First, the low-viscosity carborane-containing imide oligomers are synthesized using newly designed 1-(3-amino-4-tolyl)-2-(4-aminophenyl)-o-carborane and aromatic dianhydride as monomers, 4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride as the end-capping reagent. Followed by thermal curing, the resulting polyimides show high Tg (?500 C) and above 92.1% char yield at 800 C both in nitrogen and air atmosphere due to the incorporation of the bulky carborane cages. Aging studies, performed at 400 and 500 C for 5 h in air on a carborane-containing polyimide and a carborane-free polyimide, show that the polyimide with carborane groups possesses excellent thermo-oxidative stability. Moreover, the novel polyimides exhibit constant and relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion values over a wide range of temperature, indicative of a remarkable dimensional stability. Thus, this study clearly demonstrates the viability of the incorporation of carborane cages to access polyimide thermosets with ultrahigh Tg and thermo-oxidative stability.

Herein, starting from synthesizing phenylethynyl end-capped all-aromatic liquid crystalline polyester with good processability, a new kind of flame retarding liquid crystalline thermosetting foam (LCTF) was fabricated without adding additional flame retardant and foaming agent. LCTF simultaneously shows outstanding flame retardancy (UL94?V0 grade, 36.4% of limit oxygen index), excellent smoke suppression and high thermal stability, which are the best values reported so far among intrinsic flame retarding foams. The mechanism of outstanding flame retardancy is revealed by investigating chemical and morphological structures with the aid of three-dimensional reconstruction of morphology. Roles from gas phase and condensed phase are proved to be responsible for unique flame retardancy. The application of LCTF in thermal insulation was also evaluated.

The carbon fiber-reinforced composite T800/PI-s1-15 displayed excellent high-temperature performance, which gave the flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of 703 and 33 MPa, respectively, when tested at the temperature as high as 450C.

Changing the spacer group from propyl to phenyl causes an increase in the melting transition temperature along with a higher heat of fusion at melting; however, the more rigid phenyl spacer enables the PEPI-POSS to form a higher degree of crystallinity upon cooling. The more rigid phenyl spacer also initiates the polyene reactions at lower temperatures. For POSS with PEPI attached to either side of the cage, there are two isomers with respect to the SiO1.5 core. This mixture of two isomers inhibits the formation of crystallinity as compared with the “pendent” derivative where both PEPI groups come off from the same corner of POSS cage. Finally, it was found that these PEPI-POSS molecules have reaction kinetics and onset temperatures on par with organic hexafluorophenylethynyl oligoimides, which make these PEPI-POSS molecules excellent candidates as nanocomposite additives in high performance composite applications.
