Potassium tert-butoxide mediated aerobic hydroxylation of arylboronic acids: an application towards the synthesis of (E)-phenoxy acrylates

The first example of potassium tert-butoxide mediated aerobic hydroxylation of arylboronic acids is described. A variety of arylboronic acids bearing both electron donating and withdrawing substituents successfully participated in the reaction and furnished phenols in good yields. This strategy also provides access to one pot synthesis of (E)-3-phenoxy acrylates from arylboronic acids and propiolates. Reaction pathways involving quantum tunneling of protons are fundamental to chemistry and biology. They are responsible for essential aspects of interstellar synthesis, the degradation and isomerization of compounds, enzymatic activity, and protein dynamics. On-surface conditions have been demonstrated to open alternative routes for organic synthesis, often with intricate transformations not accessible in solution. Here, we investigate a hydroalkoxylation reaction of a molecular species adsorbed on a Ag(111) surface by scanning tunneling microscopy complemented by X-ray electron spectroscopy and density functional theory. The closure of the furan ring proceeds at low temperature (down to 150 K) and without detectable side reactions. We unravel a proton-tunneling-mediated pathway theoretically and confirm experimentally its dominant contribution through the kinetic isotope effect with the deuterated derivative.

A promising protocol using visible light and aryl iodides for constructing valuable building blocks, including benzofuran-, indole-, and benzothiophene-based benzylic gem-diboronates, via radical carbo-cyclization/gem-diborylation of alkynes with a high functional group tolerance is presented. The utility of these gem-diboronates has been demonstrated by a 10 g scale conversion, by versatile transformations, by including the synthesis of approved drug scaffolds and two approved drugs, and even by polymer synthesis. The mechanistic investigation indicates that the merging of the dinuclear gold catalyst (photoexcitation by 315-400 nm UVA light) with Na2CO3 is directly responsible for photosensitization of aryl iodides (photoexcitation by 254 nm UV light) with blue LED light (410-490 nm, lambda(max) = 465 nm) through an energy transfer (EnT) process, followed by homolytic cleavage of the C-I bond in the aryl iodide substrates.

Catalytic Carbonylative Double Cyclization of 2-(3-Hydroxy-1-yn-1-yl)phenols in Ionic Liquids Leading to Furobenzofuranone Derivatives

A catalytic carbonylative double cyclization method for the synthesis of furo[3,4-b]benzofuran-1(3H)-ones is reported. It is based on the reaction between readily available 2-(3-hydroxy-1-yn-1-yl)phenols, CO, and oxygen carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of PdI2 (1 mol %) in conjunction with KI (20 mol %) and 2 equiv of diisopropylethylamine at 80 degrees C for 24 h under 30 atm of a 1:4 mixture of CO-air. Interestingly, the process was not selective when carried out in classical organic non-nucleophilic solvents (such as MeCN or DME), leading to a mixture of the benzofurofuranone derivative and the benzofuran ensuing from simple cycloisomerization, whereas it turned out chemoselective toward the formation of the double cyclization compound in BmimBF(4) as the reaction medium. Moreover, the ionic liquid solvent containing the catalyst could be easily recycled several times without appreciable loss of activity.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry based untargeted volatolomics for smoked seafood classification

With the increase of the demand of low flavouring smoked seafood products, there is a need of methodologies able to distinguish between different seafood treatments, as not all of them are allowed in all markers. Following this objective, in the present work an untargeted volatolomics approach was applied to identify volatile markers that demonstrate that Cold smoked products can be distinguished from Tasteless smoke neither Carbon monoxide treated seafood, which are prohibited in the European Union. The use of dynamic headspace for the volatile extraction followed by thermal desorption in combination with Gas Chromatography (GC) coupled to single quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (MS) has been employed for the determination of volatile composition of smoked fish. Data processing consisted on the use of PARADISe software, applied for GC/MS data treatment, followed by the multivariate analysis with PLS_Toolbox (MATLAB), and finally the creation and validation of statistical classification model. All 107 variables obtained allowed the construction of a model reaching the correct classification of 97% of the blind samples, while a simplified model with only 11 variables correctly classified up to 93% of the blind samples. These 11 compounds were elucidated to develop subsequent target volatolomics approaches, if needed. Ordered according to the importance in the classification model, the elucidated compounds were: 3-methyl-cyclopentanone, ethylbenzene, 2-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one, 2-methyl-benzofuran, furfuryl alcohol, 2-acetylfuran, acetophenone, guaiacol, 1-hydroxy-2-butanone, 4-vinylguaicol and acetoin. The results demonstrated the great potential of untargeted volatolomics for smoked seafood treatments classification.
