This review describes the huge impact of phthalein dyes on multiple industries. Although phthalein dyes demonstrate several vital applications, there appears to be no review in the literature. In the present work, capability of thymolphthalein-grafted graphene oxide, which was successfully synthesized in this study, in stabilization of polypropylene against thermal oxidation were investigated and compared with that of SONGNOX 1010, a commercially used phenolic antioxidant for the polymer. The modified graphene oxide were incorporated into polypropylene via melt mixing. State of distribution of the nanoplatelets in the polymer matrix was examined using scanning electron microscopy and was shown to be homogeneous. Measurements of oxidation onset temperature and oxidative induction time revealed that thymolphthalein-grafted graphene oxide modifies thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer in the melt state remarkably. However, the efficiency of the nanoplatelets in stabilization of polypropylene against thermal oxidation in melt state was shown to be inferior to that of SONGNOX 1010. Furthermore, oven ageing experiments followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the modified graphene oxide improves thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer strongly in the solid state, so that its stabilization efficiency is comparable to that of SONGNOX 1010.

Summary: Although students initially learn of ionic buffering in basic chemistry, buffering and acid-base transport in biology often is relegated to specialized classes, discussions, or situations. That said, for physiology, nephrology, pulmonology, and anesthesiology, these basic principles often are critically important for mechanistic understanding, medical treatments, and assessing therapy effectiveness. This short introductory perspective focuses on basic chemistry and transport of buffers and acid-base equivalents, provides an outline of basic science acid-base concepts, tools used to monitor intracellular pH, model cellular responses to pH buffer changes, and the more recent development and use of genetically encoded pH-indicators. Examples of newer genetically encoded pH-indicators (pHerry and pHire) are provided, and their use for in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo experiments are described. The continued use and development of these basic tools provide increasing opportunities for both basic and potentially clinical investigations.

A new method for the separation enrichment of trace Zn2+ using microcrystalline thymolphthalein as an adsorbent was established. The separation enrichment behaviour of Zn2+ and the conditions for the separation quantitatively of Zn2+ with other metal ions were investigated. The possible separation enrichment mechanism of Zn2+ was discussed in detail. The results showed that by controlling pH 10.0, in KBr-diacetydioxime(DMG)-thymolphthalein(TP) system, chelate settlement of Zn(DMG)2 which formed by Zn2+ and DMG was quantitatively adsorbed on the surface of microcrystalline thymolphthalein,and the liquid-solid phases were formed with clear interface, while Cu2+, Bi3+, Al3+, Hg2+ could not be adsorbed. The quantitative separation of Zn2+ from those metal ions was achieved. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the quantitative separation of trace Zn2+ in synthetic water samples with enrichment yield of 93.5%?99.3%.

Roasted and cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil obtained from pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo, L.) from the 2010/2011 to 2012/2013 crop seasons were analyzed to determine the basic quality parameters (free fatty acids and peroxide value) as well as content of cis and trans fatty acids. Free fatty acids and peroxide values were within the legal limits in all except one of the roasted samples and were influenced by climate conditions of a particular crop season, while the significance of influences due to processing conditions was not determined. Gas chromatography revealed a total of 12 cis and 3 trans fatty acids in pumpkin seed oil. The dominant fatty acids in all seed oil samples were linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic (98.8. ±. 0.18%). Their content was significantly affected by the crop season and processing. Higher amounts of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were noted in oil from a crop season with higher air temperature and in cold-pressed oil. All pumpkin seed oil contained palmitoleic fatty acid (0.10-0.14%) which is listed as “not detected” in the authenticity requirements for pumpkin seed oil in regulations of various EU countries. The content of trans fatty acids was significantly higher in roasted seed oil (0.03%-0.39%) than in cold-pressed oil (0.03%-0.05%).

Practical yields of biogas from the anaerobic digestion of macroalgae and, Sargassum muticum in particular, are substantially below the theoretical maximum. There is considerable conjecture about the reasons for the relatively low practical methane yields from seaweed, and polyphenols are suggested as one of the elements in the low yield of methane from brown seaweeds. However, there appears to be little information on the effect of specific phenolics on defined substrates. This paper examines the effect of some simple phenolic compounds, representative of those reported in S. muticum on methane production from a range of model substrates. Three simple phenolics were selected, gallic acid, epicatechin and phloroglucinol; at four addition levels, 0, 0.5, 3.5 and 7.5% w/w of substrate; for four substrates, a readily digested simple organic substance, glycerol, and three polymers found in seaweed, cellulose, alginic acid and the sodium salt of alginic acid. Alginic acid and its sodium salt were found to be recalcitrant with average methane yields of equivalent to only 23?28% of their theoretical methane potential. Methane yield was further reduced by the presence of high concentrations (7% of substrate equivalent to 17.5 mg L?1) of phloroglucinol and epicatechin. None of the phenolic compounds studied appeared to inhibit the breakdown of the simple and readily digested compound, glycerol. Low methane yield in seaweed may be due to the recalcitrance of complex hydrocolloids and phenolic inhibition of the breakdown of more complex molecules in the initial hydrolysis stage of anaerobic digestion, but further research is required.

This review presents the state-of-the-art of optical sensors for determination of biogenic amines (BAs) in food by publications covering about the last 10 years. Interest in the development of rapid and preferably on-site methods for quantification of BAs is based on their important role in implementation and regulation of various physiological processes. At the same time, BAs can develop in different kinds of food by fermentation processes or microbial activity or arise due to contamination, which induces toxicological risks and food poisoning and causes serious health issues. Therefore, various optical chemosensor systems have been devised that are easy to assemble and fast responding and low-cost analytical tools. If amenable to on-site analysis, they are an attractive alternative to existing instrumental analytical methods used for BA determination in food. Hence, also portable sensor systems or dipstick sensors are described based on various probes that typically enable signal readouts such as photometry, reflectometry, luminescence, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, or ellipsometry. The quantification of BAs in real food samples and the design of the sensors are highlighted and the analytical figures of merit are compared. Future instrumental trends for BA sensing point to the use of cell phone?based fully automated optical evaluation and devices that could even comprise microfluidic micro total analysis systems.

Nowadays, urged by the high demand to reduce paper consumption, rewritable paper receives more and more attention. However, it is a great challenge to conveniently fabricate the rewritable paper which has long legible time of information and is easy to use simultaneously. Here, we report a new type of long-lasting rewritable paper based on color-memorizing thermochromic dye and photothermal-converting toner, which is fabricated by a two-step printing process. The rewritable paper demonstrates excellent rewriting performances (legible time > 6 months and reversibility > 100 times). The thermochromic effect is based on a temperature-driven phase change mechanism, accompanied by a lactone ring tautomerism of crystal violet lactone. The color of the rewritable paper rapidly changes from blue to colorlessness when the temperature is higher than 65 C, and the colorless state can be maintained at room temperature. The color returns to blue when the temperature is lower than -10 C. By using an electrothermal pen, a thermal printer, and near infrared (NIR) light, characters and images with high resolution can be handwritten, thermal-printed, and photoprinted on the rewritable paper. The written/printed information can be cleaned under lower temperature or can be quickly erased by NIR light. This rewritable paper is easy for large-scale production and will have promising opportunities in practical applications, such as long-lasting information recording and reading, rewritable label, reprintable displays, and so on.
