Roasted and cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil obtained from pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo, L.) from the 2010/2011 to 2012/2013 crop seasons were analyzed to determine the basic quality parameters (free fatty acids and peroxide value) as well as content of cis and trans fatty acids. Free fatty acids and peroxide values were within the legal limits in all except one of the roasted samples and were influenced by climate conditions of a particular crop season, while the significance of influences due to processing conditions was not determined. Gas chromatography revealed a total of 12 cis and 3 trans fatty acids in pumpkin seed oil. The dominant fatty acids in all seed oil samples were linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic (98.8. ±. 0.18%). Their content was significantly affected by the crop season and processing. Higher amounts of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were noted in oil from a crop season with higher air temperature and in cold-pressed oil. All pumpkin seed oil contained palmitoleic fatty acid (0.10-0.14%) which is listed as “not detected” in the authenticity requirements for pumpkin seed oil in regulations of various EU countries. The content of trans fatty acids was significantly higher in roasted seed oil (0.03%-0.39%) than in cold-pressed oil (0.03%-0.05%).

Practical yields of biogas from the anaerobic digestion of macroalgae and, Sargassum muticum in particular, are substantially below the theoretical maximum. There is considerable conjecture about the reasons for the relatively low practical methane yields from seaweed, and polyphenols are suggested as one of the elements in the low yield of methane from brown seaweeds. However, there appears to be little information on the effect of specific phenolics on defined substrates. This paper examines the effect of some simple phenolic compounds, representative of those reported in S. muticum on methane production from a range of model substrates. Three simple phenolics were selected, gallic acid, epicatechin and phloroglucinol; at four addition levels, 0, 0.5, 3.5 and 7.5% w/w of substrate; for four substrates, a readily digested simple organic substance, glycerol, and three polymers found in seaweed, cellulose, alginic acid and the sodium salt of alginic acid. Alginic acid and its sodium salt were found to be recalcitrant with average methane yields of equivalent to only 23?28% of their theoretical methane potential. Methane yield was further reduced by the presence of high concentrations (7% of substrate equivalent to 17.5 mg L?1) of phloroglucinol and epicatechin. None of the phenolic compounds studied appeared to inhibit the breakdown of the simple and readily digested compound, glycerol. Low methane yield in seaweed may be due to the recalcitrance of complex hydrocolloids and phenolic inhibition of the breakdown of more complex molecules in the initial hydrolysis stage of anaerobic digestion, but further research is required.

In this present study, phytochemical screening, anti-ulcer assay, anti-diarrhea assay, anti-inflammatory assay, analgesic assay, lipase activity assay, amylase activity assay and the anti-bacterial activity of Eucalyptus camaladulensis Dehnh leaf extracted with methanol and 50% ethanol was analyzed for biological significance. Physical characterization of the non-volatile component revealed the higher yield of 16.92% in 50% ethanol expediting the use of 50% ethanol as a better alternative. Further use of crude extract revealed 33.89% (IC50 = 1.44 mg/ml) of alpha-amylase inhibition by methanol extract and 33.87% (IC50 = 3.21 mg/ml) lipase inhibition by 50% ethanol extract. Furthermore, 44.44% protective ratio towards ulcer was observed with the methanol extract, whereas 54.58% anti-inflammatory activity was shown by the 50% ethanol extract. The effectiveness of the extract was further enhanced by the presence of 62.54% motility and best analgesic property at 180 min of the exposure of the extract orally. The antioxidant activity of crude methanol extract revealed an IC50 value 601.8 mug/ml whereas, ethanol extract showed 1279.58 mug/ml in DPPH assay. Result revealed several health benefits of E. camaldulensis Dehnh leaf.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the indicators of osteogenesis, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of an experimental beta tri-calcium phosphate (experimental beta-TCP) compared with two other bone substitutes: bovine hydroxyapatite (HA) (Bio-Oss Geistlich) and beta tri-calcium phosphate (beta-TCP Bionnovation). The cell viability and genotoxicity were measured by MTT and MNT assay, respectively. The indicators of osteogenesis were analyzed by alkaline phosphatase activity, total protein content, and calcium deposition. The MTT and MNT assay showed that none of the tested materials was cytotoxic nor genotoxic. Concerning the indicators of osteogenesis, it was observed that cells in contact with all the materials were able to induce the osteogenesis and this process was influenced by the period of the cell culture in contact with bone substitutes. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that this experimental beta-TCP appears to be a promising material as a bone substitute.

