A mild and efficient protocol for the synthesis of 7,8-dihydro-10-aryl-5H- indeno[1,2-b]quinoline-9,11-diones via a one-pot four component condensation of aromatic aldehydes, dimedone, 1,3-indandione and ammonium acetate using melamine trisulfonic acid as a catalyst in ethanol is described. The catalyst could be recycled and reused three times without significant loss of activity. Dihydro-5H-indeno[1,2-b]quinolines with stabilized zwitterionic resonance structures showed feasible application as new pH indicators. These chemosensors have a large wavelength shift (100 nm) and showed excellent sensitivity in the range of pH from 9.2 to 12.

Objective: Bisphosphonates (BPs) have been widely used in the treatment of bone disorders due to their ability to modulate bone turnover. The biological mechanisms through BFs exert their effects on osteoclasts are well established. However, the role of BFs on the osteoblasts is controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of risedronate on osteoblastic cells. Design: MC3TE-E1 cells were exposed to risedronate at 0, 10-8, 10-6, 10-4, and 10-3 M. The following parameters were assayed: (1) cell proliferation by hemocytometer counting after 24, 48 and 72 h, (2) cell viability by MTT assay after 24, 48 and 72 h, (3) Type I Collagen quantification by ELISA after 24, 48 and 72 h, (3) alkaline phosphatase activity after 7 and 10 days and (4) matrix mineralization after 14 days. Results: After 24 h, risedronate did not affect both cell proliferation and viability (p > 0.05). However, after 48 and 72 h, a decrease in cell proliferation and viability was detected in osteoblastic cultures exposed to risedronate at 10-4 and 10-3 M (p < 0.05). After 48 and 72 h, Type I Collagen synthesis was stimulated by risedronate at 10-4 M (p < 0.05). High levels of ALP activity were detected in cultures exposed to risedronate at 10-4 M after 7 and 10 days (p < 0.05). After 14 day, high calcium content was observed in cultures exposed to risedronate at 10-4 M (p > 0.05). Conclusion: These results indicated that risedronate can promote osteoblast differentiation.

Stimulus-responsive surfactant-encapsulated phosphotungstate clusters (SECs) were fabricated and deposited onto octadecyltrichlorosilane-coated glass. A copper TEM grid filled with LCs was placed on the substrate to construct the LC optical cell. Upon addition of water to the LC interface, the optical appearance of LCs on the glass undergoes a bright-to-dark shift due to an orientational transition of the LCs from a planar to a homeotropic state. However, the LCs display a bright appearance if they are pretreated with an aqueous solution containing urea and urease. This is caused by the disassemby of the SECs from the glass surface due to an increase of the pH value that is induced by the enzymatic hydrolysis of urea by urease. The method is highly sensitive and can detect urease activities as low as 0.03 mU/mL. It can also be applied to the determination of heavy metal ions which exert an inhibitory effect on the activity of urease. For example, Cu(II) can be quantified via urease inhibition in 1 nM concentration.

In order to minimize emission of formaldehyde from urea-formaldehyde resins (UF) and to improve their thermo-oxidative behavior, the effect of low gamma-irradiation on hydrolytic and thermo-oxidative stability of nano-silica modified UF resin, modified UF resin with wood flour (Pinus silvestris L.) as natural filler and modified UF resin with mixture of SiO2/WF fillers were investigated. The hydrolytic stability of modified UF resins was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF resins after acid hydrolysis. The studied modified UF resins have been irradiated (50 kGy) and effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated on the basis of percentage of liberated formaldehyde before and after irradiation. The minimum percentage (1.23%) of liberated formaldehyde and mass loss of a 25.35% were obtained in wood flour modified UF resin after gamma-irradiation which indicate significant improvement in the hydrolytic stability compared to other modified UF resins. The effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated also on the basis of thermo-oxidative behavior of the same modified UF resins before and after irradiation. The thermo-oxidative behavior was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermo-gravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) supported by data from IR spectroscopy. After gamma-irradiation, the shift of DTA peaks a higher temperature indicates that thermo-oxidative stability of modified UF/SiO2/WF is increase.

