Hydrothermal liquefaction of cornelian cherry stones, fruit processing wastes, was performed at 200, 250 and 300C with residence times of 0, 15, and 30min. The highest total bio-oil yield was obtained at both 250 and 300C for the shortest residence time (0min) and found to be 28wt.%.ca. The solid residue yields were reduced as both the hydrothermal liquefaction temperature and the holding time was increased. Within this paper, investigations to convert softwood with four different types of bed materials in the 100 kWth dual fluidized bed steam gasification pilot plant at TU Wien are presented and discussed. The results of ten different experiments were compared. Quartz, olivine and feldspar were mixed with limestone in mass ratios of 100/0, 90/10, 50/50 and 0/100. Limestone was used due to its catalytic activity at high temperatures as CaO and thus enhanced tar, char and water conversion of quartz, olivine and feldspar. The admixture of limestone to quartz, olivine and feldspar shifted the product gas compositions towards higher hydrogen and carbon dioxide and lower carbon monoxide contents. By using 100 wt.-% limestone as bed material a hydrogen content of 47.4 vol.-% could be generated. Additionally, the tar concentrations as well as the tar dew points decreased and especially the heavy tar compounds could be reduced. Already small amounts of limestone (<10 wt.-%) to the bed material mixture influenced tar reduction in a positive way. The low abrasion resistance of limestone resulted in increasing dust contents by increasing its amount. However, this could be balanced by the specific design of the separation system of the advanced pilot plant. In Mediterranean ecosystems, forest fires are a common phenomenon. They involve the transformation of vegetation and litter, leaving charred residues and so influencing the carbon cycle by changing (a) the amounts of soil organic matter and (b) the proportions within it of pools with differing stability. In addition to affecting C cycles, fires also affect the amounts of N within soil organic matter, and its availability. Because of the difficulties associated with solvent-based methods for the investigation of char and other highly stable carbon forms within soil, physical methods based on pyrolysis have several advantages. We have used thermal analysis coupled with on-line analysis of evolved gas species to determine the proportions of soil organic matter of differing stability and the pattern of evolution of gaseous nitrogen-bearing species during heating. Burnt soil clearly has a lower content of labile organic matter than unburnt soil, and nitrogen is closely associated with more stable forms of soil organic matter. Using the decomposition temperatures observed from TG, triple shot pyrolysis-GC/MS shows clear differences between the molecular composition of burnt and unburnt samples. At 340 C, the unburnt soil has a diverse content of polysaccharide-derived and aliphatic compounds, while the burnt soil yields only two furan compounds. At 520 C, alkyl and aromatic compounds are observed, including PAHs from the burnt soil. The 600 C shot is dominated by aromatic compounds, with no differences between burnt and unburnt samples. Taken together, the results of elemental analysis, TG-DSC-QMS and pyrolysis-GC/MS are a very helpful tools in the deciphering of changes in the soil organic matter properties, specifically the main changes observed are (a) to increase the proportion of thermally-stable components, and (b) to increase the proportion of nitrogen relative to C through the development of thermally stable heterocyclic N.

A simple procedure was suggested for the chromatographic analyses of bio-oils from pyrolysis of various feedstock employing different technologies. An acetonitrile solution of each bio-oil was prepared without any extraction or other sample pretreatments. Preliminary thin layer chromatography showed a large number of compounds having a broad range of retention factors (Rfs) among 0-1. Products having a retention factor over 0.9 were mainly detected by GC while some other compounds were only identified by HPLC. GC/MS-FID analysis was used to identify and quantify compounds using peak areas and relative response factors (RRFs). A new equation was proposed to estimate RRFs of compounds identified via their MS spectra when experimental RRFs were not readily available. The novel procedure was employed to characterize bio-oils from pyrolysis of wood of different source or obtained using different pyrolysis procedure. Using this RRF method guaiacol, furfural, butan-2-one, levoglucosan, acetic acid and many other compounds were quantified in bio-oil samples. Different amount of them were found as a function of the type of wood, and pyrolysis conditions adopted. For instance levoglucosan was the main compound using carbon as MW absorber however acetic acid was prevalent when a MW absorber was not employed and both of them were absent in bio-oils from classical heating. The HPLC/MS of bio-oils showed cyclohexancarboxylic acid, 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene and 2,6-dimethylphenol among the main products present in all bio-oils. On the contrary 4-hydroxyacetophenone and (3,4,5-trimethoxy) acetophenone were present in bio-oil from pyrolysis of wood using MW oven and 2,5-furandiylmethanol when a MW oven without any absorber was employed. Cyclohexanone was present in bio-oils obtained with a thermal heating or a MW oven without any absorber.

Wood pellets were pyrolyzed using a microwave oven and different microwave power, apparatus set-up and microwave absorbers (none, Fe, and carbon). Pyrolysis was realized in a short time in the presence of Fe or carbon while it was incomplete if the absorber was not present. Furthermore when the absorber was present the shape of the pellets remained unaltered while if the absorber was not employed pellets were disaggregated. Three fractions were collected from each pyrolysis: a gas, a liquid also called bio-oil and a solid called bio-char. The bio-oil contained two phases and they were quantitatively characterized through a GC/MS-FID procedure using an internal standard according to a previously reported method. HPLC/MS, FTIR and1H NMR spectroscopy were also employed for characterization of these liquids. Cellulose pyrolysis products were present in the upper phase such as water, acetic acid, furans (such as furfural), carbohydrates and their derivatives. Compounds from pyrolysis of lignin such as phenols and veratric acid were present in the bottom phase. The microwave assisted pyrolysis showed the possibility to efficiently convert wood pellets in different products. The main economical important components may be separated and used as chemicals, natural drugs or pesticides, while the remaining components, the solid and the gas may be used for energy production (solid and bio-oil). Solid may be also used for carbon sequestration.

A detailed kinetic mechanism based on elementary steps is used to model the oxidation of low concentration of dibenzofuran in a post-combustion area of municipal waste incinerator. In a first approach, some simplifications are used, polychlorodibenzofuranes are represented by the dibenzofuran molecule and the post-combustion area is modeled by a continuous stirred reactor. The mechanism consists in 213 species involved in 1200 elementary steps and describes the dibenzofuran oxidation. This model has been validated on experimental data of dibenzofuran oxidation realized in a perfectly stirred reactor.The simulations performed show that the reactivity of dibenzofuran strongly decreases when this species is very diluted. The oxidation reaction starts when the radical concentration increases with the temperature or with the reactant concentration through the initiation rate and branching steps. An addition of methane or VOCs, such as toluene, induces an important increasing of radical concentration and promotes the dibenzofuran oxidation.This oversimplified approach brings a new contribution to understand the complex reaction of polychorodibenzofurans oxidation.
