Kinetics of thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) of poly(diphenylenephthalide) (PDPh) films has been studied using mathematical modelling and DFT approximation. TSL of PDPh-film was considered to be arising from irradiative deactivation of diphenylene (DP) fragment of polymer chain in excited state formed upon recombination of the spatial separated ion-radical pairs generated by photoexcitation. Two parallel monomolecular transformations leading to excited DP have been revealed: the first path is characterized by the activation parameters of the kinetic rate constant k1 which equal to Al ti 105 sec 1 and Eat ti 70 kJ mol(-1). This path may be interpreted in terms of mechanical relaxation theory by segmental polymer mobility as electron transfer (ET) from phthalide (Ph) anion-to DP cation-radical. The second channel is supposed to be consist of two consecutive ET from triarylmethyl anion-radical to phthalide neutral (A2 ti 1 sec 1, Ea2 ti 20 kJ mol(-1)), and then to DP cation-radical (A3 N 104 sec 1, E,3 N 40 kJ mol(-1)) of the polymer chain indicating y- and fl-relaxation, respectively. The revealed mechanistic steps and electron retention efficiency estimated in B97-2/6-311 + G(d,p) approximation for the most probable anion-radicals may point out the key role of domino quantum tunneling in transfer and recombination of charges in PDPh films.

Plasma catalysis has been utilized in many environmental applications for removal of various hydrocarbons including tars. The aim of this work was to study the tars removal process by atmospheric pressure DBD non-thermal plasma generated in combination with packing materials of various composition and catalytic activity (TiO2, Pt/gamma Al2O3, BaTiO3, gamma Al2O3, ZrO2, glass beads), dielectric constant (5-4000), shape (spherical and cylindrical pellets and beads), size (3-5 mm in diameter, 3-8 mm in length), and specific surface area (37-150 m(2)/g). Naphthalene was chosen as a model tar compound. The experiments were performed at a temperature of 100 degrees C and a naphthalene initial concentration of approx. 3000 ppm, i.e., under conditions that are usually less favorable to achieve high removal efficiencies. For a given specific input energy of 320 J/L, naphthalene removal efficiency followed a sequence: TiO2 > Pt/gamma Al2O3 > ZrO2 > gamma Al2O3 > glass beads > BaTiO3 > plasma only. The efficiency increased with the increasing specific surface area of a given packing material, while its shape and size were also found to be important. By-products of naphthalene decomposition were analyzed by means of FTIR spectrometry and surface of packing materials by SEM analysis.

The isobenzofuran-1(3H)-ones (phthalides) exhibit various biological activities, including antioxidant activity on reactive oxygen species (ROS). An excess of ROS that cannot be naturally contained by cellular enzymatic systems is called redox imbalance, which damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, thereby possibly triggering neuronal death in several neurodegenerative diseases. Considering our ongoing efforts to find useful compounds to control redox imbalance, herein we evaluated the antioxidant activity of two phtalides (compounds 3 and 4), using primary cultures of hippocampal neurons. Spectrophotometric assays showed that compound 3 significantly reduced (p <= 0.05) ROS levels and lipid peroxidation compared to the control treatment, while compound 4 was unable at any of the tested concentrations. Despite their structural similarity, these compounds behave differently in the intracellular environment, which was reliably corroborated by the determination of oxidation potentials via cyclic voltammetry. It was demonstrated that compound 3 presents a lower oxidation potential. The combination of the mentioned methods allowed us to find a strong correlation between the chemical structure of compounds and their biological effects. Taking together, the results indicate that compound 3 presents desirable characteristics to act as a candidate pharmacological agent for use in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The present study analyses the thermowell system for monitoring temperatures in a fixed bed catalytic reactor for the highly exothermic partial oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride. Particle-resolved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are presented for the cases of randomly-packed spheres inside cylindrical tubes with tube-to-particle diameter ratios (N) of 3.96, 5.96 and 7.99. Results are obtained for each N value for cases with inner thermowell radius to outer tube radius ratios of 0.0 (no thermowell), 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2. Comparisons of radial void fraction and axial velocity profiles, axial pressure drop and axial temperature profiles under reaction conditions are presented. The presence of the thermowell did change the mass and heat transfer and reaction inside and around the particles, especially at the bed center. The configurations of catalyst particles were rearranged, leading to changes in voidage, flow and temperature profile. We report herein the possibility to perform the hydrosilylation of carbonyls using actinide complexes as catalysts. While complexes of the uranyl ion [UO2](2+) have been poorly considered in catalysis, we show the potentialities of the Lewis acid [UO2(OTf)(2)] (1) in the catalytic hydrosilylation of a series of aldehydes. [UO2(OTf)(2)] proved to be a very active catalyst affording distinct reduction products depending on the nature of the reductant. With Et3SiH, a number of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes are reduced into symmetric ethers, while (Pr3SiH)-Pr-i yielded silylated alcohols. Studies of the reaction mechanism led to the isolation of aldehyde/uranyl complexes, [UO2(OTf)(2)(4-Me2N-PhCHO)(3)], [UO2(mu-kappa(2)-OTf)(2)(PhCHO)](n), and [UO2(mu-kappa(2)-OTf(kappa(1)-OTf)(PhCHO)(2)](2), which have been fully characterized by NMR, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The iron storage protein bacterioferritin (BfrB) is central to bacterial iron homeostasis. The mobilization of iron from BfrB, which requires binding by a cognate ferredoxin (Bfd), is essential to the regulation of cytosolic iron levels in P. aeruginosa. This paper describes the structure-guided development of small molecule inhibitors of the BfrB-Bfd protein-protein interaction. The process was initiated by screening a fragment library and followed by obtaining the structure of a fragment hit bound to BfrB. The structural insights were used to develop a series of 4-(benzylamino)- and 4-((3-phenylpropyl)amino)-isoindoline-1,3-dione analogs that selectively bind BfrB at the Bfd binding site. Challenging P. aeruginosa cells with the 4-substituted isoindoline analogs revealed a dose-dependent growth phenotype. Further investigation determined that the analogs elicit a pyoverdin hyperproduction phenotype that is consistent with blockade of the BfrB-Bfd interaction and ensuing irreversible accumulation of iron in BfrB, with concomitant depletion of iron in the cytosol. The irreversible accumulation of iron in BfrB prompted by the 4-substituted isoindoline analogs was confirmed by visualization of BfrB-iron in P. aeruginosa cell lysates separated on native PAGE gels and stained for iron with Ferene S. Challenging P. aeruginosa cultures with a combination of commercial fluoroquinolone and our isoindoline analogs results in significantly lower cell survival relative to treatment with either antibiotic or analog alone. Collectively, these findings furnish proof of concept for the usefulness of small molecule probes designed to dysregulate bacterial iron homeostasis by targeting a protein-protein interaction pivotal for iron storage in the bacterial cell.
