Biohydrogen production potential (BHP) depends on several factors like inoculum source, substrate, pH, among many others. Batch assays are the most common strategy to evaluate such parameters, where the comparison is a challenging task due to the different procedures used. The present method introduces the first internationally validated protocol, evaluated by 8 independent laboratories from 5 different countries, to assess the biohydrogen potential. As quality criteria, a coefficient of variation of the cumulative hydrogen production (Hmax) was defined to be <15 %. Two options to run BHP batch tests were proposed; a manual protocol with periodic measurements of biogas production, needing conventional laboratory materials and analytical equipment for biogas characterization; and an automatic protocol, which is run in a device developed for online measurements of low biogas production. The detailed procedures for both protocol options are presented, as well as data validating them. The validation showed acceptable repeatability and reproducibility, measured as intra- and inter-laboratory coefficient of variation, which can be reduced up to 9 %. Biomaterials may be useful in filling lost bone portions in order to restore balance and improve bone regeneration. The objective of this study was to produce polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes combined with two types of bioglass (Sol?Gel and melt-quenched) and determine their physical and biological properties. Membranes were produced through electrospinning. This study presented three experimental groups: pure PCL membranes, PCL-Melt-Bioglass and PCL-Sol-gel-Bioglass. Membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry (FTIR), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy and Zeta Potential. The following in vitro tests were performed: MTT assay, alkaline phosphatase activity, total protein content and mineralization nodules. Twenty-four male rats were used to observe biological performance through radiographic, fracture energy, histological and histomorphometric analyses. The physical and chemical analysis results showed success in manufacturing bioactive membranes which significantly enhanced cell viability and osteoblast differentiation. The new formed bone from the in vivo experiment was similar to that observed in the control group. In conclusion, the electrospinning enabled preparing PCL membranes with bioglass incorporated into the structure and onto the surface of PCL fibers. The microstructure of the PCL membranes was influenced by the bioglass production method. Both bioglasses seem to be promising biomaterials to improve bone tissue regeneration when incorporated into PCL. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

The present work aimed to evaluate capability of a new molecular structure to stabilize polyethylene against thermal oxidation. Hence, effects of 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-propane-2-ylphenyl)-2-benzofuran-1-one (thymolphthalein) on the thermo-oxidative stability of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in both solid and melt states were investigated and compared with those of SONGNOX 1010, a commercially used phenolic antioxidant for the polymer. Oven aging experiments at 90 C followed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed that thymolphthalein at concentrations of 0.1-1.0 wt% improves thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer strongly in the solid state so that its stabilization efficiency is comparable to that of SONGNOX 1010. Furthermore, measurements of Oxidation Onset Temperature (OOT) and Oxidative Induction Time (OIT) of the polymer samples revealed that thymolphthalein modifies thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer in the melt state remarkably. So that, an increase in OOT value of the polymer as large as 36 ?C was obtained by addition of 0.1 wt% of thymolphthalein. It was also confirmed that thymolphthalein does not interfere with the stabilization action of the phenolic antioxidant in the polymer neither in the melt or in the solid state. Finally, a mechanism for the stabilization action of thymolphthalein in the polymer was proposed.

The use of electrochemical hydrogen removal (EHR) together with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) was demonstrated for the first time using a continuous hydrogen producing fermenter. CDR alone was found to increase hydrogen yields from 0.07 mol H2 molhexose to 0.72 mol H2 molhexose. When CDR was combined with EHR, hydrogen yields increased further to 1.79 mol H2 molhexose. The pattern of carbohydrate utilisation and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production are consistent with the hypothesis that increased yields are the result of relieving end product inhibition and inhibition of microbial hydrogen consumption. In situ removal of hydrogen and carbon dioxide as demonstrated here not only increase hydrogen yield but also produces a relatively pure product gas and unlike other approaches can be used to enhance conventional, mesophilic, CSTR type fermentation of low grade/high solids biomass.

Monocationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr), cetyldimethyl(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium bromide (CHDABr), and dicationic (gemini) surfactants, alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dimethyltetradecylammonium bromides) (14-s-14, where s = 2, 4, 6) were studied in the solubilization of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) anthracene, naphthalene, and organic dye alizarin. In an acetonitrile solution, the extents of ionization of trityl halides (Ph3CX: X = Cl, Br) in the presence of various concentrations of alkali metal (M+ =Li+, Na+) and alkaline-earth metal (M2+ = Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+) perchlorates were examined by spectrophotometry. The promoted formation of the trityl ion (Ph+C-) in the presence of metal ions was attributed to “chemical” interactions, such as coordination or covalent bonding between the halide ions and M- or M2+ ions, and not merely the electrostatic interaction. The salt effects increased with methoxy-substituents on trityl chloride as non-substituted < 4-methoxy < 4,4?-dimethoxy< <4,4?,4?-trimethoxytrityl. At higher RX (or X-) concentrations, not only "coordination", but also precipitation reactions between X and M+ or M2+ (except for Li- and Mg2+) seemed to promote the ionization of RX. In the co-presence of a small amount of CH3SO3H, trityl benzoate gave the Ph3C- ion upon the addition of LiClO4 or Mg(ClO4)2. A red color with strong fluorescence due to the zwitterion (R+COO-) of Rhodamine (Rhodamine B base) was observed upon the addition of M+ and M2+, which should have been caused by an interaction between the metal ions and the intramolecule carboxylate (from the gamma-lactone) of Rhodamine in the solution. The gamma-lactone ring of Crystal Violet lactone in acetonitrile was cleaved by the addition of Mg(ClO4)3 to give a strong violet color, whereas, LiClO4, NaClO4, or Ba(ClO4)2 had no (or very small) effects in the solution. It was found that the interactions between X- or RCOO- and M2+ or M- in cetonitrile were strong enough to promote the ionization of partly ionized ciovalent bonds. Do you like my blog? Colorimetric detection has been widely applied in daily life. However, on the other hand, the further development of colorimetric biosensors has been constrained by the lack of multiple detection capabilities. In this work, we proposed a pH-resolved colorimetric biosensor for the first time for the simultaneous detection of four targets, including ochratoxin A (OTA), aflatoxins B1 (AFB1), fumonisin B1 (FB1), and microcystin-LR (MC-LR). With allochroic dyes as the signal indicators, pH value was introduced as the new dimension to control the release of dyes. The concentrations of four targets can be obtained in order by adjusting the pH of the solution. Meanwhile, tedious and high-cost chemical modification processes in the fabrications of biosensors were also avoided by the combination of DNA-directed self-assembly of graphene oxide and magnetic separation. This biosensor provided a simple, rapid, accurate, and low-cost strategy for multiple target detection.
