These bioinspired artificial swimmers are capable of color changing in response to a variety of environmental stimuli such as temperature, pH, and light. By multiplexing different stimuli-responsive materials on a single swimmer, a vast library of independently addressable colors can be achieved. Unlike other color-changing robots, our color-changing swimmers can move autonomously in solution and are decoupled from tethered supports. The utilized leuco dyes, pH indicators, and phosphorescent powders display excellent reversibility and prolonged color retention. Finally, we design camouflage patterns which render the swimmers invisible against virtually any background, while revealing the swimmer upon changing the environmental conditions. By mimicking animal camouflage strategies these artificial swimmers present a significant step toward realizing multienvironmental stimuli-responsive color-changing strategies for the next generation of smart robotics. Such capabilities can be further enhanced by coupling color-changing ability with stimuli-triggered speed or shape change.

This paper presents the prediction of remaining service life of the land concrete as distinguished from the marine concrete. This study assumes that the land concrete is deteriorated by following three cases: carbonation, using sea sand and using deicing salts. In case of carbonation deterioration, statistical analysis and the depth of carbonation front are considered. This depth is assessed about 3.6-8.3 mm and can give more exact prediction than just carbonation depth by phenolphthalein. In case of using sea sand, various specimens considering chloride contents, carbonation accelerating, cover depth, relative humidity and water cement ratio are measured by linear polarization resistance method and half-cell potential method during the 1 year. And measurements of the real steel loss give the conversion ratio of polarization resistance and corrosion rate; consequently, their results make the prediction equation of rust growth during any specified period. In case of using deicing salts, surface chloride contents that change with time are focused. The proposed methods are considered to be useful for prediction of remaining service life of the land concrete by steel corrosion.

The traditional manufacturing process of 1,3-dioxolane requires high investment and energy consumption. A reactive distillation with pressure-swing distillation process is proposed as an attractive candidate based on the process simulation results in this work. To simulate the reactive distillation process, the kinetics experiments of formaldehyde aldolization with ethylene glycol were performed over NKC-9 cationic-exchange resin catalyst at 353-368 K. Byproducts were observed, and the batch distillation experiment were carried out to determine the boiling point temperatures ranking. A calculation strategy of aqueous and ethanediolic formaldehyde solutions was developed to solve the vapor-liquid equilibrium. The sensitivity analysis result shows that the yield of 1,3-dioxolane could be improved to 0.995 in the reactive distillation column, and high-purity 1,3-dioxolane (99.9 wt %) can be obtained in the following pressure-swing distillation process. The research achievements provides a new 1,3-dioxolane production process, which has an advantage in equipment integration.

The current work describes the investigation of film and gel samples, which combine poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and gelatin containing thymolphthalein dye (TP). Under the effect of gamma radiation, two different media prepared as a label film and gel dosimeter its color changed from blue to colorless. Results demonstrated that the new detector systems for application in the low and high dose ranges were from 1 to 6.5 kGy in case of film and from 0.5 to 100 Gy as gel. The response of these dosimeters shows excellent post-irradiation stability at different storage time. These dosimeters are independent of the relative humidity at the time of irradiation in the range of relative humidity from 0 to 60%. Uncertainty of this radiation dosimeter was calculated as well as a comparison between two radiation dosimetry systems and suggest their possible application for both low and high dose dosimetry applications in medicine and industry.

In the study, 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone were added to the thermochromic systems to investigate UV resistance of the colorants in the systems. The effect of the UV absorbers on UV resistance of the thermochromic systems was investigated by color measurements based on CIELab system after UV aging of the nanoencapsulated systems. The results proved that especially 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone was an effective material for increasing UV resistance of the systems and had color developer property. Besides, both thermochromic systems and their nanoencapsulated derivatives exhibited thermal energy storage/releasing property. While thermochromic systems had a heat storage capacity of over 200 J/g, the heat storage capacity of their nanocapsulated derivatives had reached up to 180 J/g. Melting temperature of the solvent n-tetradecanol decreased slightly in the thermochromic systems and further in nanoencapsulated form due to the cryoscopic effect of the non-volatile solutes in the system.

Two compounds, Acinetobacter baumannii efflux pump inhibitor 1 (ABEPI1) [(E)-4-((4-chlorobenzylidene)amino)benezenesulfonamide] and ABEPI2 [N-tert-butyl-2-(1-tert-butyltetrazol-5-yl) sulfanylacetamide], were shown to lead to minocycline accumulation within A. baumannii during serum growth and inhibit the efflux potential of the organism. While both compounds also inhibited the antibiotic efflux properties of the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, they did not display significant cytotoxicity toward human cells or mammalian Ca2+ channel inhibitory effects, suggesting that ABEPI1 and ABEPI2 represent promising structural scaffolds for the development of new classes of bacterial antibiotic efflux pump inhibitors that can be used to potentiate the activities of current and future antibiotics for the therapeutic intervention of Gram-negative bacterial infections.

An enzyme-free titer plate-based colorimetric assay utilizing functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) entrapping pH-indicator molecules has been developed. The entrapped thymolphthalein molecules can be readily released from the pores with a simple addition of alkaline solution. The resultant bifunctional MSNs were used for signal-amplified detection of PSA captured by the primary antibody preimmobilized in the wells of a plate. Our method possesses a wide dynamic range (0.5 to 8000 pg/mL) wherein the adsorption of the bifunctional MSNs obeys a modified Langmuir isotherm. A detection limit (LOD) down to as low as 0.36 pg/mL can be attained. Owing to the size uniformity of the MSNs and the obviation of enzyme molecules employed in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), excellent reproducibility (RSD = 1.12%) was achieved. The selective detection of PSA in human serum samples demonstrates the amenability of our method to detect important biomarkers in complex biological samples, whereas the performance of the assay in a titer plate ensures high throughput and obviates the use of expensive instruments. Both of these features are prerequisites for clinical settings wherein a great number of samples need to be analyzed in a timely fashion.