Acetylated corn starches with different degrees of substitution (DS 0.85, DS 1.78, DS 2.89) were synthesized by the reaction of corn starch with acetic anhydride in the presence of acetic acid under varying reaction temperatures. The product was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, 1H NMR, X-ray diffraction and contact angle measurement. Acid-base titration and 1H NMR methods were employed to determine the degree of substitution of product. FTIR spectroscopic analysis showed that the characteristic absorption intensities of esterified starch increased with increase in the degree of substitution, and the characterized peak of hydroxyl group almost disappeared in the spectrum of DS 2.89 acetylated starch. The detailed chemical microstructure of native starch and acetylated starch was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 13C-1H COSY spectra. Analysis of 1H NMR spectra of acetylated starches was assigned accurately. Strong peaks in X-ray diffraction of acetylated starch revealed that new crystalline regions were formed. Compared with native starch, the hydrophobic performance of acetylated starch esters was increased. The contact angle of acetylated starch with DS 2.89 was 68.2.

A light source?microchannel photodetector in a sandwich structure was designed to realize on-chip detection. Compared with a commercial colorimeter, all key parts are based on MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) technology so that the volume of this on-chip colorimeter can be minimized. Besides, less error and high precision are achieved. The cost of this colorimeter is two orders of magnitude less than that of a commercial one. All these advantages enable a low-cost and high-precision sensing operation in a monitoring network. The colorimeter developed herein has bright prospects for environmental and biological applications.

In steelmaking processes, quicklime is generally used to produce CaO-based slags, and its dissolution rate is important for steel refining. The dissolution rate of quicklime is conventionally measured by the rotating cylinder method using dense and hard lime samples which gives rates that are slower than estimated rates from the actual operation. The authors established a new method to measure the dissolution rate of quicklime by measuring the variation of slag composition and reported that the quicklime used in the actual operation had a much higher dissolving rate than that of completely calcined quicklime. The significant increase of the dissolution rate was caused by gas formation from the quicklime due to the thermal decomposition of residual limestone existing in quicklime. In this study, the dissolution rate of quicklime with the accompanying gas formation is quantitatively investigated by using quicklimes with different CO2 contents produced by a rotary kiln process through the direct observation of the dissolution behavior of quicklime particles and the change of the CaO content in the slag. The results revealed that quicklime emits the gas in two steps, and the second occurrence of gas formation effectively enhances the quicklime dissolution. The weight of the CaCO 3 core differed among particles from the same grade of quicklime, and the corresponding dissolution rates were different as well. The dissolution rates of quicklime during the second foaming, however, were 5-10 times higher than without foaming and were similar regardless of the CO2 content in a quicklime particle.

This paper presents the prediction of remaining service life of the land concrete as distinguished from the marine concrete. This study assumes that the land concrete is deteriorated by following three cases: carbonation, using sea sand and using deicing salts. In case of carbonation deterioration, statistical analysis and the depth of carbonation front are considered. This depth is assessed about 3.6-8.3 mm and can give more exact prediction than just carbonation depth by phenolphthalein. In case of using sea sand, various specimens considering chloride contents, carbonation accelerating, cover depth, relative humidity and water cement ratio are measured by linear polarization resistance method and half-cell potential method during the 1 year. And measurements of the real steel loss give the conversion ratio of polarization resistance and corrosion rate; consequently, their results make the prediction equation of rust growth during any specified period. In case of using deicing salts, surface chloride contents that change with time are focused. The proposed methods are considered to be useful for prediction of remaining service life of the land concrete by steel corrosion.

The traditional manufacturing process of 1,3-dioxolane requires high investment and energy consumption. A reactive distillation with pressure-swing distillation process is proposed as an attractive candidate based on the process simulation results in this work. To simulate the reactive distillation process, the kinetics experiments of formaldehyde aldolization with ethylene glycol were performed over NKC-9 cationic-exchange resin catalyst at 353-368 K. Byproducts were observed, and the batch distillation experiment were carried out to determine the boiling point temperatures ranking. A calculation strategy of aqueous and ethanediolic formaldehyde solutions was developed to solve the vapor-liquid equilibrium. The sensitivity analysis result shows that the yield of 1,3-dioxolane could be improved to 0.995 in the reactive distillation column, and high-purity 1,3-dioxolane (99.9 wt %) can be obtained in the following pressure-swing distillation process. The research achievements provides a new 1,3-dioxolane production process, which has an advantage in equipment integration.

The current work describes the investigation of film and gel samples, which combine poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and gelatin containing thymolphthalein dye (TP). Under the effect of gamma radiation, two different media prepared as a label film and gel dosimeter its color changed from blue to colorless. Results demonstrated that the new detector systems for application in the low and high dose ranges were from 1 to 6.5 kGy in case of film and from 0.5 to 100 Gy as gel. The response of these dosimeters shows excellent post-irradiation stability at different storage time. These dosimeters are independent of the relative humidity at the time of irradiation in the range of relative humidity from 0 to 60%. Uncertainty of this radiation dosimeter was calculated as well as a comparison between two radiation dosimetry systems and suggest their possible application for both low and high dose dosimetry applications in medicine and industry.
