Based on the mechanistic experimentation and reported prior studies, a possible mechanism for the benzylic oxidative lactonization reaction was proposed with the hypothetic photoactive ternary complex formed between the 2-alkylbenzoic acid substrate, magnesium ion, and bromate anion.
