Also, mast cell mediators inhibit the expression of mRNA for those proteins and inhibit the formation and maturation of calcium nodules and consequently inhibit mineralization. Therefore, mast cell mediators can modulate osteogenesis and are potential therapeutic targets for treatments of bone disorders.

Quaternary-ammonium-salt-type amphiphilic gemini compounds (Cm-2-Cn X, where m and n represent the alkyl chain lengths; m = 4, 6, 8, 10; n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10; m ? n; and X indicates the counterion BF4, PF6, OTf, FSA, or NTf2) were synthesized by the quaternization of N,N,N?,N?-tetramethylethylenediamine and n-alkyl bromide and a subsequent ion-exchange reaction with five different counterions. For comparison, the corresponding monomeric compounds (Cn X, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) were also synthesized. The melting points of the compounds were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry, and those with melting points lower than 100 C were treated as ionic liquids during the subsequent measurements. The amphiphilic gemini compounds exhibited the lowest melting points (44-49 C) when bulky NTf2 – was the counterion and the degree of dissymmetry between the two alkyl chains was 0.4 < n/m < 0.75. However, their melting points were not similar to those of the monomeric compounds with NTf2 - and n = 4-10 (<29 C). The gemini ionic liquids exhibited significantly lower conductivities and higher viscosities than those of the corresponding monomeric ionic liquids. This is because of the decrease in the mobility of the cation molecules caused by the gemini structure, in which the two monomeric compounds are connected by a spacer. The gemini ionic liquids also showed higher densities than those of the corresponding monomeric ionic liquids, owing to the dimer of the gemini structure. Further, the gemini ionic liquids were adsorbed readily at the air/water interface and oriented themselves but did not show the critical micelle concentration for the concentration range over which they could be dissolved in water. The amphiphilic monomeric and gemini ionic liquids also tended to form ion pairs in aqueous solutions, as the length of their alkyl chain was relatively short. The use of detergents with enzymatic activity is very popular if we consider their real economic advantages – reducing energy and water consumption but also reducing the environmental impact by using more biodegradable components related to organic and inorganic components. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the impact of environmental factors such as the variability of water hardness in the public water supply network and the temperature applied to the amylolytic, lipolytic and proteolytic enzyme activity of 6 detergents available on the market. The determinations were performed by modified methods from the European Pharmacopoeia 8th Edition in determination the enzymatic activity of the pancreas powder. The determinations show a significant influence of increased water hardness on lipase and protease activity in detergent (p <0.01 *) between extreme hardness values, while amylolytic activity does not vary significantly with increasing water hardness. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro osteogenic potential of osteoblasts from neural crest-derived frontal bone (OB-NC) and mesoderm-derived parietal bone (OB-MS) and the bone formation induced by them when injected into calvarial defects. Materials and methods: Calvarial bones were collected from newborn Wistar rats (3-day old) and characterized as frontal and parietal prior to OB-NC and OB-MS harvesting. The cells were cultured, and several parameters of osteoblast differentiation were evaluated. These cells, or PBS without cells (control), were locally injected into 5-mm rat calvarial defects (5 × 106 cells/defect) and after 4 weeks bone formation was evaluated by morphometric and histological analyses. Results: The characterization of frontal and parietal bones assured the different embryonic origin of both cell populations, OB-NC and OB-MS. The OB-NC presented higher proliferation while the OB-MS presented higher alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, extracellular matrix mineralization and gene expression of runt-related transcription factor 2, Alp, bone sialoprotein and osteocalcin revealing their high osteogenic potential. muCT analysis indicated that there was higher amount of bone formation in defects injected with both OB-NC and OB-MS compared to the control. Moreover, the bone tissue formed by both cells displayed the same histological characteristics. Conclusions: Despite the distinct in vitro osteogenic potential, OB-NC and OB-MS induced similar bone repair in a rat calvarial defect model. Thus, osteoblasts, irrespective of their in vitro osteogenic potential linked to embryonic origins, seem to be suitable for cell-based therapies aiming to repair bone defects.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of a realkalisation treatment using sacrificial anodes applied to reinforced concrete degraded by carbonation. Analytical determinations (acid/base indicators, quantitative pH, alkaline profiles, SEM and micro-Raman) together with electrochemical characterizations (rest potential, impedance, linear polarisation resistance and corrosion current densities) were performed on artificially carbonated slabs, before and after treatment (mainly 15 days, 11 weeks, 6 and 12 months). The treatment efficiency was demonstrated by an increase of pH and by an alkaline ion penetration in the concrete cover. Rest potential and corrosion current densities indicated a slight decrease of the rebar corrosion activity. Complementary Raman spectroscopy showed a change in the oxide species and SEM observations indicated that the cement matrix remained almost unchanged.

An optical system for the measurement of pH value of foods during its high-pressure treatment was developed. The principle is an absorption measurement using indicator dyes. An indicator mix of 16 different pH-sensitive substances is used to cover the pH range of food. To manage the difficult spectra, a multivariate approach is used. The calibration of the system is performed by taking five different buffer solutions with known pressure behavior (TRIS, CAPS, citric, phosphoric, and acetic acid buffers). The corresponding spectra of the indicator mix are measured and fed to a multivariate data model together with calculated pH values. Some chemometric models have been tested to estimate the pH value based upon the spectra of the indicator mix. The calibration device covers a pH range from 2 to 8 at ambient pressure. After calibration, the system is able to determine the pH value at pressures of up to 450 MPa with an accuracy of 0.24 pH units using eight different test media.

Herein, novel dicationic surfactants bearing morpholinium moieties in polar group, 14-s-14 Mor (s = 4, 6, 8, 10) are synthesized, and their aggregation behavior is studied and compared with reference surfactants, single-head morpholinium surfactant Mor-14, typical gemini with ammonium head group and dicationic surfactants with heterocyclic polar fragment. Geminis studied are found to exhibit superior solubilization capacity toward a pH indicator thymolphthalein and an inflammatory drug indomethacin, exceeding that of reference amphiphiles. The solubility of the probes is contributed by multifactor mechanism involving the solubilization in nonpolar core of micelles and periphery electrostatic interaction between micellar surface charge and ionic moieties of the drug. Mutual influence of the components occurs on their properties, including pKa shift of ionogenic groups of a guest molecule and decrease in critical micelle concentration of geminis.

In recent years, oil and grease has been identified as an emerging pollutant of concern (EPC) in wastewater stream as it can disturb the ecology and wastewater treatment process efficiency. The highest contributor to oily wastewater among domestic wastewater is from kitchen greywater. One of the alternatives to address this problem is the application of enzyme. The production of enzyme by using organic waste has gained significant attention in the recent years due to sustainable demand from it. In this study, pectinolytic enzyme was produced through simplified fermentation from discarded citrus peels that possess high lipase content. Three batches of treatment which consist of the control sample (solely wastewater), 25% (v/v) citrus enzyme + wastewater and 50% (v/v) citrus enzyme + wastewater was incubated in an incubator shaker for 10 days at 30 C and 150 rpm. The wastewater analysis was performed at a regular interval of 48 h. The parameters monitored were pH, BOD5 and oil and grease. Laboratory work has demonstrated that 25% (v/v) pectinolytic enzyme was able to remove BOD5 and oil and grease about 10% better than 50% (v/v) pectinolytic enzyme. The percentage of removal achieved by 25% (v/v) pectinolytic enzyme was 39.83 ± 9.50 mg/L and 64.21 ± 1.12 mg/L, respectively. However, it was observed that enzyme was less effective in removing BOD5 as the solution contains organic matter that increases the total organic matter in the wastewater mixture.
