Cis–I (R = H, R1 = NO2) with KOH in refluxing MeOH (4 h) gave cis– and trans-2-O2NC6H4CH:C(OMe)CH2CH(OMe)2 which on sequential hydrolysis (aqueous MeOH, ambient temperature, yield 55%) and reduction with Al-Hg (refluxing aqueous EtOH, yield 75%) gave indole II.
