Of the plural arene rings in the indicators, a specific arene ring can be successfully coordinated to the metal center in a selective manner under appropriate conditions (i.e. use of the precursors of different oxidation states and reaction with the non-protonated and protonated pH indicator). The obtained indicator complexes show halochromic behavior depending on pH as observed for the parent molecules but the transition pH ranges are shifted to the more acidic side because of the attachment of the electron-withdrawing metal fragments, which decrease the basicity of the attached pH indicators.

Peat belongs to the slowly renewable biomass resources, therefore its use as an energy source helps to reduce the negative impact on the environment. The aim of this work is a comprehensive study of the peat characteristics and the development of recommendations for its effective use. In this paper, we consider the widespread methods for studying fuel (thermo-technical and fusibility characteristics determination, X-ray fluorescence and phase methods), as well as the original approach of separation by sedimentation in liquids of various densities. The peat separation by sedimentation in liquids of various densities made it possible to obtain a low-ash peat fraction comparable in characteristics to brown coals and a highly mineralized fraction (heavy fraction). On the example of grain processing waste, it is shown that the addition of a 5% of heavy peat fraction to bran prevents the formation of strong slag deposits and can be recommended for co-burning. This allows us to consider the separation by sedimentation in liquids of various densities as an effective tool for using highly mineralized types of biomass in energetic sector.

Abstract: In this study, cloud point extraction?scanometry as a new, simple and inexpensive method was developed for the separation, preconcentration and determination of trace amounts of brilliant green (BG) and basic fuchsin (BF) in mixture. The method is based on the extraction of analytes simultaneously from aqueous solution using a non-ionic surfactant Triton X-114 as a cloud point extractor. After phase separation, the surfactant-rich phase was diluted with ethanol, digital image of the solution taken with a flatbed scanner and RGB parameters of the enriched analytes were calculated by special software written in visual basic (VB 6). The influence of analytical parameters including pH of system, the concentration of the surfactant, equilibration temperature and time were optimized. The method was linear in the concentration ranges of 0.025?1.00 and 0.05?2.50 mg/L with limits of detection of 0.008 and 0.019 mg/L for BG and BF, respectively. The preconcentration factors were 29 for BG and 28 for BF. The enrichment factors were found to be 34 and 16, precision (RSD, %) of the method, 1.9 and 1.3% for BG and BF, respectively. The effects of interfering ions and dyes were investigated. Finally, the proposed method was applied for the determination of BG and BF in real water samples with satisfactory results.

The advancing meniscus of a capillary-driven fluid accelerates and decelerates as it comes into contact with the regions of disparate surface energy creating a ‘weaving’ trajectory across the virtual microchannel resulting in horizontal and vertical lamination. The efficacy of this technique was demonstrated utilizing image analysis and Shannon entropy. Additionally, a neutralization reaction exhibited the ability of hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions to efficiently homogenize and facilitate on-chip reactions in spite of the absence of traditional micromixing strategies. Such results suggest that this inexpensive and autonomous micromixing technique may effectively support reaction processes for portable sensor applications.

Loading CaO onto spherically-shaped gamma-Al2O3 support was applied for the preparation of a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production. Physico-chemical, textural and morphological characterization was performed using optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES), Hg-porosimetry, N2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRPD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) and Hammett indicators. The effects of catalyst preparation conditions (different precursor salts and calcination temperatures) on the catalyst activity, and the reaction conditions (methanol-to-oil molar ratio and catalyst loading) on the reaction rate and esters yield were studied. In addition, catalyst stability was investigated. The most active catalyst was derived from the nitrate precursor after calcination at 475 C (inert atmosphere). Under mild reaction conditions (60 C, 5 h, 900 rpm, methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 12:1 and catalyst loading (CaO wt% to the oil) of 0.5%), the equilibrium ester content of 94.3% was obtained in the methanolysis of sunflower oil in a batch reactor. The catalyst remained sufficiently active in two consecutive cycles without any pretreatment. Mechanical erosion caused by stirring and massive deposition of organic molecules from the reaction mixture caused the decrease of catalytic activity while CaO leaching was negligible.

We present an environmentally friendly, efficient, simple heterogeneous transesterification process combining palm oil, soybean oil, rice bran oil, and waste cooking oil with methanol to make a biodiesel and glycerol by-product using calcined waste coral fragments in solid form as a catalyst. Under optimum reaction conditions, the coral fragments calcined at 700C for 1 h; catalyst/oil ratio of 100 wt.%; methanol/oil molar ratio of 15:1; reaction temperature of 65C with a constant stirring are able to transesterify oils to a biodiesel product with a FAME yield over 98% in 2 h. The catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture by pouring off the reaction solution and can be reused several times with consistent results. Biodiesel and glycerol products without any treatment and cleansing show a high quality product in which fuel properties of the biodiesel meet all EN 14214 standards for bio-auto fuels.

Shaped-stabilized reversible thermochromic phase change materials of (TBC-LB, TBB-LB) were assembled by impregnation the TBC (crystal violet lactone/bisphenol A/tetradecanol) or TBB (3,3?-Bis (1-n-octyl-2-methylindol-3-yl) phthalide/bisphenol A/tetradecanol) into lignin-retained bamboo (LB) for energy storage. Analysis of the chemical structure of lignin-retained wood showed that the removal of part of lignin from the bamboo contributes to the penetration of the compound, and the partial retention of lignin is advantageous for maintaining high mechanical properties. The SEM micrographs of TBC-LB and TBB-LB indicate that TBC and TBB are well immersed into the porous LB. The TBC-LB showed an endothermic peak at 40.8C with DeltaHm of 113.3 J g?1 and two exothermic peaks at 28.8C and 21.9C with DeltaHL+S of 110.2 J g?1, and the value is basically equal to the pure TBC compound, indicating that TBC has been fully immersed in LB to form a composite phase change material. For phase change latent heat and melting-cooling temperature, TBB-LB and TBC-LB showed the same trend. About 100 heating-cooling cycles were performed to evaluate the reliability of TBC-LB and TBB-LB, showing excellent cycle stability. It is foreseen that the prepared shape-stable TBC-LB and TBB-LB have great potential for applying insulation systems in reversible thermochromic phase change energy storage.
