Asymmetric benzoin condensation was performed using recombinant benzaldehyde lyase (BAL) from Pseudomonas fluorescens Biovar I. To enable the conversion of hydrophobic substrates, the enzyme was entrapped in polyvinyl alcohol and suspended in hexane. Compared to the reported application of the biocatalyst in an aqueous phase containing 20% DMSO, the productivity of the resulting gel-stabilised two-phase system was 3-fold better. Facile reduction of aryl halides with a combination of 5% Pd/C, B2(OH)4, and 4-methylmorpholine is reported. Aryl bromides, iodides, and chlorides were efficiently reduced. Aryl dihalides containing two different halogen atoms underwent selective reduction: I over Br and Cl, and Br over Cl. Beyond these, aryl triflates were efficiently reduced. This combination was broadly general, effectuating reductions of benzylic halides and ethers, alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, and azides, as well as for N-Cbz deprotection. A cyano group was unaffected, but a nitro group and a ketone underwent reduction to a low extent. When B2(OD)4 was used for aryl halide reduction, a significant amount of deuteriation occurred. However, H atom incorporation competed and increased in slower reactions. 4-Methylmorpholine was identified as a possible source of H atoms in this, but a combination of only 4-methylmorpholine and Pd/C did not result in reduction. Hydrogen gas has been observed to form with this reagent combination. Experiments aimed at understanding the chemistry led to the proposal of a plausible mechanism and to the identification of N,N-bis(methyl-d3)pyridin-4-amine (DMAP-d6) and B2(OD)4 as an effective combination for full aromatic deuteriation. Hydrazones are important classes of compounds found in many synthetic products. Due to their importance in synthetic chemistry, the present article reports the synthesis of twelve new hydrazone derivatives based on the coupling of 2,5-difluorobenzohydrazide with different benzaldehydes and screened for their antibacterial activities at the concentration 250 mug/mL with reference to the standard antibacterial drug Ampicillin. The screening results revealed that hydrazone derivatives 4d, 4e, 4f and 4h having fluorine substitution showed significant antibacterial activity comparable to that of standard drug Ampicillin.

Various C-aryl and C-alkyl-nitrones were synthesized within 0.5-2 h via condensation of an equimolar amount of aldehydes and N-substituted-hydroxylamines under solvent-free conditions in a ball-mill apparatus. Reactions can be performed without the need of excluding air and moisture and yields the expected products with no need for further purification. The study has been complemented by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and solid-state 13C MAS nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. We have also studied the temperature profile during the reaction. A comparative study with the corresponding solvent-free microwave activated reaction showed the superiority of the ball-milling method; 31 examples are described, including the synthesis of the anti-aging agent C-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) and one of its analogues C-2-pyridyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (2-PyBN).
