncured imide oligomers showed good solubility (>20 wt% in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone), wide temperature processing window (>50C) and also flow well at 220C. These imide oligomers were successfully converted to cross-linked structures after curing at 300C. Cross-linked oligomers have a temperature of 5% weight loss >500C and Tg >200C.
