Considering the anti-infective potential of compounds containing the dibenzothiepine scaffold, we set out to obtain new compounds bearing this structure. The synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral studies and elemental analysis and screened for their microbiostatic/microbicidal and antibiofilm properties against reference and clinical microbial strains. The new compounds exhibited a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, which was more intensive for the S-oxidized compounds. Some of the compounds also inhibited the ability of the investigated strains to form biofilms on the inert substratum.

Plasma catalysis has been utilized in many environmental applications for removal of various hydrocarbons including tars. The aim of this work was to study the tars removal process by atmospheric pressure DBD non-thermal plasma generated in combination with packing materials of various composition and catalytic activity (TiO2, Pt/gamma Al2O3, BaTiO3, gamma Al2O3, ZrO2, glass beads), dielectric constant (5-4000), shape (spherical and cylindrical pellets and beads), size (3-5 mm in diameter, 3-8 mm in length), and specific surface area (37-150 m(2)/g). Naphthalene was chosen as a model tar compound. The experiments were performed at a temperature of 100 degrees C and a naphthalene initial concentration of approx. 3000 ppm, i.e., under conditions that are usually less favorable to achieve high removal efficiencies. For a given specific input energy of 320 J/L, naphthalene removal efficiency followed a sequence: TiO2 > Pt/gamma Al2O3 > ZrO2 > gamma Al2O3 > glass beads > BaTiO3 > plasma only. The efficiency increased with the increasing specific surface area of a given packing material, while its shape and size were also found to be important. By-products of naphthalene decomposition were analyzed by means of FTIR spectrometry and surface of packing materials by SEM analysis.

We report an efficient, catalyst-free, one-pot synthesis of (E)-N ‘-benzylidene-2-(hydroxymethyl)benzohydrazide derivatives by the one-pot reaction of phthalide, hydrazine hydrate and aldehyde. Advantages of this synthetic approach include mild reaction conditions and environmentally friendly nature, and the ability to provide a wide range of desired compounds in moderate to excellent yields. Chiral alpha-substituted 1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans are key scaffolds in a number of bioactive natural products and synthetic pharmaceuticals. However, catalytic asymmetric approaches have been rarely developed. Here, a redox deracemization technology is adopted to address the catalytic asymmetric synthesis. A broad range of alpha-aryl substituted 1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans are effectively deracemized in high efficiency with excellent ee. alpha-Alkynyl substituted ethers were also compatible with the deracemization technology. In this study, the biological activities and mode of action of 3-butylidene phthalide (3-BPH) were studied. 3-BPH had a superior efficiency against microsclerotia of Macrophomina phaseolina compared to the commercial fungicide tricyclazole. The microsclerotia formation and pigmentation were inhibited at 100 mu g/mL. Moreover, the fungicide exhibited in silico affinity toward trihydroxy naphthalene reductase (3HNR). Both 3-BPH and tricyclazole showed congruence in the orientation and interaction within the 3HNR active site. 3-BPH displayed a strong interaction with SER-164, TYR-178, and TYR-223, with estimated binding energy and inhibition constant of -6.78 kcal mol(-1), and Ki = 12.6 mu M, respectively. Furthermore, it showed in vitro and in silico inhibitory activity against Drosophila melanogaster acetylcholinesterase in a concentration-dependent manner with IC50 = 730 mu g/mL. It also impaired Galleria mellonella phenol oxidase enzyme, which corresponds with the insect’s immune system. Phytotoxicity of 3-BPH was evident against Lemna minor at 1000 mu g/mL; nevertheless, it was nontoxic at the concentrations inhibiting M. phaseolina microsclerotia and dark pigments suggest that it may be safe for use on other plants at low doses. Further assays are wanted to develop 3-BPH as a novel crop protection compound.

We report here the construction of two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Zr-6-Cu/Fe-1 and Zr-6–Cu/Fe-2, by integrating earth-abundant cuprous photosensitizers (Cu-PSs) and Fe catalysts for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation. Site isolation and pore confinement stabilize both Cu-PSs and Fe catalysts, while the proximity between active centers facilitates electron and mass transfer. Upon visible light irradiation and using O-2 as the only oxidant, Zr-6-Cu/Fe-1 and Zr-6-Cu/ Fe-2 efficiently oxidize alcohols and benzylic compounds to afford corresponding carbonyl products with broad substrate scopes, high turnover numbers of up to 500 with a 9.4-fold enhancement over homogeneous analogues, and excellent recyclability in four consecutive runs. Control experiments, spectroscopic evidence, and computational studies revealed the photooxidation mechanism: oxidative quenching of [Cu-PS]* by O-2 affords [Cu-II-PS], which efficiently oxidizes Fe-III-OH to generate a hydroxyl radical for substrate oxidation. This work highlights the potential of MOFs in promoting earth-abundant metal-based photocatalysis.

The Pd-catalyzed three-component coupling polycondensation of diiodoarenes, nonconjugated dienes, and carbonucleophiles afforded poly(arylene alkenylene)s with moderate molecular weight in good yield. The reaction involves Mizoroki-Heck coupling, olefin migration via chain walking, and addition of the carbonucleophile to the resulting pi-allylpalladium species. The polymerization with a slight excess of nucleophile with respect to diiodoarene also proceeded to give the polymer without significant decrease in molecular weight in spite of the nonstoichiometric mixture of the monomers. The Pd-catalyzed three-component coupling polycondensation of diiodoarenes, nonconjugated dienes, and diimide also proceeded. The base used in the reaction is critical for yield and molecular weight of the product. The reaction using NaHCO3 afforded the product with low solubility, which can be explained by the high molecular weight of the polymer and/or the strong interaction of the electron donating dimethoxyphenylene groups and electron accepting diimide groups in the polymer. Ruthenium-pincer complexes bearing CNN- and PNN-pincer ligands with diethyl- or diisopropylamino side groups, which have previously been reported to be active precatalysts for ester hydrogenation, undergo dehydroalkylation on heating in the presence of tricyclohexylphosphine to release ethane or propane, giving five-coordinate ruthenium(0) complexes containing a nascent imine functional group. Ethane or propane is also released under the conditions of catalytic ester hydrogenation, and time-course studies show that this release is concomitant with the onset of catalysis. A new PNN-pincer ruthenium(0)-imine complex is a highly active catalyst for ester hydrogenation at room temperature, giving up to 15 500 turnovers with no added base. This complex was shown to react reversibly at room temperature with two equivalents of hydrogen to give a ruthenium(II)-dihydride complex, where the imine functionality has been hydrogenated to give a protic amine side group. These observations have potentially broad implications for the identities of catalytic intermediates in ester hydrogenation and related transformations.

A dehydrogenative oxidation reaction of primary alcohols to aldehydes catalyzed by a simple Pd/Xantphos catalytic system was developed under an argon or nitrogen atmosphere without oxidizing agents or hydrogen acceptors. The reaction product could be easily changed: under aerobic conditions, esters were obtained in aprotic solvents, whereas the corresponding carboxylic acids were produced in aqueous media. These oxidizing processes were applicable to the efficient synthesis of useful nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds such as indole, quinazoline, and benzimidazole via intramolecular versions of this reaction from amino alcohols.
