4-hydroxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione (0.773 g, 4.71 mmol, 1 eq) and 3-aminopiperidine-2,6-dione hydrochloride (0.775 g, 4.71 mmol, 1 eq) were dissolved in pyridine (19 mL) and heated to 110 C. for 16 hours. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and purified by column chromatography (ISCO, 12 g silica column, 0-10% MeOH/DCM, 25 minute gradient) to give an off white solid (1.14 g, 4.16 mmol, 88%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) delta 11.19 (s, 1H), 11.07 (s, 1H), 7.65 (dd, J=8.3, 7.3 Hz, 1H), 7.31 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 1H), 7.24 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 5.07 (dd, J=12.8, 5.4 Hz, 1H), 2.88 (ddd, J=17.7, 14.2, 5.4 Hz, 1H), 2.63-2.50 (m, 2H), 2.11-1.95 (m, 1H).
