To the isolated Ru/salen/pyridine (4 mg, 0.005 mmol) catalyst was charged 4-vinyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (0.37 g, 2.53 mmol) in 4.44 mL of toluene. To the stirred solution was slowly added a solution of EDA (0.32 g, 2.80 mmol) in 1.0 mL of toluene over 30 minutes. After 2.5 hours, an aliquot was removed, and the sample was analyzed by in-process HPLC. The desired cyclopropane ethyl ester was not formed, and only VBF was detected.