Calcium based catalysts have been studied as promising heterogeneous catalysts for production of methyl esters via transesterification; however a few were explored on catalyst synthesis with high surface area, less particle size, and Ca leaching analysis. In this work, an active Razor shell CaO with crystalline size of 87.2 nm, SBET of 92.63 m2/g, pore diameters of 37.311 nm, and pore volume of 0.613 cc/g was synthesized by a green technique “calcination-hydro aeration-dehydration.” Spectrographic techniques TGA/DTA, FTIR, SEM, XRD, BET&BJH, and PSA were employed for characterization and surface morphology of CaO. Two-step transesterification of Jatropha curcas oil was performed to evaluate CaO catalytic activity. A five-factor-five-level, two-block, half factorial, central composite design based response surface method was employed for experimental analysis and optimization of Jatropha methyl ester (JME) yield. The regression model adequacy ascertained thru coefficient of determination (R2: 95.81%). A JME yield of 98.80% was noted at C (3.10 wt.%), M (54.24 mol./mol.%), T (127.87 min), H (51.31C), and R (612 rpm). The amount of Ca leached to JME during 1st and 4th reuse cycles was 1.43 ppm ± 0.11 and 4.25 ppm ± 0.21, respectively. Higher leaching of Ca, 6.67 ppm ± 1.09, was found from the 5th reuse cycle due to higher dispersion of Ca2+; consequently JME yield reduces to 76.40%. The JME fuel properties were studied according to biodiesel standards EN 14214 and comply to use as green biodiesel.

However, very often, undergraduate students have problems to correctly interpret the colours of the different species of an indicator (its acidic and alkaline forms) and colour changes during titration. Frequent questions are of the type: ?Is it still blue, or is it already red?? The aim of the present text is to show how carefully a suitable colour indicator has to be chosen, and what colour changes happen at the inflection point of a titration. Typical acid?base titrations like the alkalimetry of hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, oxalic acid, and the acidimetry of borax at two concentration levels using eleven common colour indicators are compared with potentiometric end point determination. Photographs were taken of solutions containing the indicators during the course of titration, i.e., at different pH values. These photographs were used to prepare a colour map for each indicator. Such colour maps are very helpful to find the most suitable indicator for a certain reaction, and also to estimate the maximum accuracy.

Electrochromic windows have attracted increasing attention, particularly for smart and energy-saving buildings. The electrodes in pseudocapacitors produce and consume OH? ions in electrolyte associated with the chare/discharge cycles. By tuning alkalinity of the electrolyte using pseudocapacitive reactions of nanoflake cobaltosic oxide (Co3O4) electrode, we demonstrated reversible electrochemical coloring in red, blue, yellow, reddish orange, violet, green and dark blue, with the combination of cells containing phenolphthalein, thymolphthalein and 3-nitrophenol in electrolyte. This work introduces a new electrochromic mechanism based on electrolyte color changes controlled by nanostructured pseudocapacitors, which can fill the color palette.

Peat belongs to the slowly renewable biomass resources, therefore its use as an energy source helps to reduce the negative impact on the environment. However, its use in the energy sector is gradually decreasing due to high operating costs because of the characteristics of peat. The aim of this work is a comprehensive study of the peat characteristics and the development of recommendations for its effective use. In this paper, we consider the widespread methods for studying fuel (thermo-technical and fusibility characteristics determination, X-ray fluorescence and phase methods), as well as the original approach of separation by sedimentation in liquids of various densities. The peat separation by sedimentation in liquids of various densities made it possible to obtain a low-ash peat fraction comparable in characteristics to brown coals and a highly mineralized fraction (heavy fraction). On the example of grain processing waste, it is shown that the addition of a 5% of heavy peat fraction to bran prevents the formation of strong slag deposits and can be recommended for co-burning. This allows us to consider the separation by sedimentation in liquids of various densities as an effective tool for using highly mineralized types of biomass in energetic sector.

Abstract: In this study, cloud point extraction?scanometry as a new, simple and inexpensive method was developed for the separation, preconcentration and determination of trace amounts of brilliant green (BG) and basic fuchsin (BF) in mixture. The method is based on the extraction of analytes simultaneously from aqueous solution using a non-ionic surfactant Triton X-114 as a cloud point extractor. After phase separation, the surfactant-rich phase was diluted with ethanol, digital image of the solution taken with a flatbed scanner and RGB parameters of the enriched analytes were calculated by special software written in visual basic (VB 6). The influence of analytical parameters including pH of system, the concentration of the surfactant, equilibration temperature and time were optimized. The method was linear in the concentration ranges of 0.025?1.00 and 0.05?2.50 mg/L with limits of detection of 0.008 and 0.019 mg/L for BG and BF, respectively. The preconcentration factors were 29 for BG and 28 for BF. The enrichment factors were found to be 34 and 16, precision (RSD, %) of the method, 1.9 and 1.3% for BG and BF, respectively. The effects of interfering ions and dyes were investigated. Finally, the proposed method was applied for the determination of BG and BF in real water samples with satisfactory results.
